Title: Christmas Tileset
Post by: Zoythrus on 7 November 2009, 17:29:06
i was bored, so i made this tileset.  it resembles the Winter tileset (what i based it off of), but there is a feel of festive-ness to it.

It would look better if i could get my hands on new models (like presents or a statue of Santa)

http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?m2hylgm2wwr

this is my first tileset, and i hope you like it

not the greatest quality, but good enough for the upcoming holidays!

Candy canes! Change the dead body objects into candycanes, gold boulders into presents, and the statues into huge nutcracker guard things.

i would, but i cant model...so for any modelers who are bored, can you please make me some Christmasy stuff?
Title: Re: Christmas Tileset
Post by: -Archmage- on 8 November 2009, 03:03:10
I'm bored. I'll model a candy cane, and some presents!

I'll try to texture these, although I've never successfully textured..........anything.

Post by: GlestNewb on 8 November 2009, 03:09:45
PSsh dead bodies fit right into chirstmas. (A christmas faction would be good with this XD)
Title: Re: Christmas Tileset
Post by: Zoythrus on 8 November 2009, 03:24:28
the gold should be red presents with gold/yellow bows and stone should be blue presents with green bows...
Title: Re: Christmas Tileset
Post by: -Archmage- on 8 November 2009, 03:35:36
Zoythrus, I think I'll only try to texture the Candy Cane.
I'll also export itto G3D so you can just stick it right in.

Aww crap, I  don't know if I can texture the Candy Cane, although I will try!
Title: Re: Christmas Tileset
Post by: John.d.h on 8 November 2009, 06:39:21
It might be easier to texture it if you unwrap it as a rectangle, and then bend the model into the shape you want.
Title: Re: Christmas Tileset
Post by: -Archmage- on 8 November 2009, 06:42:59
God, texturing seems to be a pain in the ass, is there any way that I can just color the model, and then save that as a .tga or something, if not, then I will try your unwrapping idea...
Title: Re: Christmas Tileset
Post by: -Archmage- on 8 November 2009, 06:50:27
Actually I'm just going to make the model, someone else can texture them, since they will be very low poly they shouldn't be anything to an experienced texturer.
Code: [Select]

presents(gold) untextured blend file

Post by: -Archmage- on 8 November 2009, 07:44:46
Hey Elim, I just made some very low-poly ones, go ahead and bump the polys up a little(your choice), and texture them.
Title: Re: Christmas Tileset
Post by: Omega on 8 November 2009, 12:08:55
Hmm, I must admit, this could use a bit more work (no offense). Firstly, dead bodies are done in the TECH TREE, not the tileset and no body is going to want to modify that (pain in the ass to change back). Same thing for resources like gold and stone. So what do you plan to do with those models? Statues should be fun though! We can have a nativity scene and a santa, and so on...

Trees should be done with modified evergreen trees instead, or at least make the lights look more realistic. Also, a 'glow' effect to the lights will go a long way. You can make the candy cane's the small stones. Perhaps you can think of other ways to fit the stuff in well.

Uv mapping is easy if you want anyone can pm me a building or tree and uvmap it. I can only map my own human models
Title: Re: Christmas Tileset
Post by: Zoythrus on 8 November 2009, 15:18:51
Omega, keep in mind, that i am a horrible texturer, so that's why the lights look cheesy. and i used the winter forest trees because they have snow on them...

and why cant the gold and stone have different models? the Moon tileset messed with the trees...

As you can see in the pic, I added yellow and gave decorations a simple glow.

The glow is nice, but the lights are pretty huge. Could you make them smaller?

I think they are large, but not too big.

They are actually the same size as the original lights, you're just seeing the strong glow around the light as part of the light. Look at the texture, maybe that will help you see what I'm talking about.
Title: Re: Christmas Tileset
Post by: Omega on 9 November 2009, 15:34:52
The original lights were too big too!

Ok here (http://www.soft-haus.com/jacob/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/c_candy.7z) is the download for a pile of presents and a candy cane (All textured.)

Candy Cane: The texture needs to be improved, have a fade effect between the red and white, and more importantly, the stripes are diagonal, haven't you seen a candy cane...
Title: Re: Christmas Tileset
Post by: Zoythrus on 9 November 2009, 21:42:57
i think the lights are just fine! they look good at that size

I'm going to make another update to this tileset if nobody minds.
Adding in Elims models, after I edit his Candy Cane a little bit. And a few other things.

Edit: Zoythrus, please change the link on your first post to point to the newest version.

Use the winter tileset instead of winter forest since winter has evergreens
Title: Re: Christmas Tileset
Post by: -Archmage- on 14 November 2009, 14:07:58
Yeah, I know, I'm not going to put that much work into this, I've already thought about switching to Winter, but I put a bit of work into those textures.
Lets just stay with this unless someone is willing to kinda morph this tileset.
Title: Re: Christmas Tileset
Post by: Hectate on 14 November 2009, 22:14:52
Couldn't you just make the evergreen models re-skinned like you did with the regular trees, and then add them as one of the models in the christmas set? No need to start over from scratch with the other tileset altogether, just use what you need.
Title: Re: Christmas Tileset
Post by: -Archmage- on 14 November 2009, 23:34:20
Why don't you do that, your not working on any mods, are you?
Title: Re: Christmas Tileset
Post by: Hectate on 15 November 2009, 01:13:33
Mods no, 2 jobs (65 combined hours per week) yes. I get on the forums from my phone, not even a computer really.

In fact Glest isn't even installed right now. I had uninstalled it for more space a while back since I wasn't actively modding. Still got the installs...

Maybe another time.

I like the tileset at the first but it would be cool to see the Santa statues' and the gold/stone to presents and i would think it possible because the moon had funky trees.
and also if someone could help me with it i would like to make a Christmas faction for next year if your interested. :)

Gold could be gethered from presents halfway opened, with gold in them.

like this, but filled with gold.

yes that is kinda what i thought would work so you would have the gold/stone there but in the present.
(i think red for gold w/a gold bow and blue for stone with a silver bow :D)

COOL!!!!! i thought from how i read it it was closed boxes and diff colors and if someone could get me the tools i could try to help make the boxes.
(the reason i thought of red and blue is it is the first 2 colors in Glest :))
Title: Re: Christmas Tileset
Post by: Omega on 9 December 2010, 03:22:46
Er, again, my reply to when that was first thought of in this very thread:

You cannot change resources in the tileset!

Resources are a techtree object, since every techtree uses its own resources. Thus, having a tileset to change the resources is not possible.

ok then how about someone tell me how to change the g3d and i will fix it so there is a megapack that has the stone and gold with presents on them. >:(

Title: Re: Christmas Tileset

well, if the presents are still wrapped (as in, not open), then they can be whatever we want them to be. so they can be gold and stone, or whatever the objects are...

You'd have to replace gold.g3d and stone.g3d in their respective folders in the resources folder of the megapack. But, that's a fairly permanent change, and means all megaglest factions will see those presents on any map and any tileset. Also, I think your "!" key is stuck...
