Title: Glest runs rather slowly/choppy on my system. Suggestions?

I downloaded Glest about two weeks ago, and it seems like it is a very well-made game. But my computer seems to have some trouble running it(it gets really choppy), and so I have been discouraged from playing it and I kind of just forgot about it for a while. Now I am thinking, "You know what Moses....maybe you should not have given up so easily. Here you are missing out on something that you may be able to enjoy with a little bit of work.". lol, so here I am. :)

I agree, I have less powerful specs than yours and it runs good on openSUSE 10.2 and Windows XP. Perhaps it is a driver issue or you could try disabling Aero which was suggested in a previous post.

It has been some years since I have done this. Any advice for partitioning? I presume that you would recommend suse as the distro.

Regarding "Aero"...
okay, i see that it is just the tradename for vista's "sweet" interface. I have switched to the "crap" interface before, and ran glest under that, but to no avail. I am pretty sure I tried glest under the crap interface. it my have been some other game that was not running well. I will try it again. But I am pretty sure I have already tried it and it did not help. BTW, my research just revealed the existence of the 3d flip feature for the windows. I had no idea it could do that. Very impressive. lol...

It definitely does look familiar, but I must have forgot about it. I think I remember seeing it on tv.

it goes by the lowest rating as you were probably already aware. the 2.9 is from "graphics" which refers to windows desktop aero performance.

processor: 4.9
memory: 3.9
graphics: 2.9(as previously mentioned)
gaming graphics: 3.0
primary hard disk: 5.4

I am thinking of just setting up a dual-boot system, with Linux. Probably Ubuntu. And I will play games under that.(games that are compatible with linux, that is. lol)

What to do:
-reduce the number of lightsources to 1
-use bilinear filters

If this doesn't help
switch off 3d-Textures, this should help but it doesn't look very nice!

I have an old ubuntu(6.06 Dapper) and an unused winxp and there was no Problem installing these. First install Vista, than install Ubuntu.

If want to install glest on your ubuntu system, use the loki installer from http://http://liflg.org/?catid=7&gameid=58 and install it in your user directory.

And YES I think glest will run much better with ubuntu than with vista (escpecially with your system specs).

Age of Empires 3 runs like total scheiss(is that the right word? lol) on my system. Medeival Total War(the first one), runs decent enough. The first Cossacks runs good too. (I tried out their demos) But those two games are rather old. Do you know of any RTS' free or not that would run well on my system if I had Ubuntu? Probably no major commercial RTS's will not run on Ubuntu.

For that matter, what are some linux compatible games(free or commercial, RTS or otherwise) that would run well on this system if I had Ubuntu?

press and hold the right mouse button, then click on the propeties, (or what, i dont really know its english name), then click on the compatibility tab. activate the compatibility with other systems, and click on winXP (or win95).

Thanks for trying, but I really do not think that option is available for vista.
I did some research on it, and apparently it is an xp thing only. I tried what you said, and I could not find the option. I just don't think vista has that feature. But thanks again for trying to help.

I am thinking that the dual-boot linux solution is probably my best option. I have been looking into that. I don't want to allocate too large of a partition though. My HD is decent enough size(250 gig), so I should still be able to keep a sizeable majority of it for vista, but still have enough room for ubuntu and multiple large games.
