Title: Hello again and my flash game!
Post by: Hectate on 19 October 2010, 18:12:38
Hey guys, it's been a while since I've done anything with Glest, but I always like to stop by here and see what's going on. Plus, I recently created a game for a small (internal to Stencyl's closed beta) game jam and won! Yay me! Anyway, I thought with everyone here being like-minded creative people that enjoy diversions like this that you'd like to give it a play and give me some feedback. Enjoy!

Sorry but I removed the game for the time being. I'll re-release an updated version in the future. Thanks for all the feedback everyone!

Welcome back!
"Dreamingbig": Kinda fun, although in the 2nd level this cyan thing made it hard to go on...

Pretty cool game!

How'd you make it?

Would be more fun if there was a points system though (better colored things = more points).

Good to be around! :)

I'm not sure what you mean ultifd, I assume you mean the water? A few of the players have complained that they were able to progress past various levels. I believe what is happening is that occasionally one of the colored Peeps (as I call them) manages to fall outside of the game boundaries - making it impossible to eat the needed number and progress to the next level. The water wouldn't be the cause of that, it's purely a visual element. I'd recommend restarting the game (a level-restart feature is easy and on my TODO list).

Omega: Points tracking and other similar related elements (such as HUD) are future features. They weren't vital for the contest so I left them out due to the time constraints. As far as making it goes, I used Stencyl (http://www.stencyl.com/). It's a fairly impressive piece of game creation software. It's currently in closed beta but will be going to open beta at some not-too-far-away point in time. If you (or anyone else here) is interested in working with it and serious about making Flash-based games (even as a hobby, such as me) I can recommend beta testers for the closed beta. Jon, the founder/creator, definitely wants to have more creative and skilled people putting it through it's paces before the open beta.
Have a look around the website at some of the other games that people have made out of it and it's features. I CAN tell you that it's simplified the process of creating Flash games GREATLY. I was teaching myself to code in ActionScript 3 using the Flixel library - this is much better.

Oh, that was water...
I don't know, but I think it just kinda "blocked" the gameplay...I mean since it is "solid", not transparent, it kinda blocked me from seeing the "Peeps". Maybe in the future the water could be a bit more improved or transparent? Thanks...
I guess I'll try your game again tomorrow, hopefully when I have the time...

I tried to make it shallow enough that I wouldn't have to use transparency and incur a rendering penalty to the framerate. I'll add it to my TODO list as something to look into. I never considered that it might not be obvious as water. Wave shapes might be a good start I suppose. The artwork all around was a bit... hurried along for the contest deadline. :O

Hey guys - it's been quite a few months since I've been around, but I remembered how much everyone likes to make games here and thought I'd pass along a note.

The game creator, StencylWorks (http://www.stencyl.com), I used to make the above mentioned game, as well as another I think I mentioned before (Hamsterball Golf (http://www.kongregate.com/games/dotHectate/hamsterball-golf)), is now available to the public - free! You can find me on the forums there - as a private beta tester I'm usually answering questions as part of the informal support team. Maybe I'll see some of you there, be sure to say hi. Cheers everyone!
