Title: Promoting Glest
Post by: John.d.h on 2 March 2010, 20:48:00
I've noticed a few posts around the board lately that relate to the idea of getting more people interested in playing Glest.  This is something we really need to happen, because more people means more development, so this thread is meant as a central collection of ideas to get more people interested in Glest.
We need more ideas, so post them here and I'll add them to the list.  Thanks.

I've already submitted something about Glest to slashdot just today. :)
I talked a bit about the development forks, and that Official Original Glest is no longer under development.

Make sure you talk about the forums! ;)

I think the best site would be ModDB, because anybody who's on the site is already looking for games.  Glest is already on the site, but only a couple mods are listed.

I've already submitted something about Glest to slashdot just today. :)

That's one of the things that prompted me to post this topic, actually, along with Little Helper's wallpapers and Glest Network's recruitment topic.  I figured we could compile everything together for better discussion.

  • Slashdot
Wassat?
  • Digg
Heard of, but no clue what it is or how to use it.
  • Reddit
See Slashdot reply.
  • ModDB (Glest is already on ModDB, but it would help if more people would post their mods/tilesets/maps, etc., so that people can see how much content we're making!)
Good idea, but everyone's so lazy... Maybe one or two people could do it, since I think you need an account anyway. (I think I made one long ago, but don't remember it's username/password).
  • Facebook (there's already a Glest fan page)
Yup, joined that a while ago. Seems a bit old and doesn't really promote that well though, since you gotta know what to look for...

Slashdot is like a news site...I think people submit their recommended "news"...not sure...
Reddit is the kinda the same thing

That's what I was thinking. Although it would be better if we could be less lazy and upload our own mods/stuff ourselves... note me I guess...didn't "contribute":... yet

Title: Re: Promoting Glest
Post by: Omega on 3 March 2010, 04:07:15
I'm actually taking a look at slashdot. It might be an interesting site...

Here's my ideas for 'spreading the word':
-Game Developement/Programming forums, they always have help wanted and announcing sections, where you can promoted glest and maybe get some coders too!
-Fan Games Boards - Ditto!
-Download.com - we have this, but it's badly ranked. Is there anyway to help this?
-Computer Sites that have forums, you may be able to get a few people from
-Every list of freeware games possible
-Improve the wikipedia (the real wikipedia, NOT the glest wiki) article for Glest, to make it more accurate, uptodate, and interesting.
Title: Re: Promoting Glest

Honestly, I've never really been on Digg, but basically you can submit an article or link and people can dig it (vote up) or bury it (vote down).  Thus, the articles that have the best rating getting the most press while ones with the worst rating kinda fall by the wayside.  Reddit and Slashdot are similar, I think.

@ Ultifd: Maybe you could spice up the video section on ModDB.  It's currently very lacking.
http://www.moddb.com/games/glest/videos/add (http://www.moddb.com/games/glest/videos/add)

-Game Developement/Programming forums, they always have help wanted and announcing sections, where you can promoted glest and maybe get some coders too!
-Fan Games Boards - Ditto!
Specifics would help.

If you mean the user rating, you can improve it by giving it five stars.  You can also write a review saying how it's a good game with an awesome forum community.  If there's an editor rating, there ain't jack you can do about that. :P

Agreed.  Volunteers? :)

Yeah...I think a few users recently did that and they got banned for some reason...  ::)  :P

How? By recommending? Most of the sites, the popular ones at least, have Glest already... Although a large number of them is out-dated...by the version they reviewed...

Slashdot works on user and editor submissions (interesting news, book/game reviews, interviews,) most of which are linked to something offsite. It has enough users to kill webservers and sites that aren't prepared to handle a large influx of users suddenly. People comment extensively on the submissions, both while pending and when actively posted. Submissions don't get ranked, just posted or not depending on their expected value to the users. The do get categorized cased on the content, and users see categories they select as of interest to them, plus any that are consudered of general interest. As new things post, old ones get pushed down and eventually (by age, I think) get removed and archived.
I've been a daily slashdot reader/user for many years myself.

On another note, I found Glest via a list of freeware games somewhere online. Finding lists like these and adding Glest is always good. I THINK that I found Glest at freegamedev.net (?).

Okay, i made some information about glest, maybe we can put in a youtube video? what do you say ultifd?

Hello guys!

I will introduce you to a little known game, it is called glest!

Remember that glest is free!
Yes it is free, and now you probably think, gaaah! another failure project that is trying to pretend to be professional!

no people!

GLEST is a game, made so that it can be modded to work with almost any operating system! (i think!)
Also, i forgot to mention the most important thing of it all...

Excited?

No matter the answer to that...

Glest is a GAME ENGINE used to make modifications to the game glest, and with the, free!!, engine you can make your
own factions species races!

Do not forget to visit the forums, a safe, and secure forum, maintained by thrustable moderators (Titi seems to be
the most active though) wich will learn you how to use glest, install it, even how to model your 3d-models for your faction!
Currently there are are very many mods in development, but extremely many more has been created!

i say to all you out there, glest has come to stay, and if we keep up our work with it, one day it may become
a succesfull RTS

Glest.Org

Not got enough information?

Well okay, let me tell you about the forums.

The forums are the place were people meet other developers, freinds, and they make somewhat of tournaments, yes,
GLEST is capable of playing MULTI-Player, and a server program is started by the user: Glest Network

Glest network is going to make a server program allowing all players of this game to play online with eachother!

And we have more linux computers ( i think) than windows, so your operating system shouldn`t be a problem, i myself is running
Vista and Win7 on to different computers, works very well, and of course, it is possible to play from a Linux based
OS to a Windows based OS!

Now a little more information about some of our forum members, Little Helper, our design-artist for glest, is putting a lot of
effort into making high quality wallpapers and all of the artstuff!

Archmage is also (i belive our greatest posters with about 3000 posts) posting news at SlashDot, as you can see, this
Game is under a huge development, and new mods are coming almsot at the speed of light!

Got it now?

I THINK that I found Glest at freegamedev.net (?).
Some stuff, but more about MegaGlest...and the people over there still remember the bad aspects of Glest so...  ::)
