Give me tilesets too.

This would be a great idea.  Why don't you all just go into producing maps, LUA scenarios and tilesets for Glest?  That would be better than making another modding team.  Do something Glade doesn't already do.  There isn't a really good base for these things already, so why don't you start it!  Plus, you'll get better at making maps and tilesets as you go along.  Pretty soon, you'll know all the tricks, and be the best at it!

Tip: Make the maps for forest and winter forest please, because most people use these and they will not have to download another tileset to play your map.

I'm really excited about this new "G2MT" (Glest Map Making Team)!  I like that name too.

We might make some maps or tile sets but we are not only going to make them.
We are going to make mods too and we are not changing the name.

Ya and the wood can look like craters or stones.
Title: Re: --Tileset/Map Productions Team--
Post by: Omega on 21 September 2009, 02:48:14
I agree, it should be everything that this forum is for (tilesets, maps, and scenarios). Note that we should only accept scenarios.

I can do everything, and sign up for that, but I must warn you: I have my own schedule! ;)

I have about five or so maps on spare that are made for military. Must upload them soon. Unfortunately, the 19 scripted scenarios (including the tutorials) that I have made are all for military.

I had a tileset idea, if it's not already done. How about a bamboo forest and oriental theme?
Title: Re: --Tileset/Map Productions Team--
Post by: -Archmage- on 21 September 2009, 11:39:53
Well, come up with a little concept and we'll see who on the team wants to create your tileset.

@Omega: Do you want to join the team?....................................................
Title: Re: --Tileset/Map Productions Team--
Post by: Hectate on 21 September 2009, 18:36:38
Ok. I have some sketches but I don't know when I'll get a chance to upload them.

bamboo shoots and stalks as wood resource
cut bamboo stalks also
ferns and cattails for water plants?
new boulders for stone, versions with gold veins also
small shrines and guardian statues (dragons, lions, tigers)
those gateway-type wood things...
other things we'll think of later too. I'd like to help, maybe I can use some of these models for the video tutorials too.

Can I join too? I want to be a map-maker and if possible a scenario maker (Though this is a map/tileset team lol).

I can make very cool maps just aslong as people have ideas...
Title: Re: --Tileset/Map Productions Team--

Actually this is a branch of GMD team (https://forum.megaglest.org/index.php?topic=4595.msg29931#msg29931) and we make scenarios too, :D
And yes you can join we plan to make a moon tileset for are moon tech, You can make some scenarios for moon men vs martins.
Title: Re: --Tileset/Map Productions Team--
Post by: Scenariole on 24 September 2009, 05:23:28
I also requested to join that team too about a few hours ago. I can get started on them since I have nothing to do, I could even do a quest series like a campaign or story.

Anyways is there a beta version or demo or any release of the techtree out? I'll look for it.
Title: Re: --Tileset/Map Productions Team--
Post by: Scenariole on 24 September 2009, 05:27:28
Sorry for double posting but:

-I don't think there is a link for the techtree. Could archmage or someone give me some xml or details on what units make what? Since I plan to make my scenario's very very fun and unique.

Good omaga  :D are you gona make maps tile-sets or scenarios? or all.
We will be making a moon tile set soon for our moon mod.  ;D
Title: Re: --Tileset/Map Productions Team--
Post by: Trappin on 28 September 2009, 03:41:48
Well, come up with a little concept and we'll see who on the team wants to create your tileset.

I have a request. I'd like the Glest default Forest tileset modified to include two new objects. One Hexagon object and one Heptagon object with both being the same size as a Mossy Rock object. No fancy textures are needed - one solid color will be fine for the test. It doesn't matter which objects get removed from the default object list - but please include the default Mossy Rock object in the new modified tilseset so the 2 new objects can be rendered next to the old Mossy Rock object.

Code: [Select]

Previous attempts to build wall sections have failed due to random alignment features coded into the game. Objects lack a "true north" code, so each object is dropped into the game world not knowing the direction it should face - also - objects aligned in a linear fashion in the map editor will be rendered in-game with slight deviations on linear lines - hence the slightly jumbled - north/east/south/west -  object placement on the screen shot below.

square shaped objects rotate
Code: [Select]

So, why not use a hexagon or heptagon shaped object? An object with 5 or 6 sides solves the "true north" object problem - it won't matter which side faces north. We will still have the not-quite-lined-up non-linear jumbled appearance but if the Hex/Hept objects are double size the same way Mossy Rocks are sized - then some Hex objects will overlap other Hex objects - just as Mossy Rocks do - but with 5/6 sided objects it wont matter because one face of each object will be overlapping the other and thus form partially homogeneous wall connection seams. The new wall sections will still have deviations N/S/E/W along linear lines but i think it will be tolerable due to the shape of each object.

Mossy Rocks aligned.

Code: [Select]

Special maps will need to be constructed with the object rendering limitations in mind but I think with some practice learning how hex objects render on the new tileset - we can ultimately design small scale castle-type siege maps.

Does this make sense to anyone? I think it will work. Anyone on the team want to take on this project?

EDIT: Modified to reflect Hectates comments - Glest random alignment problems features coded into the game.
Edit2: add mossy Rock screenshot

Just a couple thoughts.
1. Random orientation is vital to the visual appeal of "standard" tilesets. The fewer models in each set is better for memory space. Rotation allows greater variety with less memory impact. maybe GAE could add a tileset XL tag to eliminate the eandom orientation on specific models as per the designer's intention. Post in the GAE forum as a feature request.
2. A test wouldn't be hard. Is that your block wall? Blender can do milti sided shapes easily. I believe you just pick the number of sides you need on a circle or cylinder.
3. With rotation, as shown in that screenshot, texture will affect the "seamlessness" greatly.

Good luck!

1) Yes, this is a workaround due to the visual appeal aspects of the game. I wouldn't want that code changed in any form.

2) Not my block wall. I have no idea who did it, sorry.

2) Solid colors for the test. If the rendering looks decent in-game then I think  each different hex object can be used, in conjunction with one another, to overcome the visual rendering limitations for linear object placement.

EDIT: baby steps - game modders seem to try to do too many things and falter. Design the basic hex/hept objects and place them into a functioning tileset. Zip and share with the community.

Well, I don't have any experience making tilesets, but I will make you a tileset with a hex object and a heptagon object tonight, if I have the time.
Besides, I can't texture.........so someone else will have to do that for you.
Title: Re: --Tileset/Map/Scenarios Productions Team--
Post by: Mark on 29 September 2009, 02:16:19
I can make your Heptagon and Hexagon Models.  I assume that they are as tall as a swordman?  Is a color necessary at all?
Title: Re: --Tileset/Map/Scenarios Productions Team--
Post by: Trappin on 29 September 2009, 04:18:51
Thanks for the response.

1) Design heptagon/Hexagon to the relative size and height of the Mossy Rock object.

2) Place the two new hex/hept model objects AND Mossy Rock object into the newly modified Glest default tileset Forest.

Frankly,  I really don't care about the color for testing purposes.

I'd like to see how the hept/hex objects render in-game compared - side by side - to the default mossy rock objects.

  :)

Ive made 2 scenarios already... 5 more to go, and if your asking when im going to release them, they will be released WITH the finished MOON MOD. The only scenario I will post on forums is the third one so stay tuned :D

Also I could texture the models but im not good at it :S Unless you want a recolor, or some chain, pattern texture which are the only things I can do in photoshop (im still new to it) Though maybe not...

See how the mossy rocks align in the screen shot below? The new hex/hept objects will render in the same fashion.

Code: [Select]

Cool! howd you do that? can you do it in normal glest?
Title: Re: --Tileset/Map/Scenarios Productions Team--
Post by: Trappin on 1 October 2009, 01:43:02
The screen shots are from the regular Glest client. Objects will align like this when placed in specific locations.
Title: Re: --Tileset/Map/Scenarios Productions Team--
Post by: ElimiNator on 1 October 2009, 01:47:23
So you can't make like a wall in the midel of the map?
Title: Re: --Tileset/Map/Scenarios Productions Team--
Post by: Trappin on 1 October 2009, 01:52:22
It's possible yes - but takes time fiddling with a map to get the objects to align properly. This is why I need not only the two new hex/hept object but also the mossy rock - this way we can compare how they all behave on the same map and in the same locations.

Anyone have the time to model the hex/hept objects and zip them into into a functioning tileset?

Time, with time I can't be sure but I don't think so because I don't have any Blender stuff installed on my laptop, blender stuff is on my dad's computer.

I could make a map, just like island siege but like a version 2 of it. I find that it could be improved because it is impossible to win against 3 ultra AI's unless the guy in the middle has more resources or that the other 3 AI's have less resources, and a remodification of the map.

archmage i've sent you a pm with the link of island_siege v2. The AI is pretty good and it gives the player a slightly more chance of winning a battle against 3 ultra CPU's then island_siege.

And please update it.

BTW, Moderators, can you sticky this topic?

Actually I was planning on making a scenario that is practically a "CPU Medium" scenario if you get what I am saying.

CPU Medium
Phase: Creation: Still planning
          Testing:  Not yet
          Refining:   Not yet
News: Its going to be cool :P
Title: Re: --Tileset/Map/Scenarios Productions Team--

I assume "CPU Medium" means "Difficulty: Medium".
And, I need a name.

Title: Re: --Tileset/Map/Scenarios Productions Team--
Post by: Scenariole on 18 October 2009, 07:50:25
it will be a scenario called : cpu_medium_1vs1. basically a scenario that uses the magitech faction.
Title: Re: --Tileset/Map/Scenarios Productions Team--

Difficulty level?
Title: Re: --Tileset/Map/Scenarios Productions Team--
Post by: Scenariole on 18 October 2009, 21:07:20
well since I am testing it, and it will be a 1 on 1, right now the difficulty is hard. seeing that cpu normal is medium.

oh with the GMD moon mod, the third scenario/quest is basically a 2 (player/cpu) against 1 (cpu-medium) so yeah once I finish this, I can start on the third scenario/quest for the moon mod.

lol it took you a while to understand :P

difficulty number is 3 which is hard

EDIT: The scenario will basically be a 1 on 1 with me giving certain upgrades early, more production etc in the actual xml so yeah :P
Title: Re: --Tileset/Map/Scenarios Productions Team--
Post by: Omega on 19 October 2009, 23:51:50
You're right. Only two people have been active. Tell you what, give me a solid idea for a SCRIPTED scenario that has a GOOD name (something a bit better than 'CPU Medium' please) and I'll make it. Also, remember that lousy tileset (ancient) I made a LONG time ago (back when I could hardly model)? I'd like to revive and redo it. Cover things in moss, etc and make everything look old and mystic. The kind of thing that goes great with the Path of Nature for FPM!
Title: Re: --Tileset/Map/Scenarios Productions Team--

Yah that would be cool.
Title: Re: --Tileset/Map/Scenarios Productions Team--
Post by: Scenariole on 20 October 2009, 04:43:38
Hmmm I was thinking that:

Dread Swamp...

You would have a battlemachine that must not die or else you lose, a group of guards and archers and swordsmen under your control. the battlemachine will start at base 1 and attack each base circling the map until it gets back to your base where your base will get attacked.

the hard thing is that you must aid the battle machine with your units or else it will get owned. but focusing on that will make your base weak as you need to focus on making units aswell.

kinda weird huh
Title: Re: --Tileset/Map/Scenarios Productions Team--
Post by: -Archmage- on 20 October 2009, 11:23:27
There is an easy solution to that! :D
You simply select Barracks and put it in group 0(CTRL + 0).
Then while you are doing the fighting you can order more troops, and you watch the map for enemies.
Also you want to put your battlemachine in group 1(CTRL + 1) and the other units with him on group 2(CTRL + 2).
Ok so your watching your army and the battlemachine kick the enemies butts, OH SHiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiucks my base is getting attacked(I said shucks not sh*t).
You simply select your Barracks from afar, and beam me up Scottie! No actually just hit the spacebar, but if you want to use the transporters go ahead.

I made the 'king of the hill' scenario, but computer troubles have kept me from testing and debugging it. Once released, it'll be the most commented scenario of all time, great for newbies to learn from too! Of course, I used sucky programming techniques for it, and a lot of things can be improved once timers are released.

I like that battle machine idea. If I make the battle machine an ally unit (similar to how storming does),  then it's impossible to cheat. However, I'd prefer it if there was timers, so that the battle machine would give you three minutes to prepare, then attack, two minute pause, attack next base, so on...

Well you could use a behemoth as a signal... It takes about 30 seconds + to get a behemoth from one base to another, meaning if you want to prepare for 3 mintues make about a behemoth and when it dies make another one and repeat. Also give the player some extra reinforcements too.

Post by: Scenariole on 6 December 2009, 10:19:16
Well since you think your 'good' how about a new members challenge? Prove your skills by making a map:

4 way battle, no 2 bases are put near each other as there are no teams. Make it like a big forest with a waterfall and a walkable lake near the middle of the map.

And to make a waterfall u just get 2 bunches of object 4 on a very high elevated floor level, and in between u place water.

So how about making it?

do you relies how long it took to get this far?
and still not done!
the XMLs take quite a while so I'd say your half done!
Title: Re: --Tileset/Map/Scenarios Productions Team--
Post by: John.d.h on 4 March 2010, 23:09:22
A top-notch model, texture, and animation take several hours to do.  An XML takes maybe five to ten minutes tops.  The only ones that take a long time are particles because you have to test them over and over to make sure they look right, and those still shouldn't take more than 15 minutes to half an hour.

it is the first multiplayer map made for the story mode. its 2v2v2v2, but it is possible to play it 8times 1v1, but the camps will fight very soon.

please put it in the list.archmage!
