Title: Request: Volcanic Tileset
Post by: modman on 24 February 2009, 22:07:23
This would be very helpful in moving forward in the project at this topic (https://forum.megaglest.org/index.php?topic=3958.msg22840#msg22840).  The tileset's look is as if everything had just been burned, or as if everything was washed over with scorching lava.  Concept art:

You are requesting an entire tileset  :o

Yes, but it only has to have a few models; this will have few trees and some rocks and red surfaces (and volcanoes! ;D)

Hmm, I always wanted to make a tileset...

Give me a description of all the objects and surfaces and I'll give it a good shot.

OK.  The theme of the tileset is that you are in hell, or the land has been hit by a volcano.  Never mind: better idea.  Dragon's lair.  There should be black rocks, a lava surface, and bones big and small of the things the dragon has eaten.

I like the tree on this one.

This one shows a good overview.

If that's not enough, let me know; I'll be glad to share more.

So, dead burnt up trees, rough rocks, scorched ground, bones, large rocks, water can be lava (fun to walk on ;-D), big rocks can be more like burnt out chunks, etc;

Ok, that'll be interesting. Not sure how long it'll take, but give me a little bit, I mean, with military and all...

I wouldn't mind helping out, tileset making is kinda fun I have to admit.
we'll divide the models I'll do half and you do half, that way it could happen faster.
tell which ones your doing
1) rocks
2) tree
3) objects
4) surfaces

waiting for the answer.

Sure, you can help out. Sorry for a late response (or was it early).

I guess I'll do the objects and surfaces (including water) as well as the XMLs. I'll leave the stones and trees for you, unless you have any objections?

I'm done too. However, I need the trees, big trees, and dead trees. That's all I need. You made all of that, right Gameboy? (I have pictures, but I'm at school, so...) I did the stones, but not the big stone (can always retexture, since there isn't much difference among big stones.

I tested it, and I am very pleased with myself. Damn, am I ever good. ;D

I'm on it.
BTW what objects to include?
A few bones and rocks for the riverside object, anymore?

I create some extra objects ok?

Who is compiling this?  I'm just wondering, because I'll do it if nobody else is.

Titi, you could make a volcano that just erupted as an object.

And what are we to do about trees?

Ahh creating tilesets  is so much fun I can't stop... ( I think I create one on my own if I don't stop now, but this will be something like hell not volcano.)
I'm using bones/skeletons for trees and skullz and bones and gore to decorate the tileset. I will upload everything I make,

Here are the first screenshots of the ground textures ( yes yes still with plants ):

here are the textures for the ground ( including lava water ) if anyone wants them.

Post by: modman on 6 March 2009, 02:42:07
Yes we do!  The textures are fantastic.
A note on the dead objects: Would it be possible if the dead guys looked a bit scorched (maybe instead of the spikes they were burned at the stake?) and also, I just want to point out that the guy "standing" while impaled is most accurate, since it was used as mostly a torture method.  There was Vlad as an exception though.

I don't like the worker head on the ground and in the tree, it is too morbid :'(

Me too.  :'(
And what are those things on the water?
The rest is really good, I like the coffin.
Title: Re: Request: Volcanic Tileset
Post by: titi on 7 March 2009, 01:16:33
Indeed, I also would not prefer to play this tileset, but its fun to make it because its something completly different!
I (personaly)  would always play with something friendly like autumn/imladris/winter/evergreen and so on.
But for some factions, mods or scenarios this could be a cool tileset!
But you are right, I should create a second tileset which is less morbid and has more of a vulcanic style.

Ooh, I've been missing a lot. It looks like Titi's got really interested. Compile things together if you'd like and give them to me in ONE download. To answer the question, I'm compiling this all together modman. I need the trees though.

Here's the image I made about a week ago (I've been out of it, sorry). It is a bit postdated, before Titi came along, so sorry. It shows just my models that I made, though once I get Titi's and Gameboys models, I'll update and choose the best to make the ultimate tileset. However, I aim for one that people would want to play (even though my fav tileset is STILL winter).

NOTES: I like Titi's lava better, but I think my bones are better (sorry, the picture's a little zoomed out). The white rectangles are placeholders for the trees. In picture #5 you can see the carcass model (Titi's bonehouse edited and resized). I think I can mix some of the ground textures of mine and titi's together. I also have a sinister fog in mine.

BOTTOM LINE: I need everything that you have made Titi, along with the trees (gameboy?) in (preferably) one download. Titi's right, Tilesets ARE fun. (Give me an idea for my next).

I'll have a download up when I get Titi's and Gameboy's resources.

I will upload something this evening ( in about 6 hours )
Title: Re: Request: Volcanic Tileset
Post by: Omega on 9 March 2009, 15:30:47
Oh, and just because this is a volcanic tileset  doesn't mean it has to be all gory. This is VOLCANIC, not HELL. It should have a barren, freaky feeling, wiuth bones and stuff, but not heads and bodies.

Sorry Titi. I like your textures though. I already am done most of the models though. Just give me your bones so that I can compare with mine to see which is better. I also do like your lavaa. Statues are a no go though. I replaced them with carcasses.
Title: Re: Request: Volcanic Tileset
Post by: titi on 9 March 2009, 16:24:59
Yes I know, mine is currently called "hell", but I don't really like it. It's too gory.
Nevertheless I will upload what I have. ( currently I'm at work)

Can't wait for the upload!

The only problem I can see is the issue of having lava instead of water.  Won't units be wading through knee-deep lava when crossing a river?  ;D

They get hit by five arrows and don't die...
I'd have to agree with Omega on this one; let's try to keep to volcanic please! ;D

ok here is the hell....

http://www.titusgames.de/hell.zip (http://www.titusgames.de/hell.zip) ( 2.7 mb  of blood and gore )

Its a complete tileset ready to play and has new sounds( not very good sound but new sound )

( look at the big stone! Its a nice active/inactive volcano )

OK Omega is coordinating this apparently, so he is to decide what is kept to put into volcanic.

Yep, I am downloading right now. I should be done by tonight, and I'll upload next time I'm online. Is there trees here though, because I assumed that Gameboy was doing them. I can do them if I need to, but that'll add a day or two.
Title: Re: Request: Volcanic Tileset
Post by: Omega on 11 March 2009, 17:38:23
Sorry for double posting. First of all, I want to assure everyone that things are going good, and I have everything ready except the trees. From Titi's hell tileset I used the volcano (big rock) as seen above, and his normal rock, which looks a lot like a magma rock that has begun to harden.
I tested it and it looks good, although it is hard to say without the trees.

If I don't get the trees by the end of the week, I'll do them myself.

I have a custom ambience sound which has wooshing wind and erruptions. I am thinking of using my own lava rather than Titi's because it helps separate our tilesets, though if anyone wants to argue that point, feel free.

How should the trees look like?
Burned and glowing?
Title: Re: Request: Volcanic Tileset
Post by: Omega on 11 March 2009, 18:14:50
Didn't modman have a picture? It's sort of a dead tree (probably not unlike the dead tree in forest, as I try to remember how it looks). I guess it's a bit charred and stuff.

How do you make a burnt sort of texture using GIMP or Paint.NET? Burn tool is useless, and I'm running out of ideas...

Sorry I'm holding this up, but my exams are looming ahead and my internets down and i'm at a cyber cafe right now.
I've made four tress(only) here they are:http://www.mediafire.com/?mygnmozv1yy
You can use the texture to make more.

Post by: Omega on 13 March 2009, 04:30:22
Ok, thanks gAMeboy. I'm downloading right now...

I'll try to make some more myself with the textures.

// Ok, I've viewed them. They look pretty good. I might also retexture the dead tree from dark forest too. I'll do some modelling myself for some parts.
Title: Re: Request: Volcanic Tileset
Post by: modman on 14 March 2009, 00:32:44
I don't think the trees should glow; Glest really doesn't know how to handle glow.  It treats glowing things like a light switch instead of smoothly brightening the area.

Oh the pictures are all on the first page of this topic.

Post by: Omega on 14 March 2009, 04:00:14
Glow? I'm not sure I follow...

Also, if anyone else wants to give a hand with the trees (even retexturing) I'll be happy for help. I'm gonna be busy though until probably sometime next week, so don't expect me to finish until then...
