We are receiving lots of visits these days, and they don't come from internet referrers, can you please tell us where did you hear about glest (If it wasn't on the internet)?
-
Well, as you know, I am a huge fan of RTS games. So I went to my favorite freeware site www.gamehippo.com (http://www.gamehippo.com) and looked at the RTS section. I somehow found my way over to this site and I have been hooked ever since.
I just realized you said "If it wasn't on the internet"
-
I procrastinating continuing my OpenGL 1.4-rendered First Person Shooter (well, the world editor for it, at least), while I was browsing the OpenGL news at opengl.org. I came accross an item that was somthing like "OpenGL game Glest adds 3D texures...."

i found glest here:

PS: i think too, this game is more like warcraft than AOE but i like AOE more. i'll buy AOE 3 for sure as it comes out in germany.

Hello Everyone,
I Was looking for a 3d engine for the new version of magiknights (current one is magiknights 2d rpg) and just kinda surfed around and kinda fell here. Downloading the game it is perfect for what i am looking for. I envisioned magiknights '3d' like this, i also play a game called soul blighter and wanted a similar view.

As @kukac@ I found the 0.7.1 version in the Chip magazine.
And not just you, we all are waiting for the multiplayer.
-
I learned about Glest at the Happy Penguin site. I'm glad that open source games start to become serious alternatives to commercial titles. Great job, guys. :)

In the request forum of http://portableapps.com (http://portableapps.com)
Since then after playing Glest and considering how good it would be in PortableApps Format I have requested it here :p
-
Glest is already portable (just copy the files to your device and run) but to be a proper PortableApps program the installer would need to be setup (step 4). Also reducing the size if it's possible. (step 5)
http://portableapps.com/development (http://portableapps.com/development)
If you want to continue discussion you should create a new topic in General unless someone thinks it should go elsewhere.

same as above, found it in synaptic (ubuntu package manager), and thought it was so good that I came to the website.
-
well... I'm not sure what pulled me to the site...
I had just installed Ubuntu on my laptop, then I put the Enlightenment (e17) desktop on it.
it was too cool for school. but it needed some games. so I searched.
I have always loved RTS, such as: Warcraft, Age of Empires, Battle Realms, C&C Generals, Star Wars - Galactic BattleGrounds, and Empire at War.
so I browsed the web for open source RTS games.
I found Glest. at first I thought it was ...eh... but the more I played the more I loved it.
So I guess I really found out about Glest on the Wikipedia directory of Open Source games.
-
friends at school
-
what brought me here is my burning desire to make maps, scenarios, and models. :P
How did I find this game...a wrong name put into search on google. :D
-
Thinking one night, I realized I never shared how I found Glest. It's been too long. I can't remember! I think I was looking for free games on Wikipedia or something and there was a picture...
Hmm, maybe there never was a picture, as I can't find anything like that. I think it was from the 'list of open source games'. I was just randomly picking games that sound gooded (by genre) and seeing if I should download. Glad I did!
-
I found it browsing the packages in my distribution (gentoo).
-
I found Glest while researching on finding an engine that I could use to create a 3D RTS. And this was the best one to show up, so yeah. That's how I found Glest (which for some reason I keep thinking it's Glent ???)
-
Looking for a freeware RTS on Wikipedia to play across LAN with my housemate. Still not had a multiplayer yet but enjoying the game and community.

-
Found it looking for a heroes 3 torrent ?!!?
-
I found this game while googeling for "free RTS".
I am new to Glest and I have just signed in to this forum. I really would like to thank all the people who have created this great free game. It is better than all the free RTS games I have ever played. It is user friendly and the graphics are just right.
I suggest Starting a Topic guiding me and other new Glest users with Installation of the game and especially addons installation (ex. Mods, tiles etc..).
Keep up the good work.
Sincere regards,
I. Elia

Well, I make maps in wc3, mainly altered melee maps, and they are all converts from game. Not that convert, my I just stole the techtree from rts games and make it in wc3 (I already made wc1, wc2, and sc2 (still in alpha phase)).
I came across this game called Armies of Exigo, another RTS, and I searched for free cracked downloads, and the google give me a link on this in wikipedia, and it's.....FREE :D.

I found it while skimming through the mass of free-ware games on the web

hi my name is bruce, this is my first post :)
i find through free-ware games
-
I was looking for a rts engine, so I put something like "free rts game engine" on google (I don't remember exactly what I typed) and found this.
-
Welcome to the forums, lazyanttu, and thanks for reporting. Sp which game did you come across first (Glest, MegaGlest, or GAE), and where did you go from there?
-
which game did you come across first (Glest, MegaGlest, or GAE), and where did you go from there?
I couldn't get links to MegaGlest or GAE at all by searching combinations of such terms, only Glest (note that you'd have to use a "clean" PC, as most search engines track you to give you searches better based on what you've visited before; so a huge Glest player who has googled lots of Glest related stuff is more likely to see Glest higher in the results than someone who has not).
-
For what it's worth, MegaGlest is currently on position #5 when you search for 'Glest' on Google without country resolution, without geo localisation (which was lately introduced as yet another automatism), with Google Instant (default when Javascript is on), with duplicate filtering (default) and with moderate safe search setting (default).
To reproduce, start Firefox/Iceweasel or Chrome/Chromium in private browsing / incognito mode (restart the web browser if it's already running in this mode), visit http://google.com/ncr (http://google.com/ncr) then http://google.com/search?query=glest (http://google.com/search?query=glest)

I tried that, and very interesting. Still, let's be honest here, nobody searching for a new game will search for "glest". Instead, they'll be searching things like "free", "game", "rts", etc. After all, they haven't found Glest yet; the goal is to grab a player looking generically for games, as rather few will know exactly what they're looking for (in which case, most of them likely will go to the first link).
-
While a lot of people still do look for Glest, for example because they have it available in their Linux distribution, or because they read about it on another website. you're probably right about way more people looking for generic terms. And we (MegaGlest (http://megaglest.org)) still have a long way to go there. Here's some positions for such searches:
Search term:
free real-time strategy
Position 6 for Glest, 37 for MegaGlest.
free real-time strategy game
Position 11 for Glest, 59 for MegaGlest.
free "real-time strategy"
Position 6 for Glest, 27 for MegaGlest.
free "real-time strategy" game
Position 8 for Glest, 38 for MegaGlest.
free RTS game
Position 16 for Glest, MegaGlest doesn't show up.
free RTS
Position 14 for Glest, MegaGlest doesn't show up.
For what it's worth, lately (August), MegaGlest's most common search terms were:
1 1225 67.64% megaglest
2 170 9.39% mega glest
3 31 1.71% glest
-
Being a new GAE & MG user (about 4 days now I think, but I've lost track due to game time!) I just Googled "freeware strategy game" and spent hours hunting through websites for something decent and playable. I ended up at Sourceforge and the Glest Wiki, then discovered the two main forks and tried both.

My Google search was "Open source games". I was looking for games to translate for the Gaelic speaking community, since we're still scarece of computer games in our language. I have a German language operating system and that's what Google latches onto insted of my browser locale, hence the link to German language content from an English language search :|
Their download is for Glest 3.2.2 and I did a bit of playing and translated it. Then I found that the technology trees couldn't be translated and came here looking for info. So now I've started work on all three branches :)
-
I saw it in ualinux.ru 's repository.
