Title: Glest 3.0.0 alpha released - With experimental multiplayer
Post by: martiño on 16 November 2007, 20:31:48
Hello,

I've just posted version 3.0.0-alpha, this is a huge step for Glest, and includes an experimental version of LAN/Internet multiplayer for test purposes.

The network game is not working properly yet (the games might get out of sync and eventually crash), however I wanted to share with everybody the progress we made so far.

This patch includes the windows binaries, if you want to play on Linux, you will have to download and compile latest code from the SVN, but still use the data files in the zip.

How to run the game:

- Download and install Glest 2.0.1 for windows
- Download the patch from here:
Code: [Select]
http://www.glest.org/files/misc/glest_m ... _patch.zip- Unzip the patch in the same folder as glest, making sure that all the old files get overwritten
- One player has to host the game: go to "new game" and open some network slots
- The other players have to join by typing the IP of the host in the "join game" menu and then clicking on "connect".
- The host has to launch the game.
- If you are behind a router, you will have to use the IP of the router and redirect TCP port 61357 to your machine.
- If you disable fog of war or change any other files in the glest folder the game is more likely to get out of sync and crash.

You can also get latest from
Code: [Select]
SVN and compile it for any platform.

Remember that this version is experimental, please do not complain if it doesn't work for you, we are still developing and testing it.

Martiño.

Hey,

Praise Martinho!

Hmm, can we change our names, anywhere? Can we talk to each other ingame? Can we use letters in IP adresses as well?

Excellent news! As soon as I get back home, I'll download it, and hopefully be able to test it later. WOW!

Edit

Hopefully you'll have it available for Linux soon too! Still excellent news!

No, it is the simplest possible implementation, so no nice interface features, we are focusing on making it work first.

Ah, geeze.  This is a good thing overall for me.  I was working on making an adaptable AI, but didn't get very far on putting it into Glest.  Looks like I'll keep it on hold.  Bad new is I'll probably have to download all the stuff again and re-modify some stuff.  Good new is that we can train the AI better, because we could give it better initial values because it can observe two people playing.

Title: 3.0 Data files
Post by: thebohemian on 17 November 2007, 20:15:51
Any idea when the data files for 3.0 appear? I am trying to run the game on GNU/Linux and cannot simply run a binary patch for a Windows app ...

YEAH, Glest rocks!
I'm so happy you found the time and motivation to develope this.
Can't wait to test it on my machine ;)
This gives me a good reason to push our mod developement forward (viking/norse).
Are costume techtrees already implemented? Will find out soon.

I dont know if you have fixed this but skirmish didnt work with V1 of the Multiplayer Alpha, anyway this is great. It worked perfectly with SST:LD 2.

Great work,  multiplayer makes glest finally the best free RTS alvailable.

I tried alpha2 from svn on my GNU/Linux system and it worked. I had to change utopia to helvetica and to add the network relatey stuff to the ini-file and then it worked. There's just one issue remaining: The glest process wont termitnate. I run glest in a terminal simulation and it stays alive until I send the TERM-Signal manually.

On the font matter, you might find this patch useful:
http://svn.debian.org/wsvn/pkg-games/pa ... rev=0&sc=0 (http://svn.debian.org/wsvn/pkg-games/packages/trunk/glest/debian/patches/15_use_fixed_fonts.dpatch?op=file&rev=0&sc=0)

It would be nice to have it incorporated in the game and deliver the font in the -data package. The fixed font used is free and there wouldn't be any license issue.
