Download binaries (http://downloads.sourceforge.net/glest/glest_linux32_bin_3.1.2.tar.gz?use_mirror=osdn) and data (http://downloads.sourceforge.net/glest/glest_data_3.1.2.zip?use_mirror=osdn). Source code (http://downloads.sourceforge.net/glest/glest-source-3.1.2.tar.bz2?use_mirror=osdn) also available (but we recommend the official binaries, thanks to titus for compliling them).

I'm something of a newbie here, and I don't exactly get how to install Glest on Linux, outside of typing "emerge glest" in a console (my problem with this is that portage currently only has 2.0.1). I have both of the packages, now what do I do. Any help?

Yeah, glest is somewhat easy in that case, Although the performance is not system optimised, but its currently the only Way to play online.
Unfurtunately this will probably only work on a 32bit linux, if you have a 64bit, you might to compile.

Thaks for Glest! :D

Dr.Dixie and other gentoo users, I'll try to write ebuild for last version and maintain it, but not very soon.
-
there is a gentoo ebuild being developed
with it I managed to compile glest on my amd64 machine with the newest ati-drivers (8.493).
http://http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=208291
the ebuild still needs some work, though. So if anyone likes to help - feel free ;)

it's in standard suse repo but in case anybody wants 1-click-install
heres the link

There is one problem with Glest version check (sensitivity on different version). I downloaded Glest from http://www.getdeb.net (http://www.getdeb.net) site where guys recompiled Glest 3.1.2 for Ubunutu distro but they appended ~getdeb suffix to version (GetDeb's Glest version is 3.1.2-1~getdeb1). This Glest cannot play over network with other binary compilation of the same Glest 3.1.2 version since Glest checks the version on both network sides. It seems that Glest insist on exact the same version mark. If on one network side is Ubuntu's official compiled version e.g. 3.1.2-ubuntu and on another GetDeb's 3.1.2-getdeb they cannot interconnect and play over network. Is there a solution for that?

How can I start glest 3.1.2 in non full screen mode? I liked the ability in 3.0.0 to play the game in a window.
Also, it would be nice if the music paused/stopped when I paused the game as well.
Great, fun game though!
Cheers,
Walt

@hemma:
You can toggle fullscreen with alt+enter when game is running or you change Windowed=0 in the file glest.ini to 1 .
@sbrbot:
You should only use the official binary to play multiplayer glest!
There are still heavy ou of sync problems with different compiled binaries. That's why build time and all the things are checked!
Even 64-bit linuxers should use the 32-bit binary.
