General discussion / GAE Installer

There has been interest in using an installer for GAE so I've created this post so I can share my thoughts.

NullSoft (http://nsis.sourceforge.net/Main_Page) or Inno (http://www.jrsoftware.org/isinfo.php) was suggested but these are Windows only. I think it makes sense to use a single installer program for all platforms. I have found http://installjammer.com/ and http://izpack.org/features/ which are multiplatform.

The biggest difference between the two is that the former uses GTK and the latter uses Java. Also installerjammer has a gui to edit options.

Just some notes on testing the trunk on revision 117.

This was when I did the advanced tutorial.

- lags on returning to the resource (not sure if I caused this when I refactored HarvestCommandType ???)
- lags on long paths (@silnarm: you probably already know this)
- initiates started wandering off and eventually came back to harvesting (looked as if they were lost)

This topic is to organise the merging of Glest 3.2.2 with latest GAE trunk. Programmers and testers wanting to participate should post their interest.

@silnarm: Were you wanting to lead this project?

Perhaps start at shared_lib and note any interface changes. Also it might be good to have a diff of Glest 3.2.2  and an earlier version of GAE (to get a reference) with latest GAE trunk.

General discussion / TinyXML Branch Ready for Testing

You should be able to play a single player game with TinyXML now with the tinyxml branch from https://glestae.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/glestae/branches/tinyxml .

You will need to get TinyXML from http://www.grinninglizard.com/tinyxml/ and compile the STL project and add #define TIXML_USE_STL to the top of tinyxml.h .

I've done up some tests if people want to try. Modify the xml and see if the errors are what you expect.

====Tests
Normal:
- load an xml file (starting a game), includes one that has comments (ie air_ballista.xml)
- file with no doctype (should still work)
- try different spacing, it shouldn't matter
- text in between tags (probably won't do anything in Glest) (eg. <element> text </element> )

Error:
- bad attribute: no value and quotes (but with the equals)
- multiple root elements
- bad element: no ending tag bug has starting tag
- bad element: no starting tag but has ending tag
- empty file (or with some text but not xml) (not really an error but Glest wants particular elements to be present)

Using a malformed xml we can get it to crash. I think when the exit button is then clicked the dch (in Windows) is deleted. program then goes out of scope and is destructed. It gets to delete preCrashState; and gets an assertion error in gl_wrap.h

This is happening in Windows with the latest GAE trunk. I think it could also be happening on Linux too. Commenting out the delete line causes it to exit as expected.

OK I think I know what's happening.

The previous state is saved which happens to be the 'game' state. When this state tries to be deleted it tries to print a message to the screen with the logger but the window with the context has already been destroyed so it crashes with the assertion error.

There seems to be a problem with the group selection patch I recently stuck in too which somehow only happens when it crashes. Anyway it's late now so I'll have a look at it more another time or if someone else wants to give it a go.

EDIT: also I think I found a few lines of code that aren't needed like in crash it runs a loop around the same loop and restoring video mode in the catch blocks when program does that when it destructs.

Unfortunately Daniel hasn't posted on the forum for a few weeks and hasn't committed anything to svn since 28 April so I'll make some changes so that people can continue working on GAE:

1. Copy the latest version (r308) to the Sourceforge svn on the trunk. Any large modifications like pathfinding, networking, AI or GUI should be done in a new branch. The trunk should be usable at all times (ie stable) and a branch should be compilable at all times but not necessarily usable. I'll provide instructions for creating a branch once it's setup.

2. The bug tracker on Daniel's server isn't functioning so we'll need to abandon it and start using the bug tracker on Sourceforge

3. Create a new branch for upgrading to the latest Glest (add Lua etc)

4. Create a new branch for network code and remove unstable network code from the trunk

5. Make a stable version that people are able to compile on Linux and Windows (and downloadable binary packages)

As always feedback is encouraged (especially from programmers wanting to contribute code).

These instructions are for Visual Studio 2008 Express on Windows. Some of the smaller details might need more looking at but the general steps are there.

I didn't get the events working with the downloadable libs so I needed to compile it myself:
  • Download the source
  • Download these libs:
    Devil - http://openil.sourceforge.net
    Freetype2 - http://www.freetype.org
    Pcre - http://www.pcre.org
    If you want LUA support you need LUA - http://www.lua.org/
  • add the libs to the libs folder and include files to dependencies/include
  • go to 'makefiles/premake' and setup config.lua to use the above libs (i used without samples option)
  • run build_vs2008.bat
  • open CEGUI.sln and make sure the include dirs and libs are correct
  • compile it
  • now that is compiled, open up glest 0.3
  • if you compiled as static lib you need to add dependencies to glest too (not shared_lib)
  • copy headers to include dir and libs to lib dir:
    (_d.lib for debug configuration and without _d for release otherwise there are problems with events)
    CEGUIBase_Static_d.lib
    CEGUIDevILImageCodec_Static_d.lib
    CEGUIFalagardWRBase_Static_d.lib
    CEGUITinyXMLParser_Static_d.lib
    OpenGLGUIRenderer_Static_d.lib

    winmm.lib (needed for "symbol __imp__timeGetTime@0")
  • Additional DLLs needed (more if others arent static libs):
    ILU.dll

    DevIL.dll
    freetype6.dll
  • add CEGUI_STATIC to preprocessor definitions
  • add "stlport_vc7_static.lib;LIBC.lib" to "Ignore Specific Library"
  • try compiling
  • download the data files
  • copy binaries to data files

CEGUI creates CEGUI.log when you run the exe.

I found I'm Cross! used to compile Windows and Mac programs on Linux and also create installers. Even if we don't use that InstallJammer looks good.

When I have finished adding a GUI lib there will be a job for someone to create a Glest style skin.

This means learning the skinning system, creating xml files and images for widgets, mouse icons, fonts, etc.

Don't get caught up on the specific system at the moment. What we need is designs for: button, check box, drop down box, scroll bars, mouse icons, window, status  bar. There are probably more but that will do for now.

Just thinking into the future a bit here to after the GUI lib is in. I would like to have a debug toolbox to change different settings on the fly. Maybe a console could do the same. Depends if you're into GUI or command line I guess.

Some features could be:
  • Turn off/on rain
  • Turn off/on mouse pointer
  • Remove/Change AI player
  • Lots more...

This could also work in with server controls.

This could be an AI attribute that affects many different behaviours of a unit. Like if they automatically guard or take the shortest path or avoid traps or come to the aid of nearby units or retreat. I think this would make some units more independent than others; I'm not sure if this would be a good thing.

I've downloaded and compiled the 0.3 branch. Is it meant to be able to use shortcut keys, such as escape for exiting?

I also tried using a 0.2 branch binary and it wouldn't load because the glestadv.ini had been modified and was no longer correct. I just replaced it with an older version to fix it.
