Title: Linux Maintainer
Post by: Speedator on 14 April 2006, 16:51:51
I think it is important to get a Linux-maintainer for the Glest-project.
Martino haven't good the interest in it and not the knowledge.
Matthias Braun has done a great job porting it, but he doesn't seem to focus on this anymore. I don't want to blame both for it, they only have  other interests.

I'd like to do this job, but I haven't got the knowledge, too.
So what do you think. Do you think it is important to get a maintainer?
To coordinate the code-package(unix-format etc.), organising the different distribution-build etc.

Hi speedator,

of course all the linux fans would appreciate a maintainer - for more than one reason, for example

I've the same problem as many others here: not being expert enough <sigh>

But maybe, we get around, just working together  :)

errrr....so i'am not exactly a volounteer to maintain a linux port but a point is i'am just near the finish of general cleanup sources for the linux. that includes: rearange source tree to look as linux compatible, throw out the jam for the lovely make install, patch the code to be compatible with new gcc, make an patch that makes it FHS compatible.

That can be done just tonight if i'll find the reason why that won't compile with gcc 4.1.0 on my system, i guess that is just my system problem.

so c.u.l.8.r

Hmm I hope your efforts are not to clear things for Linux only, since the game is supposed to be multiplatform, if they can't be used without almost no effort in other systems then I guess that in a posible next version your changes won't make it to the main tree.

And here is the thread for contributions and storage :p

It's a sticky in the development subforum.

Errr....i didn't say that i wanna merge it with source tree. That what i done is tarball cleaned up and aimed exactly to linux users and linux distro developers. I did it cos source archive on the main page is funny and at the same time can leave annoyed everyone who's using system other than M$ Trapdoor.

First of all,
i think that the Linux port is very important.
I use only Linux for my Work and Gaming, therefore it is my interesting that this game will be developed for Linux.
Please do not stop developing this wonderful Game.

I am not a Developer but i am knowing a little bit from Linux.
Maybe somebody can do an autopackage Format of this Game, this would be easier for developing. The autopackage Format is usable for many Linux Operating Systems.

Look for,

I00natyk.  Can you please send me the changes to the source code?

theshadowgate-^-gmail.com

no, i can send you full tarball then you'll be know why.

just i can't make that changes on general source tree. when i'll catch a while i'll make patch whitch will not clash with main tree cause i see there is at least one user who want.

Well about maintaining the linux port: I do have the time to do the maintainenance work for glest (fixing installation, gcc compilation issues, etc.) It's just that I don't have the time to scan through the forums here to see what problems users actually have. It would be best if some people could sum up the issues and send e-mails to me.

(For example I was just surpised to read at a news site that 2.0.1 was released... the buildfiles in there had indeed some cr/lf and other small problems, however so far I didn't receive a single mail about that)
