Hi guyz...I'm trying to start 3d modeling for Glest (For My Game...)
and 3ds max or CAD seems a bit hard for me...
so I was wondering if anyone can suggest an easy modeler that is okay for glest AND is free...(3ds Max is so expensive!)
Thanx...
-
whoever said you had to "pay" for 3DS Max? I doubt that half of the Max users actually bought max for such a high price. I can garauntee you could find it at a computer pawn shop for a fraction of the price. Also, 3ds Max isnt too hard once you get accustomed to where all the features are located.
-
The export plugin of Glest is only for 3ds max. If you want make your models in another software, make sure you can export your models to 3ds max so that you can use the Glest export plugin.

Can somebody tell me where I can get a descent modelling tutorials?

For 3D modelling basics:
http://www.3dbuzz.com/ (http://www.3dbuzz.com/)
These guys have some of the best tutorials and they're free. They are handed out on a points basis earned by getting involved in the community, but thats a small price to pay IMO :)

In this tutorial: http://www.3dkingdom.org/modules.php?op ... =0&thold=0 (http://www.3dkingdom.org/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&sid=341&mode=thread&order=0&thold=0)
you learn how to model, texture and animate a low poly character. This tutorial was very useful for me when I began to make the Glest characters

Are you saying that you were a beginner when you first joined Glest? I would have thought you had previous experience.
-
Thanks guys...it helped me a lot!
(i mean it.) by the way, does anybody know an engine called
xion?

When I joined the Glest team, I was going to make the concept art, I had a few knowledge of 3D but my first occupation were the drawings; for this reason when I began to make the models for the game I had to search for some information about the modelling, texturing and animation techniques.
-
who was the 3D artist before you?
-
Marcos Caruncho, he is the author of the models of buildings that are in the game at the moment, you can see him in the credits page. In the first versions the unit models were made by Martin-o.

what about the newer castle model?
-
That one was made by Tucho, based on the one which Marcos made; Tucho will make a new one for v1.0.
-
what is the expected release for 1.0? Just give me a wild guess.
-
It must be finished by the first week of september.
-
Have you thought about adding a video feature to show in between missions (like a victory movie) that is of course if it will have missions
-
mmm... good idea, but for now we don´t have missions and tucho is working overnight to finish the buildings... he´s working on some renders for the still screens when loading the game and after playing, but more than that... anyway, nice suggestion :)
-
Because you say it's a good idea, does that mean it will be put at the top of the wishlist? I think adding a short video in between each mission would be awesome (perhaps showing a a dragon fly over the castle after beating the dragon mission) If I could be sure it was going to be implemented I would start rendering some animations right now for my game. One question, what texture color will show up transparent in Glest? Black doesn't turn transparent.
-
in order to include the team color in your models you must save the texture in tga format; this format can save the transparency of the image; the transparent areas of the image have the team color while in game; you must also write CustomTexture=True in the user properties of 3ds max (click left button with your model selected, properties---> user properties).
-
when you say "transparent areas of the image" what color do you mean by "transparent"
-
that is a very good example. It looks like I am going to have to reinstall photoshop.
