They do offer an option to report packages which an upgraded version is available for, though. And anyone can use this option, including you. Just head to https://launchpad.net/getdeb.net/+filebug and create a new bug report with a subject of '[please update] MegaGlest x.y.z' (where 'x.y.z' is the newly released version number), and report that a new version is available and it the existing MegaGlest packages need upgading. The playdeb people will usually take on it within a few days (at least that's how it was for the last three releases) and they are just volunteers, too (so a few days is actually pretty good response time).
So any volunteers to report the update?  :)

Very good release so far!
No known problems yet, beside my misunderstanding of the windows update process ( sorry for that softcoder ).

By the way. I think we need a little break now, too much megaglest lately ...

First of all, I'd like to thank you for providing mirrors and 7zip versions. Those are of great help. Other than that, I got nothing to say. Looks great, though the download gets bigger every time :(, stretching even the school's internet to the limit.

Playdeb (http://www.playdeb.net/updates/ubuntu/10.10/?q=megaglest) is now updated with the latest!

i just wonder why it's only for ubuntu 10.10. i have 10.04 installed and he won't install because of the following missing dependencies:

megaglest:
 libwxbase2.8-0 (>= 2.8.11.0) installed 2.8.10.1-0ubuntu1.2
 libwxgtk2.8-0 (>= 2.8.11.0) installed 2.8.10.1-0ubuntu1.2

is that reasonable, because 3.4.0 runs with those lib-versions on my 10.04 ?

Looks like the maintainer only created packages for the latest release of Ubuntu.  I guess you'll have to use the linux install package found in this thread.

cnet.com says they have 117 downloads of glest per week:
http://download.cnet.com/Glest/3000-7483_4-10421123.html

someone should upload MG it there too, but they sound like only the developers are allowed to:

Yes I've asked softcoder and titi before. Glest is the only 5 star free rts listed there too.
Looks like they are not going to apply though...titi doesn't want to yet because there might be bugs, and I guess softcoder doesn't want to because of his experience with a semi-similar site, Tucows.
and I suppose tomreyn wouldn't want to do it because CNET is also a shareware site too.

I don't particularly dislike shareware sites, but I dislike sites which require you to enter in a contractual agreement just to have them redistribute your free software. And even more so, when these contracts state something like this:
Quote
You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your login names and passwords and you accept responsibility for all activities, charges, and damages that occur under your account.
I.e., if your account gets taken over and someone does anything malicious with it, then you can be fully held accountable for it.

You understand and agree that our Services may include communications such as service announcements and administrative messages from us or from our partners and that these communications are considered part of the Services. You will not be able to opt out of receiving these messages. You also understand that our Services may include advertisements.
I.e., they and their partners can spam you as much as they like, no way to opt-out of this if you want to keep your account.

I like sites like download.com though. I've had an account there for years, and never had any problems. I've never received ads ever, and the only emails I get from them is the ones letting you know that something you downloaded has a new version out (and this is optional, but I like it). Sure, the shareware aspect can be annoying (particularily when you find the perfect program that you really need, but find out it's just a trial, as well as some programs that lie in about the information they give download.com, such as claiming to be freeware when it's really adware/shareware, though I don't blame download.com for that, it's not their fault. Overally, I think both our forks should appear there. It could really boost downloads and the community (be sure to get some good screen shots!).

Well I think if you just sign up for download.com, you don't get any spam...for upload.com they send you those product e-mails which you can just unsubscribe...not sure if you ask the first time though. I'm not sure, I signed up a long time ago... maybe this

This issue can be tracked on Launchpad (https://bugs.launchpad.net/getdeb.net/+bug/714288).
What happened is that the playdeb package maintainer unfortunately assumed our latest releases would always be distributed via sourceforge.net (which usually is the case, but wasn't for 3.4.0 release, at least not during the first few days, due to the security incident at sourceforge). So while our release announcements pointed to the megaglest.org download mirror, he downloaded the source package of sourceforge which was misleadingly tagged as "current release" there (but it was not possible to update things on sourceforge at the time). Just bad luck. I hope/wish the playdeb team will be able to provide us with new packages which will be compatible to the 3.4.0 release. The bug tracker should tell how this advances.

Edit:
Actually this was our mistake. Thanks a lot to c_korn of playdeb for debugging this issue with us.
Title: Correction to v3.4.0 "Full data package", Ubuntu/Debian "megaglest-data" package
Post by: tomreyn on 10 February 2011, 15:18:13
Quote
Hi,

we had a mishap while packaging the "Full data package" for 3.4.0,
resulting in outdated data being contained in this package. Only very
few of you will have downloaded this package, so if you do not know what
this is about you can safely ignore this e-mail in its entirety.

SCOPE

Who is affected:

* Whoever downloaded the "full data package", a file named
  "megaglest-data-3.4.0.7z", and used this to install

* Users of the Debian packages provided by playdeb.net and getdeb.net
and any of their mirrors:
  Package: megaglest-data
  Version: 3.4.0-1~getdeb1

Who is _not_ affected:

* Anyone who used a 3.4.0 full installer, namely:
  * Windows Installer (MegaGlest-Installer-3.4.0_i386_win32.exe)
  * Linux 32-bit Installer (MegaGlest-Installer-3.4.0_i386_linux.run)
  * Linux 64-bit Installer (MegaGlest-Installer-3.4.0_i386_64_linux.run)

* Anyone who upgraded from 3.3.7.2 using any supported means, namely:
  * Upgrade Data package (megaglest-data-updates-3.4.0.7z)
  * Windows Auto Updater (MegaGlest-Updater-3.4.0_i386_win32.exe)
  * Windows Self Extracting Update (megaglest3.4.0_i386_win32_bin.exe)
  * Windows 7-zip upgrade archive (megaglest3.4.0_i386_win32_bin.7z)

* Users of any newer versions of the "megaglest-data" Debian package
provided by playdeb.net and getdeb.net

IMPACT

If you installed 3.4.0 using any of the affected packages, your game is
incompatible to that of players who installed by other means. Whenever
you play a network game which in which any player plays the romans_beta
faction (which may also be randomly selected) you will receive an error
message about your game being incompatible and you will get disconnected
off the server. If you are running the server, all clients who installed
by other means will be disconnected.
This also means that your setup is not supported in the future.

MITIGATION

A mitigation strategy for users of playdeb.net packages is not available.

If you setup the game using the "full data package"
(megaglest-data-3.4.0.7z), as provided by the MegaGlest project, you can
do the following to be able to play online:

* open a file browser

* browse to the MegaGlest main directory. This directory should bear the
following subdirectories:
bin/
data/
docs/
lib/
maps/
mydata/
scenarios/
screens/
techs/
tilesets/
tutorials/
It should also contain several *.ini files.

FIX

For users of the "Full data package", we have released a fixed variant
(megaglest-fixed_data-3.4.0.7z) which is available at

https://forum.megaglest.org/index.php?topic=6506.msg66501#msg66501
(use a web browser which supports Javascript and expand the "spoiler")

The direct download location is
http://sourceforge.net/projects/megaglest/files/current_release/megaglest-fixed_data-3.4.0.7z/download

The file size is about 189.3 MB.

Checksums:
SHA1 32439e2225365f27f15b6ce4726d50d844680cc8
MD5  830c418abc96a2ec8b5bc6210b17440e

You may use the fixed data package and a previously downloaded binary
package to setup MegaGlest 3.4.0 from scratch, as you would have done
previously.

Users of playdeb.net packages should upgrade to a newer megaglest-data
package which should become available on your preferred playdeb.net
mirror server and at

http://www.playdeb.net/updates/ubuntu/10.10/?q=megaglest

shortly. Please note that we do not maintain these packages ourselves,
so we cannot provide nor influence their ETA.

THANKS

We would like to thank c_korn of playdeb.net for the hours he spent with
us on determining the cause of this issue, and for providing the recent
and upcoming MegaGlest Debian packages.
