awesome, i love your tilesets titi.
-
It looks good so far. I like it!

I used the old models, 3 hours of work and these pictures for textures:

Come to think of it, the pines look a little too healthy. I suppose some of them would be evergreens, but some of them should probably be turning brown.
-
No, it's a healthy forest, glest has a perfect world ;).
But I will indeed slightly change their color in the next version.
Did you tried it yet?
-
Not yet. I'll probably give it a try when I get home tomorrow.
-
Hey titi, I was wondering if you have any tips for making trees? Do you use a specific sofware? I tried a trial for a tree maker software which makes very low poly glest style trees, and it can export as obj, but of course, such a trial does not allow exporting. What do you use for your trees? I want to try and make a totally new tree soon... Any help is apprceiated, and your tileset looks great!
-
I believe they were created manually.
Edit: You should make the leaves at lease 1/3 the size they are. =\
-
@Zaggy: No, I already tried the small size, it doesn't look good.
@modman: I made the trees manually. But here is how to do it:
1. build up the tree trunk with some big branches.
2. create one twig for the tree. This is simply a plane with a texture on it. The plane is probably a bit curved.
The trick is to use a texture with a transparency background like this:
http://www.burningwell.org/gallery2/v/t ... 9.PNG.html (http://www.burningwell.org/gallery2/v/textures/plants/leavesAndBranches/TT7020419.PNG.html)
Tune this one twig until it really looks good ( with texture and all this setup. )
3. Now copy the twig several times and put it on the tree. While doing so , resize, rotate or mirror the copied twig a bit to make them look different.
Thats all....
Try it, its really easy. If you start with a simple ground plant, you don't even have to create a tree trunk. So start with this!
The secret are the good textures, thats why I'm currently put so much energy in creating texture fotos at burningwell.org ( all public domain, and completly free to use )
ah,I forgot:
Glest has problems with the light on the twigs. If the twig is made with a single plane and its normal faces to the sun, it gets lighted. But the other side of the plane is also lighted. This looks a bit strange. In cases where you will see both sides in the game you better do something like this:
Before copying the twigs to the tree, copy the twig one time and place it below the original one (very near to it.) like this:
_______________________ plane 1
-------------------------------- plane 2
Now you give plane 1 a normal, showing to the top and plane 2 a normal showing to the bottom.
now this 2 plane thing is your twig you will copy. But this trick is only needed if you will see both sides of the twig in glest.
For example my pine trees didn't need it.
I think i will make a video tutorial showing how to make a plant.

you could use the blender Curves to Trees script and not use the the subsurf option that way you can get low-poly trees and fast.
-
There are tree generators you can download though.
-
There are tree generators you can download though.
There is? Can you recommend some free ones?
-
Most are free versions of the real thing, but most aren't timed, just some features you cannot use.
I downloaded this one. It can save as a 3d file format (obj I believe) (http://http://www.treegenerator.com/treegenerator.zip)
I didn't download this one, but feel free to do so yourself (http://http://www.brothersoft.com/d.php?soft_id=1491&url=http%3A%2F%2Ffiles.brothersoft.com%2Fgraphics_design%2Fmisc_graphics%2FTree_Generator_1491.zip)
Also a good idea is to search Google. It always comes up with good hits.

Whats this?
http://arbaro.sourceforge.net/ (http://arbaro.sourceforge.net/)
And there is lsystem for blender ( and newer dirivates )
-
Wow that's great! I'm using that for my tileset!
-
What's great ?
lsystem or this abaro thing?
Did you test one of them successfully(with models in glest??) ??
I don't know abaro and lsystem only a very little bit( but I never managed to export to glest successfully).
PLease tell me about your results!
-
That arbaro thing is no good...
I have no idea on how to compilee it...let alone because it's Java.
