Title: If you had the choice to take down the cause of your demise, would you do it?
Post by: Omega on 22 January 2013, 01:22:51
Just an off-topic discussion. In particular, I'm referring to the UK's letters of last resort (Wikipedia link (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Letters_of_last_resort) if you're unfamiliar with them). Basically, you're in charge of a country (etc) and have the option of (at least attempting) to get revenge on whomever may destroy your country. If you were killed and your country destroyed, would you prefer to (attempt to) bring down those who caused your demise? No one would know of your choice unless it was ever executed. It's like pulling the trigger on your own killers.

If it was your choice, would you do it?

EDIT: A similar example of this capability was the Soviet era "Dead Hand (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dead_Hand_(nuclear_war))". However, it differs in that it's not kept secret, as is the choice given in the UK's letters of last resort. The intent of the Dead Hand was as a nuclear deterrence and for revenge.

You mean like if you die a nuke automatically launches at your enemies?

Pretty much, yeah. You have the choice of whether or not that nuke will launch.

It is almost impossible to say what one would do in such a situation. Still, bearing in mind the poor job we, Humanity, have done developing and organizing this world of ours, I think that I would press the button of Armageddon without many qualms.
