Im starting a server for a game called "Minecraft" and i want to compare prices. I dont need a dedicated server, just a VPS. It must have 4GB RAM preferably more. Quad core processor, preferably intel Xeon. And it must have a good connection with low ping, preferably 100Mbit. It must also be located somewere in north/west Europe. No russian or greek server. They block some IPs.
Im looking for prices varying 50-200 USD.

A dedicated server? ... I heard cheating in that game was bad, but...
No, seriously, what are you doing?!
-
:O
Im running the server at home for now, but that lags insanely much, bad connection -_-
Im looking for hosts for my server for minecraft, but i can`t find any good..
-
You mean if I let you borrow my desktop(once it's fully operational), you'd pay me money?! :cheesy:
-
100mbit line, yeah your good to go! :D
-
I would let you host a server when I'm not using it myself, but again I have to get it working properly. :P
-
so you posses a 100Mbit line? o.O
-
download speed is about 600kb/s, is that fast enough :P :P
-
For a game that requires you to send atleast 10Mbit for new players everytime one joins, wich can occur at multiple occasions, handle players speaking simultaneously coded on some sh!tty one time engine and at the same time render the map for each player, also do physics for the other players and then transmit those + that the game itself requires a lot of RAM. That equals more than 4GB. About 20-40 people online. idk..

Try to contact Phoenix, he's got alienware. :|
I might get the computer up to 5GB of ram, we'll see how things go.
-
no dude, my computer can handle it perfectly, but i cant have it on 24/7 nor do i have the internet capacity. Thats why I have to rent.
But now i found something here:
http://iweb.com/dedicated/smart-servers/
and the stuff solves itself out...

You can get a good VPS for decent price from TheWebPole.com (http://www.thewebpole.com/) .For your budget you can get a dedicated server.Anyway,In thewebpole many VPS hosting plans are available, choose a VPS that satisfy your requirements. Also check out their Dedicated servers .They are excellent in service and support. They have United States, European and Asia-Pacific data centers .

Being looking at your replies for a bit, mate. You realize many of the topics you've posted in are months or even years old?

If one were to contact potential hosting companies that would allow MG to run dedicated on their server, what would be good questions to ask?
Does anybody already know off-hand of companies in the US - or elsewhere in the world - that handle this type of set up well? More servers will be needed as players increase. It would be convenient to have some extra info on the subject.

Oh, there's plenty. I use DigitalOcean for my cheapo VPS. $5 a month for a not-great-but-not-horrible machine. Never tried it with MG, though, and the memory and CPU of the lowest tier are probably too low for MG. The $10/mo tier might be enough, but it's hard to say if the processing power is sufficient. The MG documentation strongly recommends multi-core and I can't say just how important that is (CPUs are really hard to put to a number, and VPSes especially so -- I mean, "1 core" doesn't exactly mean much).
You can get cheaper, though. I mostly went with DigitalOcean due to free credit from the GitHub student package, and I really liked their documentation for setting up a variety of common software (eg, to setup Postgres).
I've heard a lot about Amazon EC2, but never used it and can't say for sure if MG would work there. Don't see why it wouldn't. I have more experience with Microsoft Azure (can't say if I'd recommend that; had plenty of frustration in working with the poorly documented management API -- but you wouldn't need to use that, nor would most people, I would think). Anyway, I can't tell exactly what the EC2 instance is compared to Azure. MG provided wouldn't run in an Azure App (they're too limited with the control provided), and thus would need an Azure VM (which is a VPS).
