Abrams is what it looks like, it can't be british because of the big bulge over the gun, and russian turrets look like an inverted frying pan, The Leopard II looks more futuristic and its not as flat as a merkava, whch leaves the leopard I and the Abrams unless its an experimental, I guess the abrams, I might have it wrong though, not too great with modern vehicles

Wyvern is close with M1 Abrams but no cigar. Still open.

Hint: it's American, it's a prototype that lost a competition for a big government order. It's from 1970s.

This gusoku armor was equipped by the famous Darthvader Daimyo.
Question: Who was the owner of this armor?
Title: Re: military equipment quiz

It's either Darth Vadar or Date Masamune
Title: Re: military equipment quiz
Post by: Hagekura on 28 July 2011, 22:12:47
Congrats! yeah it's date masamune's famous 黒漆塗五枚胴具足(Black lacquered five plates body gusoku).  The helm's crescent frontal plate is remarkably large!

Ok, ok, I'm done joking. I'll be serious. I do believe that is the HMS Vanguard (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Vanguard_%2823%29).

And here's another attempt at honesty, guess this one:

Weird hat with red bit looks like Tokugawa, so guess Tokugawa Ieyasu? Isn't it missing the leaf design on the helmet?
Good guess! Yeah it's Tycoon Ieyasu's 大黒頭形兜伊予札黒糸威胴丸具足(Big black Zunari kabuto and Iyozane black string odosi Domaru Gusoku).
As you know, the helm had the frontal plate which symbolized 歯朶(Shida=Fern) leaf, so this gusoku also called 歯朶具足(Shida Gusoku). now the shida plate is detached from helm and preserved separately.
Ieyasu equipped this gusoku in Battle of Sekigahara and Osaka, in both battle he achieved glorious victory.
so the armor became a Good luck symbol of Tokugawa family. Successive shoguns of Tokugawa shogunate replicate this armor and it is said that there were 19 replicas of the armor had been made.

Sorry, haven't checked on this topic for the past week, that would be a IAR 317, a development of the french alouette III, or IAR 316 in Romanian service, it was meant to be a close air support version

hmn I suppose it's Rapier and Dagger.
Title: Re: military equipment quiz
Post by: John.d.h on 8 August 2011, 20:51:45
It's said to be a descendant of the rapier, but that's not quite it.  The defining characteristic is the varying thickness of the blade.
Title: Re: military equipment quiz
Post by: wyvern on 9 August 2011, 15:31:17
the little thing has to be a dagger or a sword breaker, the big thing is a small sword by my guess, if I'm right, anyone can go instead of me, I couldn't get the thing I wanted to show to work so... :-[
Title: Re: military equipment quiz
Post by: John.d.h on 9 August 2011, 16:45:39
I don't really care about the dagger.  I just couldn't find a good picture of this sword without it. :O

The small sword (I believe) came later, and the rapier came much earlier.  I'm not sure exactly how long this weapon was in use, but George Washington had one in his impressive arsenal of swords.  The important thing to look at is how the blade suddenly transitions from fat to skinny.

PS -- If nobody gets it, I guess I'll try a new one tomorrow?

He has the legend that he ride across the Lake Biwa, later 明智左馬助湖水渡り(Akechi samanosuke ride across the lake water) became favored theme of Ukiyo-e artists.

OT:
What is the strongest tank?
well there are a lot if contenders today.

M1 Abrams and Challenger 2 are definitely contenders, as are leopard 2 and maverka 4.

Some people will say russian T90 but I think it's hard to argue although some Russian tank tech is very cool. Russia also built the better T95 but that's only a prototype. China and Ukraine have good tanks but hard to say strongest

But real contenders should also include latest south Korean and Japanese tanks which are more technologically advanced
Title: Re: military equipment quiz

How about french Leclerc? it has 52 calibres 120mm smoothbore gun with autoloader and ceramics modular armour, also has high-tech Datalink system. very cool tank.

Well, (south)korean tanks are laughingstock. merely a patchwork of other country's tanks.

I wish we could have an excellent tank. money is the biggest obstacle.
Japanese military budget is decreasing year by year, while China continues military expansion... :(
for the time being, we have to continue using aging Type74. :O Type90 is few.

Leclerc is impressive, agree it's a contender.

South Korean tanks aren't a laughing stock, why do you say that? The K-1A2 is pretty impressive and the K-2 is really a contender I would have thought.

The Japanese Type-10 (TK-X) is up there too I think

Merkava, without a doubt, most of the western tanks are older then the merkava.
If its not just modern tanks, Comet or IS-2 ;D

I'm not sure that the merkava is so far ahead. It's got merits but it's not that much newer, certainly not a generation gap IMO. Although it's classified, armor is probably less than Abrams and challenger although you could argue re distribution of armor and internal layouts.

The longest ranged tank-tank kill was by a British challenger at over 4km.

Merkava has operational gun launched missiles with ranges similar to Russian ones at around 9km in theory but any could have if the operator choose to.

Jordan's challenger 1 with falcon turret would be another contender if that ever became operational.

true, but the longest kill doesn't give you longest range since most fights happen at 2-3km or less in modern combat+the merkava is a lot better looking then other tanks
