I think we should remove hint 42, which reads Linux is the best operating system.. ever.. period :). Why? Because it's stupid and childish. Never mind the incorrect ellipses or the childish smiley face, MegaGlest is cross-platform. Obviously there's a big Linux following here, and that's great. Free and open source software is also great. But this is just ridiculous.
Why don't we also add a hint that says "White, German, blonde-haired, blue eyed humans are the best people.. ever.. period :)"?

1. This is no feature request i think
2. tomreyn just added those hints. I think the following are also no quick tips... they are hints for modders or something:
-hint25=Join the MegaGlest community, discuss new features\nand get access to preview releases at http://forums.megaglest.org
-hint32=You can easily contribute your own mods to MegaGlest.\nCheck http://wiki.megaglest.org for more details.
-hint35=There are many hidden and advanced options\navailable in MegaGlest. Run 'megaglest --help'\nto list them from a console.
-hint44=Free software made this game possible, consider how you can help\nsocieties like fsf.org and sourceforge.net
-hint45=Is a translation missing or bad? Would you like to add support\nfor another language? Please read: http://translate.megaglest.org/\nContributing is easy and your work will end up in the next release.
And i am also not sure about these:
-hint33=Got any questions? Something doesn't work?\nCheck http://FAQ.megaglest.org
-hint34=To learn how to host your own games check\nhttp://FAQ.megaglest.org
I think those hints should be quick tips like in other games.
What about add these hints for example:
-You can move around by using the arrow keys or move your mouse to the border of the screen
-To select a unit simply click on it.
-You can quickly select the attack command by pressing '#NoIdeaHowThisAttackKeyIsCalled#'.

Hehe, I didn't actually add the Linux evangelization ones (I did add the MegaGlest ones PT quoted, though). But I do like them. And I like the fact that they made someone post about them.
Initially I was thinking: "Well, I agree with this, and it's also hard to challenge it, but isn't this a bit off-topic?" But then I realized these statements are actually well placed on a libre software cross-platform game, are not offensive, and won't not really hurt anyone. I also think that developers of a software should be always be able to express their opinions, as long as it doesn't interfere with the purpose of the software. And I do think it's a good thing to make some more Windows and OS X users wonder whether these 'rumors' they might have heard are actually true, maybe making them give Linux another try, maybe just in an attempt to proove the opposite, and maybe because they think someone programming such a great software must know what they're talking about.
Why don't we also add a hint that says "White, German, blonde-haired, blue eyed humans are the best people.. ever.. period :) "?
I would think this is obviously very different. In contrary to the Linux statment, this statement does not express something the developers are convinced of. One might think that you are suggesting that recommending Linux and free software is racism?! This is really a very bad comparison.

Maybe rephrase it then?
Linux is the best operating system.. ever.. period :)
This comes off a little bit snarky...
-
How about a simple "Linux rocks"?
-
Linux is the best operating system.. ever.. period :P
-
We could simply remove the linux hint from the windows- and mac-releases ;-)
-
That would reduce this to preaching to the choir though, which is quite useless :P

:(
I searched before starting new topic, and I was glad to find out I'm not the only one trying to be rational about it.
I think we should remove hint 42, which reads Linux is the best operating system.. ever.. period :). Why? Because it's stupid and childish.
Agreed. Why it's stupid and childish? Because it is:
- arrogant: reason behind argument is "period"
- obviously false: "ever" means it's best fit no matter the circumstances, which is simply not true for current IT world
- annoying: it's off topic opinion push
Why don't we also add a hint that says "White, German, blonde-haired, blue eyed humans are the best people.. ever.. period :)"?
A bit extreme example, considering the history, but correct one. Guys who made that argument were, in a similar fashion, making it without rational explanation, and they were also making it a package deal.
Does anyone know, was this resolved (removed) or not?

Nope, it's still there (hint43 in data/lang/hint/hint_english.lng). They didn't even fix the incorrect ellipses or remove the damned smiley face.
I also maintain the majority of "hints" are useless fluff. We'd be better off using a list of hints for each faction, and displaying hints based on the player's faction.

I'm all for promoting Linux, but I agree with Omega about how this is a poor way to persuade people to try Linux out; it's likely to cause the opposite effect. I propose saying something like this: "Linux is a free operating system. MegaGlest is included in most Linux distributions' software repositories." I think this will be worthwhile since it would perhaps promote curiosity among MegaGlest players, rather than resentment or offense. Whether we revise the original Linux promotion hint or not, I definitely vote to do away with the current Linux promotion.

I don't honestly see the big deal. One little hint on a game loading screen that goes by in a few seconds is not life altering to me.

Difference between freeware and adware.
By the way, interestingly, open-source isn't necessarily freeware.
-
Dude, the software is 110% free, it's just a little bit of playful and totally non-intrusive text because Titi is a fan of Linux. If you even can define that as adware, that's totally your problem man.

I love how its not just me and Omega anymore but several other people annoyed with the Linux bullshit. Soon the Oppressors will have to take us seriously! Down with the Linux master race!

Think about it this way: it's a very simple fix to change this hint to something more effectively promotional, and not arrogant and annoying, compared with what it is currently. In full consideration, clearly it's not really a major problem, but considering that a fix like this is so simple, it just makes good sense for it to be done!

I'm a tremendous fan of Linux and even I think the message is kinda obnoxious. :P

Did i mention i also have mentioned this a long time ago too?.
However, i can't decide if i don't care about it. it's like Meh... It's a game folks have a laugh.
On the other hand,Some people give linux way more credit than what it deserves.
-
I never really care what people say about os like but personally I don't think it belongs either. Its up to the devs for MegaGlest but I plan on removing it in next Annex release.

Exactly my point.
Note that nobody complained about hint "hint44=Free software made this game possible, consider how you can help\nsocieties like fsf.org and sourceforge.net", which also promotes something, but not in arrogant and annoying way.
