I tried to change my profile picture to an 128x130 PNG image, but I got this error:
The following errors occurred when trying to save your profile:
The avatar you have selected is either too large or not an avatar.
I tried bigger images and it said the same thing, what is wrong?
-
Try a smaller image.
-
Any smaller then it won't be legible...
-
I'm not an admin and I can't check the settings, but looking at existing avatars, anything below 100x100 should be fine.
-
What! That should be changed!

What! That should be changed!
Why? It's an avatar. It adds almost nothing but a tiny bit of personality. Don't need hundreds of massive avatars to slow down load times. Avatars are already one of the weakest links.
The maximum avatar size is currently 100 x 100.

It takes about one second to load a 1000x1000 avatar, I think it should al least tell you the max size on the profile page if it gong to have such a small limit.
Also the error should say:
The avatar you have selected is either larger than 100x100 or not an avatar.

Please note that this applies to your internet, but not everyone elses. However, as a PNG, a 1000 x 1000 image would likely be over 1 MB. On an 8 Mbps connection (pretty common in my area), it would take at least a second to download. In reality, internet speeds rarely hit their limit, so we can expect at *least* one second to download this image. Then there's up to 19 other user avatars on the same page. Even more, most of the time for a fairly fast connection will be in the request, not the download. For example, for my fairly fast (http://www.speedtest.net/result/3013319303.png) connection, there's approximately a 150 ms delay on pretty much every request because the server "handshake" with my web browser.
While this isn't a big deal compared to the incredibly slow page loading (about two seconds for the server to create the main forum page), I don't see any real need to extend it for something as trivial as avatars.
Also the error should say:
The avatar you have selected is either larger than 100x100 or not an avatar.
It's an SMF error.

A 1000x1000 avatar would also be bigger than my screen. What would you do with such a big image, since it wouldn't make any sense displaying it with its originial size anyway? :look:
-
What? bigger than your screen, I don't think so...
I just thought it should be bigger because no one usually makes stuff that low-res, at the very least it should tell you the max size.
-
My native screen resolution is 1366 x 768. Rare in a gamer forum, I know :P
I still don' know what you would want with a hi res avatar though, since it would then either take up more space than the posts, or be downscaled anyway. SMF should redesign their error message though, I'm with you on that. That's nothing Omega can change though.
-
Yes he can, it can say max resolution is 100x100 where you click the upload button.
-
Why don't you file a bug report with SMF? This way everybody will benefit, not just us :)
-
::) That error is probably a global one that will be displayed if the max size is 2560x2560, or just 5M
