This is the first thing I do for Glest,

And the water (probably will be changed because it looks too green).

What do you guys think?
File: http://www.savefile.com/files/2041659Hope you guys enjoy!
-
Very good tileset! When we cant donwload? I think you should let the water in green.
-
I think the water matches the theme (what exactly is the theme again? ;D).
-
The theme is something like a Scrub Land thingy...
It is based on a dry area on north-east Brazil, so I don't know how to say that in english, in portuguese we call Caatinga.
-
The black-white tiles don't seem to fit in, but appart from that it looks like a great tileset! Well done!
-
NIce! good tileset.
-
I think a better name for it would be 'Wasteland' or something. Download?
-
In the US we would call this type of environment -
Badlands or Scabland. (http://hugefloods.com/Scablands.html)
Eastern Nevada looks like this also, its known as the Great Basin. Northwest Nevada has an area of Playa called The Black Rock Desert. Portions of the Mojave Desert in California. Eastern Washington has an area called the Channeled Scablands and of course the Badlands in South Dakota.
NE Brazil Caatinga (http://www.arthurgrosset.com/misc/cerrado.JPG) looks like the Ruby Valley (http://media.point2.com/p2a/htmltext/925a/518e/d755/190bffc692609b3942a6/original.jpg) in Arizona.
Emerald/green water in the tileset is perfect, in fact the whole tileset looks excellent ;D ;D :D
-
Stone Surface:
Maybe replace the checkered tan and white surface with salty mud polygons (http://www.xenotechresearch.com/mudpoly1.htm) found in deserts and on the surface of Mars.
Road Surface:

In Canada, badlands usually refer to places in Alberta and Saskatchewan where Dinosaurs roamed.

-
How could I miss this??
Sorry that I didn't see it. Of course you can use my cactus!
And I really like the green water it looks different and thats good!
Do you need any new model for this? What about some new date palms designed for this tileset?
Or will this be too "green" for a desert?
... and, by the way, we need a download ;)!
(Update: I set this topic as sticky, for a while )
-
Oh wow! I like this tileset a lot. I might have to use it for Sun and Moon, since it looks about like how the edge of the Lanto desert should look. I agree that the tiles look a little strange, though.
-
Don't worry about the Tile, I changed to the polygon thingys.
I will post a download link as soon as I can.
-
Excellent...!

Thanks!
Here is the file:

Enjoy!
-
;D ;D ;D ;D
A very good tileset! Especially the look and feel is good and
the night light is simply GREAT!
I see some little problems:
- The "big tree" object is some kind of grass which is passable now. This will change the gameplay in several maps, I'm still a bit undecided if I like this fact or not. Is it the same setup like dark forest which has similar problems?
- The water has no animation, probably you can give it a very little bit of an animation to make big seas look better. Probabaly add some grey to make it less transparent.
- harvesting cacti???? That's a hard job ::)
-
Titi:
1- It was made from teh Dark Forest, I will check that.
2- I will do that. ;D
3-LoL, I checked that already... I didn't want to make the cactus a bush because the forest would look weird with only those dead trees, but I will try some stuff.
-
try one model with a tree surrounded by cacti or side by side with one.
-
Map: Badwater (beta) was created with this tileset in mind. It will undergo further revision dependent upon tileset tweaking and changes to the object list.

New tree graphic?
Joshua Tree (http://euler.mcs.utulsa.edu/~stephane/Albums/2001/Winter_Break/Photos/Joshua_Tree/Joshua_Tree_12.jpg)
-
This tileset is great, so realistic.
-
What about the license?
Can you release it with the GPL license?
-
Nice idea Trappin! I was trying to find a good tree I had the Thor Acacia in mind but it is too large, that one is perfect!
I changed the water, so soon I will upload the version with water moviment.
-
I think there is too much rain in this tileset!
Try to lower it a lot or remove "rain" completely
-
I did that already. :D
I'm also taking the water objects off, or putting something else there, because it looks weird.
-
titi - harvesting cacti?Huh That's a hard job.
Pickled or fresh in salsa.
http://www.rivenrock.com/ediblecactus.htm
-
Is a new version available? I like this tileset so much pleeease ...
-
Don't worry, I will release it when I fix all the stuff, and I pretend to put some other trees.
-
any news/ updates here?
-
I'm sorry, I just arrived yesterday from Singapore (holidays) so I went the whole week away, but I will post the updates soon. 8)
-
looks really good. No updates yet?
-
Well... I'm really lazy. :P
I changed the Obelisk texture to a Egyptian Obelisk to look better in the "Deserted!" theme, I will post pics soon!
-
wow, i never saw this topic
i like this idea, it's great and very fun to play in
good work! :)
-
What about the tiles? Did you find anything good for them yet? (texture 4).
Really hope that you can get an update, since I really love this tileset.
THE BEST:
1. Winter 2
2. Scrubland
3. Evergreen
-
Oh yes, I got a better tile it will be in the update. ;)
-
Great, just make sure I get the link, since the Glest Guide's MDC (Mod Download Center) will be pointing to the old one. Of course, it'll only take about a minute to fix...
-
where is the update? ::) ::)
-
Sorry dude, but as you see, I didn't show anything else yet, reason:
I'm on my exam month, so, I don't have much time for anything, but don't worry I will upload the new version as son as I can.
-
Awesome tileset, can't wait for the improved version :)
Great work!
-
The Improved version will have:
- New Tile, I removed the square ones;
- Water animation;
- New statues;
- Improved tree models (the ones I used are actually Dark forest trees with changed Alpha);
- And hopefully new Hanged/Impaled models!
I have a lot of school work to do so expect the download in about 1 week.
-
Ok, where is it? ;D ;D ;D
-
Well, he was on 5 days ago.
-
I thought MadElf was a she???
-
what????
-
I think it looks really good. And I like how the water is all green. It makes it look like a land enchanted (negatively) by some evil sorcerer that was once full of greenery but now is a hostile landscape. Good Job!
-
I thought MadElf was a she???
Huh? Does it says his/her gender anywhere? I can't recall anyone mentioning, and the gender section of his/her profile is left blank. Avatars cannot tell the gender, so we are stuck with one option... ♪Oh madelf?♫
I agree with mark and titi, this is a great faction. I'd say my second favorite after winter II.
-
Its not a faction its a tileset, and its awesome. Really well done!
BTW i think modman referred to madelf as 'she' in the glade topic. sneaks off to find it....
https://forum.megaglest.org/index.php?topic=4402.175 tenth post.
"MadElf had a virus, so she will be back the 16th of August."
-
Hmm... Interesting. Is modman sure she is a girl. I wouldn't doubt it, and it would be nice to have some more girls playing glest, seeing the poor male:female ratio on the glest board... Although I'm curious if modman assumed or if he knows. Sorry, I just hate to get someone's gender wrong, though I can imagine it'd be worse in real-life:
'excuse me ma'am, I... dear me!'
-
He probably assumed, but I thought she was a girl because of the famale elf avatar.
-
I just wanted to say this is possiblity the best tileset for Glest. Madelf please release an update :)
-
OT:
If that is the case, then it may easily be a guy. You'd be surprised how many people use avatars of female video game characters for avatars. People tend to like the video game characters, particularily due to a good depth in the story, and avatars of female mains aren't uncommon. A very common female avatar is Yuna of final fantasy X (the sequel where she the true main character doesn't count as a REAL video game).
Other popular avatars is that girl from half life 2 (can't remember the name, been a while), the two female mains from final fantasy VII, various female avatars from only MMORPGs.
Back on topic:
Where is madelf? Everyone wants an update to the tileset. It is one of my favorite, after winter (must be something to do with the true north strong and free?)
-
I don't think I assumed, but I can't remember where my "evidence" is from.
MadElf will be back in about a week I think.
-
That's quite a long week. Do we think we're going to see a fully polished version of this?
-
Nobody has heard from MadElf for a really long time, so I wouldn't hold my breath if I were you.
-
Sometimes people just die off the forums. Its natural. Although very sad, at least it wasn't someone like Omega, who helps a lot of people develop glest skills.
I personally have never played this tileset, but it looks very cool.
-

I'm flattered.
-
It wasn't meant to be flattering, it was my opinion. ::) I meant people who were very active.
Its OK to be flattered. :D
-
OFF TOPIC ALERT!
This has gone so far off topic. Please test the tileset if you have not already, then post critiques. This is what the topic is for.
-
MADELF where have u gone, whaaaahahahah *sniff sniff
-
*Feling guilty and bad* I'm SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO sorry guys, I had a LOT of stuff to do, for quite more than a week, hehe.
But I'm back now and the first thing I will do is to finished Scrubland COMPLETELY, it will be whorth the long wait, ;D
EDIT: I just read the "I thought MadElf was a she" post, hehe I'm a he, my avatar is a Blood Elf female from the game World fo Warcarft. :D
-
Where else Can I download this? Website been down for a long while.
-
I will upload the new version on a different website then ;D
-
This is only tileset i dun have :D
-
Madelf, your back!
Make sure you give us the link to that website, then.
-
Well, since I'm making a new version, and everthing I had changed pretty muich is lost from a Spyware that \I had on my computer, I will ask:
What do you guys want me to change on the Tileset?
-
I don't know what the current state of the water is, but in general I want these things:
https://forum.megaglest.org/index.php?topic=4189.msg23687#msg23687
I think you have to invent another tree/bush or whatever to harvest it.
And a proper license for the tileset would be good! I currently prefer a dual license system ( GPL and CC-BY-SA ) and
I also try to make the next megapack compatible with it.
With these licenses everyone can use it in its way :).
By the way, I would be very happy if I can include this in the next megapack!
-
What do you guys want me to change on the Tileset?
Add Joshua Tree model.
Maybe rethink the white and black colored checkerboard surface type and replace it with a dirt/short grass type texture - the comparative example of that would be titi's winter tileset with the grass and snow - scrub land would just replace the snow with sand, dirt or dried mud polygon and limited patches of green grass.
Looking forward to the next version of this tileset. ;D
-
Here is a landscape like scrubland:
http://www.carto.net/neumann/travelling/joshua_tree_np_gettys_2003_11/
-
titi found an excellent example of Joshua Tree scrub land - those rocky hills are full of sidewinders and rattlesnakes. :o

I snapped this photo of a high plains desert canyon located in NW Nevada, USA. Not many folks live out here - ranchers and a few remote Indian outposts.
