There were some proposal about glest's user interface in japanese glest thread in 2ch.
I thought they are interesting so I translate them in here. I'm sorry if they are already proposed in past.

It would be good if unit's mini HP bar was showed except their HP is full.
It would be good if units are promoted, some kind of Star marks showed on the level-up unit.
It would be good selected units emphasised in the minimap.
I will post same proposal in MegaGlest-feature request board.

I think the first two suggestions are good, and maybe they were suggested before too. The 3rd one might be a problem. Eventually we'll have stacked units or whatever, so what if you select 100 units... :P Wouldn't look too good.
Anyways, good suggestions. Hopefully they'll be implemented after the merge or maybe even during the later part of the merge.

Certainly agree with the second suggestion. Currently unit levels are stats/name only with no way to visually distinguish promoted units. I think it would be best to place a billboard/particle on the unit to show its current level (if promoted).

Support provided the mod can change the icon and it's just one, let's say 32x32 icon (enough space to say, use a modern military rank symbol).
