Update: Added nearly everything above, and included appropriately linked URLs.
Try that...
-
MMORPG:
Atlantica Online (you control multiple characters in turn-based combat, so it's somewhat like the Final Fantasy games)
Music/Media Player:
VLC (the most versatile player I've ever seen, will play just about anything)
J River Media Jukebox
Runes of Magic (high quality WoW-like MMORPG)
Ah, one of my friends got me playing that. Kinda interesting, but gets repetitive pretty quickly (like most MMOs).
-
Talk about repetition, my best friend plays Runescape, and too him it's the best game in the world.
One time I got him into Glest, and he loved it, but he immediately got bored, because all he ever did was...............................WIN THE GAME!!!! He always one by continuously getting archers, over, and over, and over.
He got bored of doing that.
Now you should see what he does with most of his free time: Go on his computer(or school laptop), and play Runescape.
And in Runescape:
Goes to this place where he trains, and gets valuable items, and there's this other place, that I've been to in the game, that he goes to a lot, where there are tons of high level monsters, and tokens you can collect to get money. I never see him anywhere else in Runescape, besides those 2 locations, Grand Exchange, and the Bank, well, at least not for a while.
Kinda interesting, but gets repetitive pretty quickly (like most MMOs).
That's why I don't play Rs much, because it's too tedious.
-
Ah, one of my friends got me playing that. Kinda interesting, but gets repetitive pretty quickly (like most MMOs).
Agreed. I played it for one afternoon and enjoyed it. Came back a few days later when I had more time and just couldn't get into it. I needed more time too, but the fun just wasn't there at the moment. I haven't uninstalled it yet though...
-
Wow, you guys sure have said it all!
Browsers-
Safari, Opera (I use Opera), Firefox (Modman uses that), and Chrome.
-
For browsers, Chrome is supposedly the fastest and it has some cool features. I prefer Firefox, though, b/c it's open source and has tons of extensions that make it highly customizable.
-
Same here.
-
It depends on what I'm doing. Chrome on my computer at home, Firefox at work because we can't install software (I could since the IT guy knows I'm smart enough and gave me admin to my computer, but it would be against policy still).
I really like Chrome myself. It gets the job done, fast and simple.
-
I would like Archmage101 to update his first post, if he has the time...
-
If you want to copy my post for the first post, then just hit quote, copy the needed code and text, cancel your quote reply, edit your first post, and paste over anything you don't want.
We should probably add descriptions, though.
-
I'm bad at describing things, but I'll update the first post a bit.
So if you can describe something, then post it.
-
The first post, really needs to be organized, but I don't have the time.
-
I thought I organized mine well, plus it has everything that the other posts mentioned, and hyperlinks!
I'll update it with descriptions later. Anyones welcome to comment on their since I haven't used some of them.
-
I see that it stripped the URLs... I'll put the code tags around the whole thing once I get descriptions in it so you can copy & paste the straight forum code.
-
Good idea for a topic. I already had most of these things. However, here's my addings:
Audio:
Media Monkey (I use VLC for all short music, but for dances, or playlists, pep rallies, etc I use this awesome software)
Utilities (Windows):
Glary Utilities
VistaGlazz (one time thing, but handy)
Other:
Universal Viewer (ATViewer - Views multiple types of files and has right click for ease of use)
BTW: What's so great about DevC++? I tried it ONCE and I couldn't even compile a hello world program without over 5000 errors. I just can't figure out how to use it. Please add Visual Studio in. It is a very good compiling program.
Also, HOW COULD YOU FORGET SAFARI? While it's not quite as good as firefox since it lacks extensions, it is clearly the second place contenter. It has the most features, best compatibility, and fantastic overall! It is FASTER than FF, and only marginally behind google chrome.
-
I SAID SAFARI! Sorry, but didn't Archmage update it?
-
What do you use, Omega, if you don't use DevC++? I use DevC++, and I like it (although I haven't tested any others).
-
I showed my brother and he mentioned uTorrent needs to be on there as well.
-
Ok, I've added a torrent client section, anyone, want to provide links to those, I'm a bit busy.
-
yeah firefox rulez (i use it)
Best free games eva: Glest and warzone 2100 (altoug the linux version of warzone sucks; at level 12 or so everything is gray, like if the game hasn't been finished yet, like if the ppl forgot to put color in, it looks like blender though)
best paid games: of course guys, you should know, all HALO games, and of course battlefield vietnam (watch out, charlie is behind u) lol
-
This is a topic for FREE stuff, as the title says.
-
Damn you Arch. You got me hooked onto J River Media Player, and now I can't go back to my old one. Grah. One more software I need to familiarize myself with...
-
Oh I see, you got hooked on the "J". :P :D.
Also, why "damn" me, I'm not the one who posted that, I only stuck it on the first post.
-
Yeah, that was me. :)
I've been using it for a long time just because it seems to be a lot less resource-hungry than iTunes or WMP. Unfortunately, it doesn't come with an mp3 encoder in the free version, so I use another program for ripping CDs.
-
Hey, do any of you use Windows Ready Boost?
-
Ok, for now I'm going to quote what people say to get the links.
But in the future, when you post links in a list of recommended software, please send the code to me so I can add the links and all to the first post.
EDIT: Did a serious update to the first post.
Thanks Hectate! :D

I have added an Update Log to the top of the first post, please check it out every time you visit this topic.
I'll put a link to this topic in my signature, maybe others might too.
Also if you go on other forums you could give them links to this topic.
-
Nexuiz:
I really like this 3d-Shooter, really fast and good gameplay(especially multiplayer) feels like a mixture of unreal tournament and quake
It's Opensource has a good community, lots of players and many many maps.
nexuiz - www.nexuiz.com
For the filemanagers: Totalcommander
Its not really free, but you can use the sharewareversion which works complely after clicking a number at every start( its allowed! )
Its the best windows program I know. I use it everyday(at work) and with the plugins you start to think it can do everything! Even without them it's great. It navigates through compressed packages, ftp and web sites and so on so easy you always think you are working on your local harddrive. It has a tool to rename files, simply hitting the spacebar calculates the size of directories and so on.
Totalcommander ( www.ghisler.com )
-
Ok, did you read my last two posts.
Also I need a link to those programs download pages.
Please provide stuff to add to the first post in code so I can just copy and paste.
I'm in the middle of a major update to the first post right now, but if you prepare additions for me then I'll put them in as soon as I see the post.
-
I'm working on UPDATE-7(7th update).
I've redone the "Free Software" title it had under the Update Log. I'm also adding downloads links for each application. So far I've finished the "Audio/Media" Section, and the "Browsers" section.
Please post any links to a download page for one of the applications listed if you can.
It's taking a bit longer than I thought, because some sites don't show you all the available downloads as Firefox is, I had to find the one link out of many on the front page that leads to the complete downloads page.
But I'll soldier along and finally finish with this major update sometime.
Also, if you want to help me update this, I'll PM you the latest code, and tell you what to work on(so we don't end up overlapping each other).
Any Volunteers?

and by the way, please only suggest RECOMMENDED software here, not only any free software you know!
-
Yah I know, I'll take out any that people want me too. Not Randomly, link me to a website or say that it gave you an error.
Thanks Titi!
-
How could anyone forget Sauerbraten (http://www.sauerbraten.org/)?
And as a text editor, binary editor, and programming tool, PSPad (http://www.pspad.com/) is excellent, from what I can tell.

hxxp://ubuntu-tweak.com/
This is especially useful for people like myself who are still fairly new to Ubuntu folder and file permissions (the Nautilus script options), LoL. :) It has a variety of different things that can enhance the way things are set up in Ubuntu, allowing you to access things that are in Ubuntu but hidden from plain sight. From the author's website: http://ubuntu-tweak.com/about

-
I don't think I'll add it too the list, at least not yet.
I don't know much about it, and I've never heard of it.
Also, since it can screw up an operating system I don't see it as recommended.
-
Ok latest news on Update-7:
I'm working on the Games section now. I've completed OpenArena and up, the ones below OpenArena need to be finished.
I'd like to create a small team of people that helped me maintain this:
Team name: undecided
------
Team Members:
"-Archmage-": Team Leader, Maintainer.
------
Jobs:
Team Leader: That's Obvious
Status: TAKEN
---
Maintainer: Someone who maintains (a) section(s) of the first post.
By maintaining I mean:
- They check the links for that section.
- If a broken link is found, they notify me via PM and also send me the correct link.
- Continue searching and make sure the entire section that they were assigned is ok.
- Then check every application/program within that section, and make sure the links are all to the latest versions.
If you take this job, I will expect ~monthly reports of your section, you can also maintain as many sections as you want, but then you have to do that work.
Status: AVAILABLE - NEEDED
---
Finder/checker: Someone who finds new software, and checks around the internet to make sure that it's not malware, or a virus.
Status: AVAILBLE - NEEDED
---
Checker/Recommender: Someone who goes over the list of software, and check about it around the internet, and then recommend it.
To recommend something you simply post that you recommend it, and maybe provide a few links to some good proof.
Status: AVAILABLE - NEEDED
To get a spot on the team please PM me.
EDIT: All team members are asked to put a link to this topic in their signature. This is NOT a requirement.
-
Maintainer: Someone who maintains (a) section(s) of the first post....NEEDED
Hmm, not to be blunt, but maybe you(!) could do it. You said you are on the forums a lot. And besides, it is your topic.
-
If you ask me, this really isn't a big enough issue to warrant a committee. ::)
-
I don't think I'll add it too the list, at least not yet.
I don't know much about it, and I've never heard of it.
Also, since it can screw up an operating system I don't see it as recommended.
I know you are busy, but if you get a chance please check it out. :) When I say it could screw things up, you would have to be the one to change a setting with it to mess something up. It will not do it on its own.
-
Actually, I was just thinking about the possible team, and I think it would be nice to just have maybe one person, maybe two help me keep this updated, and make sure we don't have malware/viruses on our list.
@Mark: I do maintain it but it takes a big chuck of my time.
@sg1efc: Give me the code and I'll add it to the list.
-
Ok, I haven't been updating this at all recently, I'm currently working on fixing the current links up a bit, most of them go to http://Downloads.
-
also nice:
Office/Productivity Software:
Xournal (http://xournal.sourceforge.net/)
Other:
speedcrunch (http://speedcrunch.org/en_US/index.html) (calculator with built-in formulas)
Once I used "FreeOCR.net 2.6" it was/is a nice OCR app with a GUI but maybe there is a better one by now.
Xournal
speedcrunch
-
Thanks for submitting those, I'll add them in soon.
-
I haven't been updating this to much recently, but that will change, I'm going to greatly shorten the list, so I can work with it faster.
-
You should add Konqueror as FTP manager and under file manager.
http://www.kde.org/ (http://www.kde.org/)
It's spectacular at both.
-
I need to finish up what I already have, and remove some stuff.
As far as I know Krusader is the best file-manager for Linux, and for FTP, I have no clue.
-
Audio/Media:
(add)
CamStudio- Screen recorder
:)
-
Please provide a suggestion in the proper format, give me a link to their homepage, and a link to their downloads page.

:P More like weird....
Facebook...has it too.
-
Facebook has it too? Really? Can you post a reference?
It was kinda neat seeing how a low end facial recognition program works. Worked very good for me, even with photos that were years old.

Never mind...
Turns out Facebook doesn't really have it... just photo tagging. For now.
But I think I was thinking about http://face.com/ ...

CONS: It's a large file size, windows only excluding wine, and a long startup time. But the game play can be very fun. and It might be hard to load it since the most latest and final??? release has two or three??? different files.

Wow, thanks Ultifd!
While 3D is tempting, I still love 2D, especially for platformers, puzzle games, and RPGs. All three look great. Haven't tried any yet, but look plenty good.
@Arch: What's wrong with 2D? Sure 3D may look 'better', but there's nothing wrong with 2D. There's plenty of modern games that are in 2D too. Here's a quick pick list:
-Most decent pokemon games
-Final Fantasy 1,2,4,5,6 (a 2D FF 3 never hit North America)
-Mario (the new mario bros, very few 3D mario, only galaxy and 64, not counting racing, puzzle, etc;)
-Legend of zelda on most hand-helds before
-Castlevanias
-Pacman (ok, ok, I hate pacman, bad example).
I think why you dislike 2D is because it reminds you of games like pacman and tetris, at least in their original form.
-
I don't hate 2D games, it's just that they are behind the times, and no where near as fun as a 3D game(in mostly all cases)
You like pokemon??!!?? :o
-

2D is hardly behind the times. That'd be like saying nobody should paint on canvas anymore because now we have computers and 3D art programs.
It has it's place. New mario game has sold to the top of the charts, for instance.
-
Wow, thanks Ultifd!
Welcome. :)
@Arch
2D is as good as 3D... Just depends on what kind the game is...
and even though it's 2010 already... 2d is still nice. :D

Yeah... I really should get it.
-
You like pokemon??!!?? :o
Yeah dude. What's wrong with pokemon? Most people tend to associate them with little kids, but lets face it, little kids are terrible at the game. Every game becomes more and more complex with more and more pokemon requiring more skill and more knowledge. Unlike most RPGs, there's no 'attack'. Everything has four separate moves that must be thought out properly. The wrong move might not do anything, while the right one may one-hit the foe.
I've played since the golden days of blue and red, though my favorite was Gold and Silver because it had the largest world by far (Jonto and Kanto)! Best of all, a remake of Gold and Silver comes to DS this spring.
While I prefer Final Fantasy, pokemon is a great game. Have you even tried it?
-
:o :o :o :o :o :o
Pokemon?!?!?
I played pokemon long ago, the games are not hard. ::)
I stopped playing quite a long time ago, I lost interest because it's a childish game.
If you think little kids are bad at Pokemon, you're quite wrong! :P
I've seen tons of 10- years olds running around with little hand-helds.
I've also met tons of little kids that have beat pokemon multiple times.
I seriously cannot believe you like pokemon, but go ahead, just don't tell me about it.
-
lol at the discussion... :D

Different Versions... Inspired by Geometry Wars... Owner had to pull down the download after BizarreCreations said so... "We're beginning to feel the effects of the Geometry Wars clones on our sales via Microsoft now and are beginning a process to begin to more robustly protect our copyright and intellectual property. Therefore, I'd like to ask you in an amicable fashion to stop infringing our IP and pull the game 'Grid Wars' from the internet for download. I hope you understand and are able to do this
without us having to take further steps."

Grid Wars is fun. I had a good time with that game.
A couple others that people may like (yes, they're 2D).
