Title: Glest for girls
Post by: Ale on 1 September 2010, 20:34:01
hi!
I am organizing mini lan parties for children between 7 and 9 years.
For boys Glest in normal distribution is cool.
But now I want to explore the posibility to make girls play the game.
Is there any mod/tileset/??? that can be used as a good choise for girls?
Something like fairy world, or barbie, etc...

And another question is if we can make a mod that change normal behaviour of weapons, I am thinking in an scenario where a boy use Tech and a girl use Tinker world, and when a tinker attacks a tech worker becomes dizzy.. and after long exposure it dissapear.

thanks in advance,
Ale.

No, this is not possible for Mega-glest or normal glest  right now. (Although it might be in GAE)

there is a bunny mod (Not very good models) thats all I can think of.

6.If you're not agree read number 5 again.:D

Hi, right now I think the bunny mod would be good... Maybe the city mod too? Or if someone made a mod... Good idea.

Sigh*... stereotypes.

That's good.  We currently have very few female players, or at least very few who are active on the forum. :-[

The closest thing I can think of that's currently playable is a garden mod (https://forum.megaglest.org/index.php?topic=5229.msg58129#msg58129), which includes plants, mushrooms, and other stuff.  I haven't actually played it, but I've seen screens of it, and the mushroom faction seems like something you might like to use.

Yes, you can do that in Glest Advanced Engine using the <effects> tag.  It's really easy.  For example, you could have the target get slowed down, or be unable to move/attack for a little while.  In the next version of GAE (coming very soon), you'll be able to add particles to the effects, so you could also make the target sparkle and/or glow.  I think you'll be able to use sounds for them as well, so maybe when the target gets hit with fairy dust, he can't move or attack, he sparkles a little bit, and snores! ;D

You're welcome.

I don't see why girls wouldn't like normal Glest.
Honestly, I find people who raise their daughters to love SUNSHINE AND BUNNIES AND PINK AND BUBBLEGUM to be extremely annoying.

we should just make a Pink faction...just for girls. it might improve the amount of female players.

Personally, I see no reason that the original Magitech techtree couldn't be played by girls. The way I see it, pink is indeed a stereotype, and I've seen girls, even ones as young as 8, that like swords, etc; Most of the girls that like pink and barbies generally like them because it's what is "expected" of them, thanks mostly to stereotypes. Having them try some new things isn't necessarily a bad idea, and Glest is largly appropriant for all ages, since it has no blood and very minimal violence.

well you could always try to make a faction were instead of swordsmen there would be swordsisters like in my amazon mod, but idk...

i was kidding about the whole pink thing, i said it cuz it's a stereotype.

although, a "girly" revamp of the tech would be interesting...

Yes, I agree. Although sometimes there are...a bit of blood every now and then.
But sure, a Fairy World or etc are still good ideas.

Why not just add some female warriors to one of the normal factions?  Even I would enjoy that.  (Make them hot though.  LOL)

1.) It probably would unbalance the factions...
2.) That won't make a difference to the idea of playing Glest...I think that is what we're talking about.
3.) You want "hot", I don't think Glest is for that... a lot of other stuff is already out there for people who want hot, I guess.

why for girls?
Why not?

There are girls in lots of other factions (Most of Titi's (Mega-pack) and mine (Vbros-packs).

I'm planning several female units for the project I'm working on, but it'll be a while. :-[

why for girls?
It's a huge demographic in which we're lacking.  If you only target a male audience, you alienate over three billion people right off the bat.

Most girls wouldn't play it anyway, one of my sisters has played it though. Most girls don't like violence so they wouldn't play this game even if it had female units characters etc.

Considering the number of girls and young women I know who play Halo and Call of Duty, I'm inclined to disagree.

Oh yeah, that's true.
Most girls don't like violence
That is a stereotype...and glest doesn't even have a lot of violence. Most people don't even think about it since they spam units...etc
