Readme Notes: this is a map that a "Spectator" can use to watch two computers fight out a good battle! The main purpose of this is to check/evaluate the balance between two factions. See full readme notes in the download package.

All new map submissions will be added to the compendium. No special formatting is required. New map submissions must include a download link and should include a Glest Map Editor or Glest Advanced Engine 3D thumbnail sized screenshot.

My job is finished. Glest.org moderators become the sole custodians of the newly created repositories and control the intellectual content. heh.  :P

Indeed, omegas site already exsists and has a rating system, but his site is external and prorietary. So only omega can change its content. The best place for such a map compendium is the Wiki! Everyone can add and edit there and we hopefully get a good result. The forum is ok too, but a forum is not really made for this. Maybe we get our own website one day ( with community access )then we could host things like this there too. For now its only some changing information that we want to provide and thats what a Wiki was made for.

I started something in the Wiki, what do you think?

random thoughts-

The Glest forum(s) already suffer from "sticky bloat" and adding the compendium post to the list just increases the bloat.

Even if we build the repository there is no guarantee that the free data access model at MediaFire and Photobucket won't change. IE: Kodak free image hosting switched to a subscription model.

Solution: Locate a wealthy benefactor or government/private organization dedicated to hosting long-term open source web projects.

In theory, the wiki would be best, but I don't think many people use it, or even know it exists or how to get there.

Yea, I've never looked at the wikia much, and besides it's got lots of outdated info, which means it's just one more thing we would have to keep up to date, where as the forum is where the stuff is posted so naturally the forum's perfectly up to date.
I think all databases, and repositories, should be on the forums.

Are you suggesting we shouldn't use it because we don't use it even though we should use it?

There's lots of outdated info on the forums too. It just means it's harder for people to improve the existing information. I think the forums are the place for discussion and the wikia should be for information.

The problems with using another tool is finding hosting and who will be in charge. A wikia is decentralized from any particular user and already exists. I'm not opposed to a better/different solution but until then there is no harm in using the wikia.

Well, said.  A wiki is perfect for this purpose, if you dont think it's good enough, make it better!

I think we should just have some databases of the mods, of the tilesets, of the maps, all that stuff, some of those have already been done!
I'll take a quick look at that site.

Edit: Don't have time to read it right now, mom wants me to go to bed. But I'll be interested to see how it comes out, if we do end up using it!

I would suggest to use the existing possibilities for now! Everyone always wants to make things new, better and different!  But we currently have some working possibilities:

1. the forum
2. the wiki
3. sourceforge

Mods/tools/infos are currently hosted at:
- moddb.com
- proprietary sites like http://www.titusgames.de,
Code: [Select]
http://www.nihilirian.com/ or
Code: [Select]
http://glest.110mb.com- any kind of free upload services like mediafire, filefront or whatever

The most realistic way of providing/organizing information about where to get what currently is the wiki.
No Admin is needed to edit the stuff because everyone who makes something can edit it.
If we proof that we can handle this we can think about something better one day!

Wow, a year + a month + 3 days has past...
Anyways, perhaps the glest maps wiki should start using tables...

Noo... I'm going to be outright blunt. Making the Glest Maps Wiki was a bad idea. The community is far too small for another wiki, and I originally planned to merge all data from the Glest Maps Wiki, but decided instead it has too many issues and would be easier to just remake it from the remains of the existing map pages. The Map page is the current target for a major revision...

Glestmaps ranks #2 #1 on North America non-region google proxy search pages which translates to increased map and tileset downloads during the same period - woohoo! Tracking shows hits from all over the globe but huge net increases from Eastern Europe, Russia and Southeast Asia.

Still a copy of the Glest Wiki. I don't mean to be blunt, but I'm not sure why you made another wiki when one already exists...

The current glest wiki page is an outdated copy of my work from this thread. Whats your point? That I'm stealing my own work or that I need your approval before working on a Glest fan site?

Oh, no, there is no point. I just think that we should work together on one, unified project. Abet, I've already started redoing the map pages to fit the standard of the other pages...
