Hi, I have played Glest, I do like it, but still needs a lot of work.

I am a C#/C++ programmer. I have more experince with C++ than I do in C#. Although I never made my own projects in C++, I am doing a text based Strategy/RPG as a windows application with C#. Then I'll be working on my own 2D RTS game with C#. All future 3D projects of mine will be done in C++. Although, C# 3.0 will be able to code natively, so I may just stick with C# as it'll be as fast as C++.

Not sure.

I also have experince in writing stories & game design.

I am 15 years old, January 2nd I'll be 16. I hope to go to M.I.T for my bachelor's in computer science then DigiPen for my masters.

Wish you luck on this project! I'll be around a while.

It's always good to have more programmers.  :D

I'm hoping to start a Bachelor of Games and Interactive Entertainment Degree with software major next year which should help.

Wow, a lot of programmers consist out of the U.S. It's amazing. They all learn it in a collage out of this country, but once they have the degrees they need, they come to the U.S., right now M.I.T & DigiPen are the best collages for programming(M.I.T) & Game Development(DigiPen). Just one collage offers master in C.S. & the other offers Bachelor's in C.S.

Are the collages better out of the U.S.??

Hello!

I haven't been here for a long time - precisely 6 months. My interest for Glest fall down after my vacation. Few days ago I opened Glest and played it for few minutes. Then I decided to continue developing for it. Sorry I'm late half year. :D

If you didn't see my other post;

You can call me Ishmaru and I am a junior year student at NYIT studying CG. My specialty is on 3Dsmax, and photoshop. I know a little bit about C but only a little.

I really enjoy the Glest Engine and are currently working on a total conversion called "Chasm". It is a Fantasy Industreal world with anime styled characters. Not even close to be ready to release but I can show some screens soon.

Hello =)
I forgot to say hi before, so here it is.
I played Glest before, maybe two versions ago... I'm installing it again to see what's new - maybe I can find some scenarios I made some time ago, rebuff them to fit 3.2 and build a saga...
I am a programmer, but I get enough coding at work as it is, plus the toying I do on my websites with PHP and so on... I guess I'll limit myself to some scenarios here, no more coding pls  ::)

Well I finally found the hello topic...

(
I'm good with map editors and in making scenarios/campaigns. Or at least I think so. And I like designing races/factions/campaigns/games. The only problem is finishing em.

I can a bit of pixelart (I learned it to be able to make my own wesnoth units). But further I'm no good with graphics (except for editing existing textures :wicked: ).

And I like Glest very much!!! (It's  the best RTS for linux, and I even prefer it above AoE II and I. (I don't have III so I can't say anything about that one)

Hi, I'm new to the boards, I've been a guest for months!
USA is fine, but I used to live in Toronto, Canada and it's WAY better!

Now I live in Maine, but it's not as nice. I don't know why, but I just don't like it as much. I've been to LA once and it was WAY to crowded for my tastes! (Roads=Hell) :O

Hey, I used to be an archmage, but now I'm not.

I'm the modman.  I'm 14 now; I'll be 15 in January.  I found Glest through downloadfreegames.com.  I've tried and failed at finding better games; there are none.  You can't buy a better game because even if it's great, you still won't be able to mod it.

I tried to teach myself C++ over last summer (2008) and now I know how to make simple conversion programs and text based simple games.  I learned XML and all there is to know about it simultaneously with C++.  My goal (starting now) is to learn modeling with Blender, texturing, and animation before I become a sophomore at Wauwatosa West (Go Trojans!!).  My goal with Glest is to use the skills I get from modding it to learn how to make my own game.  So I guess you could say I want to be a C++ programmer when I grow up.

I'm from Wauwatosa, Wisconsin in the United States.  I convinced one guy to download Glest; he's dead now because of the Database problem.  He used to be trips o hoy.

I'm currently working on 2 factions: Dark Magic and Tech II.  You can find topics about them in the mods forum.

Since I just had to remake my account, I suppose now is as good a time to introduce myself as any other.

I'm John, 20 years old, from central Florida, a college student, a Christian, and a bit of a hillbilly sometimes.  I used to be an engineering student and I've got a little experience in 3D modeling in AutoCAD, so I can model buildings fairly well (I think).  I've got no experience using Blender or modeling people or animals, though.  I've never done texturing either.  I'm a lot better at coming up with ideas than actually creating anything from them.  I've had a class in programming in C, but I'm far from being a qualified programmer.  I can write a program to convert between metric and standard units, but that's about the extent of my abilities.

I'm currently developing two new factions, Sun and Moon, and I'm already coming up with ideas for Earth and Sky to go along with them.  I want to try to focus on Sun and Moon right now, but it's hard to keep creativity from flowing.  I had a thread dedicated to these two factions back before the database got wiped out and I plan on restarting it when I come up with some new content to add.

Hi there,

my name is Andy, 21 years of age,  from Germany.
I'm pretty new to Glest, a friend of mine told me about it yesterday when I asked him for a good open source RTS game  ). I'm planning on studying electrical engineering after school, but I'm interested in things like computer science, too, I just don't want to make a living of it.

I even consider joining the dev team, but I don't know if I have enough time for working on a project like this right now. I guess it also would be good to get to know Glest a bit better first ;).

Welcome, Weetee.  Whether or not you feel like joining the dev team, we still have a very active modding community and they are all (for the most part) very helpful, so if you get the urge to make a mod, feel free to ask us for help.  You can check out the Mod forum to see what we're currently coming up with.  There are also some really good tutorials on there to help you get started.

Good luck and have fun!

Developing Glest is unneccessary. Most of the people (I'd say about 99.5%) on this board have NO idea how to program. My programming knowledge is very limited, and is mostly math and simple structure. Just play glest, study the XMLs and such to learn it. Glest is a great game, and programming is the last thing you'll need to learn to enjoy it. (Though programmers are very helpful)

I am the little brother of modman, and have helped him on his mods.  I am 12 years old (I turned 12 in March).  I am in 6th grade, and I like working on my computer, playing baseball and ice skating.  I enjoy learning about world history, and I know a lot about medieval European history.  My mods are the Invaders Techtree, most of the texturing and 2d art and visual effects and a little thought for Dark Magic, and some work that was never released on Dwarves, Elves, TechII and Military. I also drawn the concept art for Dark Magic.   Until now modman and I have worked together on modman projects.  In projects such as Dark Magic, I will work under the name of modman, just to keep things convenient. For new projects I will work under the Mark avatar.

Hi !

Please allow me to introduce myself, Nicolas, 20, student in Game Design and Production Management in Supinfogame (France).

To introduce the context, I'm currently in my 3rd year in this school. Our fourth and last year is dedicated to the design (conception) of the game and development of a playable prototyp of the game. Groups have just been formed, and I'm responsible for the technical part of the project.

While searching for engines that would fit our needs to develop the game (When Gods play -Working Title-), I was sent on your website and saw that Glest's engine would probably be a great help for the development.

That's why I have some questions I would like to ask you, and I hope you'll get the time to answer it.

I'm gonna create another thread to ask those, cyu there ^^

When you finish making these games at school, will you release them to the public (free and open source). Is it in english though (france == french).

Depends on the game, the team, and the school ^^
For example, on game made last year had a good success during the final jury and created a partnership with a french writer, Bernard Werber. Then the autor decided to create his own company to develop the game, officialy.
Some game (few, and mostly projects from others years, like those we work on during so-called "Intensives weeks") can be open-source, but more on our portoflio's than on 'official' OS website's. Last year projects are rarely open-source, mostly because people want to keep them in a drawer, to be able to develop those later, if they have an opportunity. (Last year projects are student's game concept, picked by a jury... So it's quite their babies for those who have been picked ^^)

And France is good in english, as long as i talk about the country, French is only for language & nationality ^^

I'm a 16 years old french student and i've discovered glest some time ago. I'm a cs player and i only play glest for fun and because i kinda like the modding capabilities of the game. I've got a few ideas on how to improve it btw . I don't really have any knowledge in coding / scripting , i simply edit the game files using notepad and also some game menu images with the gimp ( i'm not a designer but i know a few things and i used to create some weapons skins for FPS ) i'm using windows ( windows LSD , a hacked windows xp ) but i also use ubuntu .

Heya, RTS newbie here, figured Glest looked like a fun game to actually get good with, since I can't just cheat my way through it like Warcraft: Orcs and Humans, and Starcraft. Played the tutorials and a custom match, and the game is very impressive.

So long as everyone acts mature we're always glad to have anyone around! Diversity of thought is the key to a successful thinktank/branstorm. Fresh minds have new ideas. Different eyes see hidden problems and concealed solutions. And to top it off, many hands make light work.

Enough people come, go, and take hiatuses to make it hard to track who is "current". So it's not that you weren't missed, just that everyons s busy! Welcome back bro.

Hello all.  I'm an old AI hand but new at gaming.  I was looking for a game that I could experiment with on my own and maybe contribute to if things worked out.  To that end I've downloaded the source and had a quick look.  It would be nice though to look at any documentation and the work others have done.  A search of the GAE forum turned up some talk on A* but not much else.  Any guidance as to where I should begin looking, good sites for info, documentation (I've downloaded the manual but not much on the AI there from what I've seen so far)?  Thanks for the help.  Cheers.

Welcome! :)
To get GAE downloads go here (http://sourceforge.net/projects/glestae/files/).
For the latest source as of now(0.2.12b), here (http://sourceforge.net/apps/trac/glestae/browser/tags/0.2.12b/source).
To download the latest source, I don't know, you'll have to ask silnarm.

We've always wanted AI improvements! ;D

Post by: Omega on 25 January 2010, 20:38:11
You'd probably want the source for 0.2.13 (use SVN). It's the one currently in developement. However, Silnarm is working on pathfinding. Any help there is appreciated though!

Hi guys!

It's been over two years since I've posted on this forum. Looking back at my old posts, I realized how much I sucked at English. :D And why have I been using so big font size? It's ridiculous. I don't even remember that.

Anyway, I thought of Glest few days ago and played a game against CPU. :) Now I got this E-mail announcement and decided to check back.

As far as I see (and according to Alexa), Glest popularity in the last few months is increasing so this is a great time to get back in game. I won't promise anything though - last time I said I was returning you never heard from me again.

Well, see ya (I hope)! ;)

BTW - I changed my nickname from andyglest to andy0101

I was looking for some kind of RTS Engine and I found Glest. I play the game for a few hours and I really like it. I must admit the game has something from the old RTS games. Good job to all of you who worked at this project.

Hello there everyone, recently downloaded what looks to be a very promising RTS game. I'm rather shocked about it's price tag of :Zero dollars!

I'm a bit worried though, that my laptop might not be able to handle this game.

A little bit about me, I'm a senior in high school. Actually, I got to a charter school currently, and I graduate this coming June. I'm an average gamer, though I admit I don't log enough RTS hours to boast or brag. :O

Matter of fact, I've just been playing chess for the past month or so, if that even counts as RTS (I don't think so).

The following are specs of my laptop:

Dell Inspiron 1545
Processor: Pentium (R) Dual-Core CPU              T4400  @  2.20 GHz   2.20 GHz
Installed Memory (RAM):  3.00 GB
System Type:  64-bit Operating System
Windows 7 Home Premium.

The thing is though, I haven't the slightest idea what my video card is.

That's all for now, looking forward to meeting you all.

~Happy gaming

Post by: Omega on 5 May 2011, 06:18:18
Welcome to Glest!

The thing is though, I haven't the slightest idea what my video card is.
The simplest, most universal way to find out your Graphics Card on Windows 7 is to right click anywhere on the desktop, choose "Screen Resolution" > "Advanced Settings" and it should be the first thing on the first tab.

The original Glest Game is no longer in development, and has instead been branched to two forks, the Glest Advanced Engine (http://sourceforge.net/projects/glestae/), which is more feature-filled and geared towards single-player, and MegaGlest (http://sourceforge.net/projects/megaglest/), which has a vastly improved multiplayer. These engines plan to merge in the future, but that is expected to take some time. A comparison of the engines can be found on the Glest Wiki page (https://docs.megaglest.org/Engines). The best maintained lists of mods are also on the Glest Wiki: Factions/Techtrees (https://docs.megaglest.org/Mods/List), Tilesets (https://docs.megaglest.org/Tilesets/List), and Maps (https://docs.megaglest.org/Maps/List).

We hope you'll enjoy Glest!

I feel ashamed I have forgotten about this community and Glest, woe is me. Anyways since it's Dec.26th, a belated Merry Christmas to everyone! =D
I am currently on another RTS game called Sins of a Solar Empire: Trinity which I highly reccomend for those into space science fiction war. It's very similar to Star Wars: Empire at War but it's a more flexible game engine so no need to have a high performance machine to play it. I'm glad I remembered this place and my password (haha) so I just wanted to stop by and say hi to everyone.

One of my hobbies is translating open source games into Scots Gaelic, because it's a minority language and there isn't that much available yet. So, I did a hunt around the net for games I think worth translating and I found Glest. :D

Hello. I'm Lican. I've been playing Glest for 1 year.
Now I'm living in New York. I'm learning programming. Basic, basic programmer, C++, and nothing special...
Hiphop dance is my favourite. Not very poor, but not very good. The most diffcult of this dance is how to controlling the hips. So I should spent more time to practise,...
I love Glest because while I'm playing Glest I can easily capture awesome screenshots, smart AI & XML system, library of units, and much more...
My computer :
512 Mb RAM  (One another 1 Gb Ram has been damaged, should be upgraded soon), 192 Mb are used for Video card memory.
CPU : 2.9 GHz

When will the GAE v 4.0 Full Release be released ?

Welcome to the boards everyone, thanks for registering!

Jzen: it's not odd at all when people like to mod, we very much like to see people getting into modding (and practice and thrive to become good at it).

I guess I never introduced myself here either (I'm mostly interested on-topic ;-) so I missed this thread).
I'm a guy in his mid-thirties living in Berlin, Germany. I contribute to MegaGlest by means of spreading the word, testing, managing websites + hosting, managing translations, and a little bit of scripting.
If you'd like to know more about MegaGlest I'd recommend you read the interview linked in my signature.

That was spam, Alket. You'd notice that it was their only post, they didn't mention anything at all related to this site, and they immediately pushed links to soundcloud and youtube.

LoubiTek is a human, we chatted on IRC and s/he has translated a lot of english -> french during those past days.

Well, my name is Djordje, i like FPS and strategy games, my PC can't handle newer games, so this one is ideal for me.
I'm from Serbia, i'm 13 years old  (14 in 4 days)
I'm willing to test new features in the game for future updates

Hi everyone

I'm Ismael, currently in the world of design, trying to improve experiences by modifying even the smallest part that usually goes unnoticed. I used to play MegaGlest every day back on 2014,  now it's time to give it a new try.

I'd like to help the community in the search of a more visually appealing MegaGlest

> how can i acces the glestguide ?

I'm afraid it's dead and it pre-dates me even knowing version control systems, lol. You're not missing too much, though. It would have been extremely outdated. I had concentrated my efforts on the Glest wiki for years after abandoning the Glest Guide.
