Title: What Happened To Multiplayer Games?
Post by: orion on 31 March 2008, 22:39:18
What happened to the irc? Every time I log on, there are only 3 people on and nobody is playing. Are people using something different nowadays?

Hi, i think the same, its so sad that we are only few players. I would use every lobby but till now i am not convinced that xfire and aflobby are so much better than irc... means: Xfire is win-only,right? and AF-lobby crashes often on my linux, i wasnt able to play a game via it till now.

the IRC channel isn't very well frequented at the moment, however there is quite a bit of traffic consisting of:

01:00 PlayerX has joined #glest
01:01 PlayerX: hello?
01:02 * PlayerX has quit

If only all these drifters stayed around we might eventually reach a critical mass (even if three quarters of us are idling!).

What's the point of staying if no one to play? People only stay when there's actually someone to talk to or play against. The problem of so few players will only be fixed if cross platform would be, so the linux and windows players can play together.

How are you suppost to find someone to talk to if there is no one who stays in the first place?

Exactly!! This is my point. We need to find a way to advertise Glest some more and we need to find a way to make all of those idle people on the irc not idle.

PS: I just reached Archmage status. YAY!! :D

Those people have other things to do instead of watching to see when other people get on, and keeping the IRC on lags other games and stuff so people quit out of it if no one is on. What's the point of staying when your not even paying attention to the IRC? The other person would have no one to talk to anyways.

I just wish that those people that quickly come on and off would just stay for a bit longer because some of the people on the irc are idle because they actually are searching for a game. I wish ice chat had some sort of alert that tells you when people log on. That way, those that are looking for games will instantly know when a possible player logs on.

When AFLobby crashes it tells you where how and why it crashes via a stack trace. If you had sent me that stack trace the problem would have been fixed by now. I look forward to your feedback!

Maybe this can be used to create lobby client for glest (I just don't like java otherwise I would vote for AFLobby :) )

Thanks Lafriks. I think Mono (http://http://www.mono-project.com/) will be needed to use this on Linux since it is written in C#.

That should be no problem as mono has made a quite good progress lately and there should be no problems running windows form applications on linux/mac using mono.
If you think this would be ok using mono/.net solution for this I can make it look better and integrate it with Glest.

Well, if this topic is related to Glest, the I think everyone here uses the same software to play online: Glest.

I would really like to see, what would happen, if a main lobby were established.
