I think this has been not been fixed since vanilla Glest, the Swordman/Swordsman's weapon hilt is not aligned with the 2D image, and the G3D files appear the hilt as mostly black, not yellow as expected from the similar Guard unit.
Edit: it's only the swordman_attack.g3d model that is affected, the other swordman/swordsman animation models appear normal.

As I don't get what you are talking about, can you maybe show it on a screenshot ?

Here it is:
On the left, the attack animation; while on the right, the charging animation. The rest of the animations (including the charging) have the sword part of the texture as normal.
It's a texture error for sure.
I recommend to remodel the swordsman for the attack animation only, or better still: remodel the entire swordsman and switch the sword and shield (because of hand dominance issues).

Can't easily do this because we lack the source files for these original Glest models. They weren't created in Blender (and the lack of bones in the G3D model means that importing the G3Ds will have require reanimating everything for any kind of model change).
At any rate, it seems that a minor texture fix should be sufficient to fix this. No need for any kind of change to the model.

(Off topic: The original Glest creators were here a moment ago, they may not have noticed this issue yet)
At any rate, the retexturing is optional/preferred for the next release, if there is time.
If done, the same must go to the Stickfighter units of the Indian and Persian units as well. They have the same black "hilt", not forgetting the tiny grey remains of the "shield" as these units were based on the Tech Swordsman unit.
