I recorded my desktop and made two videos for beginners,
They show how to create working glest models with blender.
You should have some basics knowledge about blender to follow the videos )
( And sorry for my stammering, it's the frst time I made something like this.)
1.)
creating a first working model:
http://www.titusgames.de/film/firstModel.avi (http://www.titusgames.de/film/firstModel.avi)
2.)
handling of textures:
http://www.titusgames.de/film/texture.avi (http://www.titusgames.de/film/texture.avi)
( If you have trouble with the videos, use vlc mediaplayer from http://www.videolan.org (http://www.videolan.org) to playback )
UPDATE:
3.)
simple animation:
http://www.titusgames.de/film/simpleAnim.avi (http://www.titusgames.de/film/simpleAnim.avi) (17MB)
screenshots of the created models in action::

Does anyone think these kind of videos are useful, or do you think they are just silly and dumb?
-
Hi titi,
i think it covers the part that it is intendet to. Its not possible to show everything in video because theres so much to know about glest-modding(especially in blender/ or glexempel on linux-windows).
So if you want a tutorial that covers everything how to create modells from scratch for glest you need to create a pdf or stuff which can be more structured than a video.
I once created a gif which showed the texturing-settings in blender needed for glest; perhaps i will expand it and we can fill out the wiki.
Do you know a way how to include a video into html/ any other documenttype so it can be structured via text and then you are shown the buttons by a short video?

like this ( for linux you should use the mplaxer plugin but how do I integrate this as recommended plugin?? )
<object width="425" height="344">
<param name="movie" value="http://www.titusgames.de/film/firstModel.avi"></param>
<param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param>
<embed src="http://www.titusgames.de/film/firstModel.avi"
type="video/xvid"
allowfullscreen="true"
pluginspage="http://go.divx.com/plugin/download/"
width="425"
height="344">
</embed>
</object>
try it:

Great!
what are you using for screen capture. I see you are using ubuntu maybe, it will work on a mac ?

I've uploaded them here:

I've credited you in the description and put a link to your site, if want to change anything else please tell me.
Regards.

I made some pictures for windowsusers how you use glexempel to get your model xml to g3d and into glest.
Pictures are from vista but it can be used for xp too.

I dont get a embedded version working, so i must upload it elswere to be used in the wiki.
-
I think this perfect to be put into a wiki-article(https://docs.megaglest.org (https://docs.megaglest.org)).
-
nice tutorial, but it doesn't seem to work with my version of blender (2.46) which version of blender are you using?
-
I have put the videos on a summarypage in the wiki. Does anybody know how to create an embeded version ? htmlcode does not work copy/paste and the videofunctions seem to copy the full video there... dont know if to do that.

Check out https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Images_and_Video#Videos (https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Images_and_Video#Videos) or the page the Glest videos are on https://docs.megaglest.org/Videos (https://docs.megaglest.org/Videos)

titi, perhaps you can make more of it
Yes. Good work titi.

Wow, what an amazing feedback!
I'm back from vacation now, and I will definitly create some more videos now.
Next one will be animation also wciow made a tutorial in the meantime ... I'm usually using weightpainting, so it's a bit different from wciows way to do it.
I'm using "record my desktop" to create the films. ( http://recordmydesktop.sourceforge.net (http://recordmydesktop.sourceforge.net) )
It's an eas to use tool, but it's not able to create really smooth running glest in game videos yet ( for me ).

Dang, I wish I could make some models... But naturally, the xml2g exporter doesn't work, it just says error parsing xml, even on imported G3D's. I downloaded the patch thing, but no success. It is a bit confusing. I ythink I need GNU compiler or something... (tried downloading it, it's all code. If I could compile the code, I wouldn't need the compiler)
Can someone upload a windows vista compatible xml2g program?
Would apreciate that, cause I wanna try this simple tutorial and make a few models. (actually, I already made a really nice model, but I can't export it from the xml)
-
Here is a new video:
http://www.titusgames.de/film/simpleAnim.avi (http://www.titusgames.de/film/simpleAnim.avi) (17MB)
-
I wish you would say every keystroke that you're doing, because otherwise it's really hard to follow what you're doing.
-
ive had a little problem here, and that is the export to xml for glest option in the export menu. im on windows and currently without pythin installed, ove looked here and there but really dindt need python for anything so :D, but anyways, where do i get that export option, wich i assume atually is a script yes?
Also, you are being a little "fast" when you do textures, in that when you use the nummeric keyboard the screen just moves and if the user dont know or is beginner to blender i might just give them problems.
anyways, good tut.
-
Hi, you need to install the export script from http://www.titusgames.de/ to get the export option.
And yes, that's right, I'm a bit fast, but I wanted to focus just on glest(exporter) specific things ( which I hope are shown detailed enough ).
For blender related stuff there are enough tutoriels/videos out there.
There is one thing which is newer/better now, because the glest exporter can export directly to g3d now, which was not the case when I made those videos.
More hints for beginners:
https://docs.megaglest.org/Blender_Modelling
( especially this part: https://docs.megaglest.org/Glest_Blender_Hints )
anyways, good tut.
thanks :) but my english is very funny .... ::)
I think it really helps the beginnes to get first results and there are lots of people creating models for glest since I released this videos.
-
Oh, thanks, :D, and that sounds really awsome :D, easyier means faster :D, you tut also revealed (i think) how to animate ;D. cant wait to get those models into glest :D. i want a space mod :D, much like starcraft :D, but ofc its not gonna BE starcraft :D. im gonna go get it now, and also thanks for the quick reply :D
-
Okay, i seem to have a little truble with the script, it wont show up in the export menu. ive installed python, but it wont show up in the command line for blender, it still says python not installed. and ive put the script into the script folder. still nothing happens. :/
any ideia to whats wrong?

I just revived this topic because I learned how to model using Titis video tutorial.
And I think thees might be useful to other newbies.
Thanks! Titi!

I learned from both this and omega's.
