Title: Sir Modman's Glest Artwork
Post by: modman on 20 February 2010, 03:58:04
Gimp > Photoshop
I made some icons a while back in the GIMP, so I thought I should share them with y'all.  There should be three:

Code: [Select]

If you don't see three, click the quote button and snag the URL of the image it should be showing you.  You can download the image (it's in *.png format) this way as well.

EDIT: New icons are available.  I changed these two so they would scale down to 32x32 better.

EDIT: I was feeling inspired so I made some splash screens.  Hopefully Facebook allows hotlinking.

Great work Sir,

I was gonna make some icons for glest files myself, but these are much better than I could have done  ;)

I used the GIMP, and the "flame" tool there.  There are other tricks I won't delve into here, too.

I guess I just wanted some higher-res icons I could use instead of the ugly, generic one Windows makes me use otherwise for the g3d viewer and map editor.  The Glest icon was not high-res enough.

I have a lot more work in the Gimp, it's just that this is the only Glest-related stuff.

Alright, I know it has been more then 90 days...but since now Modman you are out of school, another thing you could do, besides working on DM, is edit these icons, as a lot of people have said, there is a problem with resizing them...  ::)
We only used the Glest 'G' icon though, the 'g3d' and 'map' ones I would love to use too, but as titi pointed out, they don't scale so well (even just down to 32x32).
I like them , but they are useless because they look really bad when you resize them to the needed size. the original icon has a size of 48x48.
If you use it in the taskbar where its only shown in 16x16 ( I think)  it just look slike a green spot :/ . We need something different.
Thanks...

Yeah, they look great, but too bad...since you resize them...  ::)
I mean, if you still have the "base" image for it.  ::)

Idea, just use "m" for map and "3D" for g3d

Yeah, I could see why, but that would mean he would have to alter the whole image again...or layer I guess.
But yeah, I could see why.

Sorry to bump this topic, but I will be making new icons.  I will not only be taking Gabbe's suggestion to make the Map icon an 'M' in the front and the G3D icon into '3d', but if you ask, I'll give you the Gimp *.xcf files.

I will also be making some icons for the map editor.  Any suggestions of how the map editor icons should look?

what will they be for? GAE, MG, ect.

I guess I was rather cryptic in my post.  I will be making new icons which are 32x32 for the latest version of the map editor.

I was thinking of making them look like iTouch app icons.  Basically, they are rounded squares lit from the top.  Very simple.

I made some new icons.  The first post is updated.

Looks awesome!
Thanks, now the GAE team will have problems scaling it down...
For the megaglest icons, unless softcoder or titi wants to change them, they are fine.

About the map editor icons, I think I'm going to push myself away from that.  I'll pick it up later, maybe, but don't expect anything soon.  The only Glest project I need to be doing is Dark Magic (which I am uploading now).

EDIT: And thanks to utifd, -Archmage-, wciow, Gabbe, Wyvern, Omega and softcoder in that order for the compliments :).

Sir Modman, your icons look very good. Nice job.

Alright, that's fine. Just, I guess, don't forget about it...?

Hmm, by the look of it, I think if titi was here, and he will be soon, he would say your icons are awesome...which he did, but the scaling...well that's fixed.

Splash screens!  Titi, softcoder, or anyone on the GAE team, if you want to use the images you are free to do so.  No offense anyone, I just thought I might try my hand at the splashes, and I am personally very satisfied.

I might change them later to be on a black background; you can see the light streaks better then.

EDIT: There we go; FB apparently kills the transparency.  Now you can see the streaks better because I used imageshack.

I see Gabbe used it, I guess  that is OK. too bad it does not look too good as an avatar. I think.

I don't mind him using it (although I'm not so sure I would) but I think that more people here should try to learn "tricks" in Gimp.  Making those light streaks is incredibly easy:

I would mute the sound though.

Cool.  I know GIMP has some vector capabilities, but I haven't really explored them.

BTW, the music threw me off for a second because I have the same song in my collection.  "Wait a sec, I just turned off my media player... OHH, it's the video!" :O

Very nice indeed! Any chance you could do the Glest 'G' in similar fashion (transparent bg) ? And, could we have the xcf files ? I assume the background and letters are on separate layers, in which case for very small (16x16) icons we can just ditch the text completely, and make proper icons that will look good at any common size.

Again, very nice work, Sir.

Here's an icon for your GAM, if you're still working on that.

Sweet, thanks dude!

As to the GAM, it hasn't been worked on in some time, but I do have most of the Glest shared library ported to C#, so it may get an update one day... Nice incentive having such a spiffy icon ready to go :)

Thanks again, great work.

No problem.  I kind of wanted to do it because I thought of the gear thing as I was going to sleep.  I think of a lot of good ideas then.
