I just installed glest on mint 7 gloria, downloaded with synaptic. the game loads but i can't run the tutorial. when i start a scenario, it loads but the controls don't do anything. not getting any error messages though. any suggestions?

According to Wikipedia, Linux Mint uses some Ubuntu repositories. So, i think you have the Ubuntu package of glest, which in fact is an old, broken Debian package (i love the distri jungle). See:

@controls: What exactly is not working? Move mouse, click buttons, keyboard input?

hi, thanks for the reply
the mouse moves but i can't select units.... so the other controls might work actually, but since i can't select units i don't really know. i can pan across the screen with the keyboard.
i followed the link about the tutorial problem to a fixed debian glest data download but am having trouble installing it (just starting using linux mint a few days ago). synaptic gives me an error "breaks existing package" and won't let me install :'( there's probably a way around it but i'm too busy and/or too dumb to figure it out yet

yeah, i haven't checked the dependencies. The glest package in ubuntu depends exactly on the broken data package (great!). Installing the new data package would break glest. You could also replace your glest package with the one in debian sid.
http://packages.debian.org/sid/glest
Make sure to get the right architecture: i386 (32bit), amd64 (64bit)
Should resolve the problem. I can't test it because i have no mint/ubuntu installed.
It's maybe better to wait for a fix from your distribution and not messing around too much with packages from other distributions.
In the meantime you could follow titi's suggestion and install glest with:

If it does not start, see:

@controls: mmhm, that's strange. Are you able to play a normal game, not scenario or tutorial?

i downloaded the file w/ the right architecture, also tried that other download, my system said it couldn't recognize the file type
thanks for trying !
guess i'll have to wait for a fix from mint
about controls: normal game works the same as scenario, it loads but i can't select units
