Since 3.9.0 release we record some multiplayer game stats:
Based on those I made this Top 100 list:
http://play.mg/showPlayers.php
( In case you don't know yet, this shows games that are/were played: http://play.mg/ )
-
Can this be expanded to rank players by factors such as number of wins, win-lose ratio, etc?
-
This can be done, but it will not come!
Currently people setup games that are fun to play. These setups are typically challenging and not easy to win. I don't want to encourage people to setup dumb easy games just to rank themself up.
-
I added a column "Total Time Played".
Now you can see how much time you waste playing MG ::)
-
Titi i do not like the idea.
There in no reason to "spying" on users
-
We do not record IP addresses for clients, just for servers. The player statistics we gather are pseudonymous. We also have no incentive to record more data than we need, nor to sell it (nor do I think anyone would want to buy it anyways - but even then we won't).
I don't think we are "spying" on users, and I think we are all quite privacy concerned and want to work towards a good balance of recording pseudonymous information and and being able to provide statistics.
Should we every cross the line, you (and anyone) still have (and will always have, since this is and will remain open source code, too) the ability to setup and run an alternative master server which records as little information as you like (not recording any defeats the servers' purpose).
-
Nevertheless I have a bad feeling about this too, that's why I wanted to at least show what we record ( because many people asked for it ).
We record game setup/ results( like shown on in game stats ) and ... yes player names but no client IPs! Maybe we should really ad an "anonymous" switch in the options that prevents recording the name of the player.
What I personally really want to record is, that there was played a game! I / we need this info to motivate us to go on with development of MegaGlest. We need to know that people really play our game ( and hopefully love it ) as it is too much work to do such a thing just for ourself and our kids.

As server administrator you always will have some statistics about users. But in my opinion there is no reason to share this information with others, who are not megaglest team ...
Ok this site shows who and how many ( hours played, but why? There is no reason, to show this (personal or not)to all others.
It sily stupid in important information, about the users of a strategy game , but it is still information. Why to share it?
-
The information is not really silly. It shows to others too, that people love the game and it maybe motivates the one or the other to play one more game to get a higher rank ;-) . And this very general data we currently show is not really sensitive, or is it ?
And btw data recording does not get better if only a bunch of people have knowledge of it.... MG Team , Provider and NSA know it anyway.

I think an opt-in switch to add the player name like you suggested would solve the privacy issue neatly.
-
I think this isn't spying because hovewere if they don't record your IP you are secure. Then is a good idea add games wins and lose to dimostrate what's your real rank.
-
So I'm happy to discuss any privacy issues, generally.
In this case I hardly see any (yet?) because the information which is visually displayed on this "top 100 active players" list contains only arbitrarily chosen player names, which are not even unique, anyone can set any player name (whether already used by someone else or not) and change them freely.
So if you think this is a privacy issue, please convince us.

This needs a register option. Perhaps tie it into the forums and record games as logged in as ranked games. Or perhaps make special games wich count as ranked games perhaps a quick play mode wich set's up 1v1 games in ranked games when you are logged in. Or perhaps just a 1v1 mode that connects 2 clients randomly?.

I am very interested in the register option. Perhaps there could a server dedicated to 1v1 that records the games within.

me too, but that is not really easy to do. I will think about it.
