Post by: firedeathbot on 21 May 2007, 12:50:17
Do we need more modderators because we seem to be getting some spam that just sits around a few days?

Do you also delete the user accounts that are used to post spam? If you take a look at the member list (http://www.glest.org/glest_board/memberlist.php) (reverse the sort order to see the newest accounts on top), there are lots of accounts with zero posts. If you delete a spam message, it might be a good idea to delete the spammer's user account as well (if it has only been used for spam), because that account probably will never be used again anyway.

edit:
Such a user account often has a link in its profile to some spammer's website. By not removing the account you help the spammer by increasing its Google page rank.

[maybe, topics of spam. removing a whole forum because of one spam post, would be interesting  ;) - @kukac@]

Well, all SPAM is comming to the General forum, but I don't think renaming it would help (I had the same problem on a own forum and even changing that forum's ID didn't help :S).

because of the spam posts (topics) usually goes to the first forum that allows to start a new topic. in our board, its the general discussion. i also remember, when we had spam in the development forum too.

i guess you misunderstood me

I didn't mean that we should just delete the forums and start a new one everytime someone posted spam!
i meant that maybe we need more moderators to get rid of spam topics because i hate opening a topic only to fing its a bunch of junk! [k - @kukac@]

yes, but forum administrator can delete accounts. thats martino, right? i put my fingers into creating phpbb forums, so i explored that functions. administrator is something like owner of forum.

@kukac@: I've deleted the post "Let's get acquainted My name is Tomas!" since it's certainly SPAM, I've just seen an identical post on another board where I'm moderator xDD.

then check the "Hello people" topic, that was a spam post too. also, i wanted to give the others a feedback, that we are checking the spam post, not just sleeping while the bots are began their evil mission against the Glest Board!

i will tell you, that there is 1451 accounts without post, and we have 650 accounts with at least 1 post. so why would the spam bots increase the pagerank?

AGAIN! this is too much. someone please contact tucho to delete all accounts that posted a spam ever. he is administrator of this board and can delete accounts. there is no mail in his profile. (http://http://www.glest.org/glest_board/profile.php?mode=viewprofile&u=74)

What about getting everyone to click a link in their email then after a month or something whoever hasn't will be deleted? (I'm not sure if it's possible though)

well, personally i thought, that who hasnt got at least 1 post after registering a week (so we have to delete the spam within 1 week) the account would be deleted. also, for real users, there should be an activity topic.

i think he is currently modelling something else ;) and you cant command the administrator(s) to delete this, and this account.

EDIT: also, check the memberlist in descending mode. Tucho will not delete all of those accounts.

I still think a nice solution would be to require that the first message of a new account is reviewed by a moderator before it appears on the forum. If a spammer then wants to get his message on the forum, he would need to post an on-topic message first; and I don't see a spam bot doing that.
Title: topic
Post by: @kukac@ on 9 July 2007, 11:14:35
we were talking about in different solution in at least 20 topics (mostly in spam topics, so they got deleted), but nothing has changed.

The solution is damn easier. Just put a "I am a human" checkbox on the signup page and this will stop the bots. The CAPTCHA doesn't work because probably it's a well known phpBB mod that the bots already know, but if a site has a own solution they won't know how to solve it.

Post by: andyglest on 9 July 2007, 14:14:56
i think there is no such solution. i think all that spams were added manually. registered manually, and then pasted pre-written spam into topic, and then clicked Submit.

Uh, I see quite a few spam topics in development, and one in general with the name, black jack online.  Theres some quite disturbing ! ones in development. I think they've been sitting around for quite a while. Just saying.

And I totally agree that spammers should get their accounts deleted, or even their ip addresses banned if they seriously offend. And moderators should be able to "get promoted" to be able to delete accounts after proving themselves. Maybe that would work.

They've been there less then 24 hours and it probably won't be there too much longer. The moderators do a good job of removing spam. :)
