Hi, i like playing megaglest in single mod, especially playing mods that are not played so much as the megapack. I usually modify the xml files to make the game more fast at the start (so i usually skip the "gather resources" phase). Today i played a game on the latest svn with the mod "enemies and allies" with the modified xml file and i got a segmentation fault! I think (but i am not sure) the error happened because the map i played was too small to contain all the units. It's not the first i have too many units for a map, it happened two other times and i got 2 different results:

1 time ) megaglest shown me an error message saying like "there are too many units for the map"
2 time ) megaglest loaded/shown just one faction (of the two that should have been loaded/shown)

And this time (the third) i got a segmentation fault as i said above.

This error is reproducible (at the least on my system: lucid linx 32 bits,4gb of ram (but just 3 and something used), amd athlon x2,ATI HD raedon 3200) following these steps:

1) modify the xml file called "enemies_and_allies.xml" that you can find in: /home/yourusername/.megaglest/techs/enemies_and_allies/factions/enemies_and_allies

2) run megaglest (svn r3455) from the terminal

3) create an offline game with the following specs: 
-map: conflict
-player0: you, player1: CPU easy,player 2: CPU easy, player 3: CPU easy
-2vs2
-pathfinder type: regular
-fog of war: on
-tileset: pine peat
-techtree: enemies and allies

4) start the game

5) megaglest will load everything but then the screen will become black and after some seconds you will get a segmentation fault  similar to this (at the least i got it two times):

In the latest svn (or something like that) it  was added a "block" to avoid that 1 player use one of the headless servers to play alone with the cpu and waste the efforts of those who run headless servers to improve the quality of the multiplayer experience on mg. I tried to play on a headless server 1vs1 (me vs a cpu) and the "block" works, the problem is that there is no messages that tells me why i can't play on that server in this way! If you click on "play now" nothing happens, this could cause confusion and/or false bug report about "it's impossible to play alone on the headless servers". I suggest to show a message when someone is alone on the headless server and clicks on "play now" that explains why he can't play alone keeping an headless server busy for a game that he could play in single player.

Something like " we are sorry but playing alone on an headless server damages the others player online experience because it doesnt allow other players to use it while you use it just to play alone vs the cpu" or something like that would be good imo :)

Some factions (for example romans) have buildings made up by two buildings or that contain spaces, these spaces are not clickable, i think they should because they are within the borders of the circle (the one that appears when you select buildings) and because it would be handy :)

Feature requests / Restart the game directly from the game

hi all, i think that having the possibilty to restart the match simply pressing "esc" and then "restart game" would be very good. Some of you my say "but there is already a way to do it, simply create a game and click "reload the previous game settings" (or something like that, i dont know the exact translation since i dont play mg in english), this is true, but it can be handy if you want to play the same game time later than the game you played. If you want to restart the game after 5 min of game (wrong strategy etc.) you could simply restart the game and in 5 seconds you would be playing again the game. I am thinking about this feature for people (that like me) play megaglest also in single player, but could be useful for multiplayer too. i think this idea should work like this:

- create a game
- mg loads the tileset,factions etc.
- mg creates a file called for example "currentgame" that contain the things that mg loaded before
-you press esc->restart game
-mg loads the "currentgame"
-the game restarted

This could be implemented as i said also for multiplayer, and probably would be even more useful, since many times happens that we want to restart the game (a player got disconnected, bad strategy,bad team cooperation, someone away from keyboard without saying it etc.). I dont know how hard is to implement this feature but i think it would be useful. The "currentgame" file could be deleted when mg gets closed and recreated during the loading of the next game or simply left there (if not so big) and overwritten the first time you load another game.

Hi, i think it would be very useful to add a small icon close to the name of the player that controls the headless server, many times (especially when there are 7/8 players) people hve problems to realize who controls the headless server, it can happen that the one that controls it is a new player so he doesnt know what to do, or simply it's a player away from keyboard. This leads to "who controls?you?no,me not,you?no,who controls?" which is just  a waste of time and it's not fun. So i suggest to place an icon (i was thinking about an hand or a little star or a less "glest style" computer icon) close to the name o the player that controls the headless server, so it's easy for everyone to understand who is :)

Hi, after the first installation megaglest simply let's you playing with a default name, there is a problem (in my opinion) in this thing, the problem is that many new players dont know how to change their name and they have also problems to ask to someone how to do it (if they dont speak english) so my idea is to put after the first installation (the first time you launch megaglest) a prompt window with a welcome message and the space to put your name (plus some useful links like for the forum, the website and for the FAQ).

Hi, when i was playing the r3365 (i hosted a game to reproduce the grey background bug reported by tomreyn) i finished the game and i clicked the button to see the game stats (i dont remember the english translation for that!) and i expected to see the grey background again but i didnt because megaglest crashed. I am on ubuntu lucid lynx 32 bit 3gb of ram and my graphic card is an ATI HD3200 and i am using proprietary drivers (version 8.72, those shipped by default, i know they are old but they work good).

Hi all, days go while playing japanese in the dev version (i dont remember what rev sorry) with tomreyn and atze (if i am not wrong) i found a strange bug. At a certain pint i selected the units and the circles changed colour from green to pink (you know that colour typical when you have problems with a missing texture etc.) plus two bigger circle appeared over the selected units. I tried to move the units without trying to unselect and reselect them again and these pink circles followed the selected unit. When i unselect the units the pink circles returned green and the two big pink circles disappeared.

I found this bug maybe 2 or 3 times but this time i took a picture this: http://i49.tinypic.com/35kv67n.png

(note: i put the picture in black and white becuse those pink circles were disturbing, at the least for me. Oh and you can't see the green player name because with black and white the green disappered in the background, it's not  bug ;) ).

I dont know if it's a graphic card related bug..because tomreyn told me he saw that bug too (not in that game) so maybe it's a bug of megaglest and not a bug of my video drivers for example.

My pc:
Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx 32 bit,3gb of ram, AMD Athlon 64 X2 dual core processor QL-64 (2.1 GHz, 1 mb L2 cache). I am using proprietary drivers ATI catalyst 8.72.11 (i know they are old but they work!)

How to reproduce the bug: I dont know! It happened random!

If you have seen this bug, report it here please! So we know that it's not a bug of video drivers :)

When we play online can happen that a player (or more) drops and the ai gets his place. The problem is that if you press "?" after the player got disconnected you still see his name as he was still playing, while it's the AI that is playing!  Often happens that players dont remember "who is who" like "who is yellow? who is red?" a way to see it it's pressing "?" but as i said if a player got disconnected minutes ago you still see his name and this can cause confusion! I suggest that in case the player gets disconnected the name should be changed to something like "CPU" or "AI" or "Pizza90(ai)" or "Pizza90(CPU)" or something like that so people would recognize easily that the player Pizza90 is not playing online any more and the one that is playing it's the AI.

Sometime i like playing offline with and vs the CPU, it's nice for a quick game when maybe there are not others players online. In single player you can play vs cpu or with cpu vs other cpu (this is valid for multiplayer games too), the problem with playing with the CPU is that CPU plays as a player but has zero interaction with its team. If you play with a real player and he just go to attack alone you can tell him to wait you and he usually does it, with CPU you can't do it, CPU simply rushes against the enemy while maybe you are not ready to attack yet or you are rebuilding your base because you got attacked just few time ago. My idea to improve the experience while playing with CPU is to add 3 commands to tell the CPU "hey wait me" or "please come help to my base i am getting attacked".

My idea would work like this:
There would be 3 commands "attack with me" "wait me" and "return to the base because i am getting attacked"

To make the experience more realistic every command has a % of acceptance, for example the "attack with me" command would have a 80% of positive answer, so 8 times on 10 AI would follow your request to attack the enemy with you. Same thing for the "wait me" command, while for the cmmand "return to the base because i am getting attacked there should be a 100% positive answer in my opinion.

I hope you understood what i tried to explain :) For me it seems a thing not easy to implement, but i think it would really make the experiences of playing with cpu (vs other players or other cpu) better.

Tonight me and tomreyn played Japanese version (2vs2cpu) and i just had this problem (happened 2 times). I dont know if it depends on the faction (we didnt try with the megapack) or with the new fast pathfinder (that was enabled manually for testing in the game). I can't tell you steps how to reproduce it because it happens just playing, no steps to do to get the error (which megaglest says it's an out of sync error). I got a stack trace:

This is not a feature request for the developers ehe it's a feature request for everyone who wants to help megaglest because lkes it likes its community etc. Before to explain why everyone interested should help megaglest i will tell you what we people can continue to do:

we (im talking in a general way, me as many people have never said so) can continue to open 200 feature requests thread per day, we can criticze the developers because are not fast enough, we can say that mg is a crap because it doesn has putthennamehere feature and so on, the result of this (i think) will be that megaglest developers will stop the develoopment of this awesome game because they will be tired of all these not helpful criticism and megaglest will just become unplayable with no new features with new bugs etc. do you want it? I DONT! So this is my feature request for everyone who wants to help: help megaglest and the developers! How? These are some ideas:

1) Traslate megaglest in a new language
2) Make good maps that will be included to the main game
3) Make good factions that can be included in the main game
4) Report bugs in a correct and detailed way when you see them
5) Make constructive criticism and feedback
6) Test the alpha,beta etc versions!
7) If you compiled the development version please share it on the forum, so people (like me) that would like to help but dont know how to compile it can play it and help the testing
8- Donate money,time (moderating the forum, helping the wiki) and other things (like running an headless server) to megaglest
9) Open bounties for features you would like to see (i dont know if developers like this thing maybe it's better if you ask them before to open a bounty)
10) Tell to yor friends about megaglest so megaglest will be more played and maybe we it will get more developers

Ok these were just mine ideas to help megaglest, for those who may think "what did pizza do for megaglest?" i translated megaglest in itlalian, i keep the italian translation updated, i report bugs and as soon as someone makes a linux build of the development version i will test it :)

Feature requests / Explaing why an IP address was blocked

Note: the italian translation has an error about it i translated the string in a wrong way, it says that "your ip address has been blocked" not a not specified ip address. I am sorry for the error, i will correct it in the next version.

I recently got an error about a IP Address blocked while playing online, i thought that it was mine (because of my wrong translation), but it wasn't, it was the IP address of another player, well i want to suggest that there should be an explanation of why that IP was blocked/banned. Like "IP address xxxx was blocked  because: lag etc." or "the IP address xxxxx of the player xx has been blocked because.." I think seeing the message of a blocked IP address without an explanation is a little confusing, so i propose to show the reason for the ban of the IP address and the owner of the IP address in the message.

Hi guys, today i just installed megaglest 3.6.0, when i installed it then i started the game and i got an error (if im not something about maps?) and without reading the error i clicked ok ( :-[ ) and nothing happened. I restarted megaglest to see if everything was ok and i found it in english instead of italian. So i just clicked in "options" to set the language in italian and i got an error, when i click ok after few seconds megaglest crashes. I tried to open a game vs the cpu and it works but when i go in options it crashes!

operative system:
ubuntu linux 32 bit

step to reproduce it (at the least on my computer):
- open megaglest
- click on "options"

Feature requests / Compressing the factions in a zip or 7z file

If im not wrong on the forum i read that gae compress the factions in compressed files to save space, could megaglest do that too? I think it would be a good feature because the download would be less heavy and the space occupied on the hd minor, without thinking that we could add more factions without having a 500mb installer. What do you think guys?

Hi guys, i dont know if this is a bug or something like that, when i close megaglest, the game instead of closing quick as normal it takes like 3 or 4 seconds. During these seconds the mouse key (the one of megaglest) gets stuck and i can see the one i use normally for my operative system.

Im on ubuntu lucid lynx 10.04 32 bit (using the beta 3.5.3).

This is not a very important thing but it is a little annoying since it didnt happen in 3.5.2.

Hi, i just played a quick game vs the ai, the beta seems stable to me, i didnt find bugs or crashes for now, here are some feedback.

What i liked:
- This beta in general
- The settings for the language changing
- The pause/resume and the new menu if you press esc in game
- The new animations of the romans, from what i have understood for now only romans have them right? I think all the factions of megaglest should have them, they are nice.

What i didnt like:
- The fonts now are more transparent and in my opinion the old one were better
- The yellow smiles in the mod center close to the not installed mods, for me it over bloats the interface and the icons are also blurred
- The opacity of the button of mod you have installed, i think having them like before (with the green "V" close) it's good and doesnt confuse the thing
- I thought that the fonts for the food, gold, stone ,wood etc. were bigger than before, while they are not, they are smaller and more transparent, i prefered old ones (but bigger).

What i liked but could be improved:
- The intro is nice but i think the black background is a little empty (and the roman spearman looks without feet because his boots are of the same colour of the background) maybe adding a forest or a sky (for the fight in the sky) would be better?

I didnt play an online game yet because i didnt see anyone online with the beta, if someone wants to play a beta just tell me!

Hi guys i just tried to play a game 2vs2 with 3 other guys, after the loading of the factions i got the message "waiting for players:" but no name was shown, after 80 seconds of waiting the game started but i got an error message something like that "error detected" and the game was paused. I also took a screenshot but i can't find it. Im on ubuntu lucid lynx 10.04 32bit using megaglest 3.5.2. I dont know if this is a bug or not if it is i hope you can fix it, if it is not a bug sorry for the false report. Greetings :)

This feature as the one of private games, it's not a necessary feature, but as i said for the private games, many games have it so if others people like the idea why not to add it (dont get me wrong im not saying that it's easy to add) and make megaglest even more rich of features. Im talking about the possibility to speak during games using a program like a voip (sorry im not expert about this) with microphone and headphones. Of course there should be the ability to allow or not allowing it in the options. If someone has an idea about it well say it.

I can understand that for now (since the community is not very large) this is not a "must have" feature, but since many games have it i dont see why megaglest should not have it. Im talking about the possibility to create private games protected by a password (nothing very long of course maybe 4 or 5 letters/numbers). In the list of game private games would have close a "lock" and when you click on it the game would ask you for the password.

I saw that some people suggested things to improve the usability of the chat, so i'd like to suggest two more improvements two the chat:

- the ability to copy and past links (or words using the mouse)
- the ability to switch keyboard layouts

The first suggestion is easy to understand, the second not i think, so i want to explain it better. People that dont use latin letters (like russian,chinese, japanese etc.) usually have their keyboards with latin letters too, they press a tab and for example they can write a piece in their language and then switching to english and writing in english. While i see for most of the user this is not a thing they care of (for example im italian and to write in english or italian i dont need this), i think it's very important because the next release of megaglest will add support also for non latin letters. Think if you play with a person from Russia for example, if he has megaglest in fullscreen he can't switch language so even if you talk to him in english he can't reply in english because he can use only Cyrillic letters during your chat. As i said for people that use latin alphabet may sound useless but im sure for those who dont use it it would be useful (btw if there are people that agree with me tell it). I think megaglest should allow the player to change the language of keyboard (i dont know if keyboard layout is the right word) and maybe show for example "It" o "ITA" for italian or "RU" or "RUS" for russian. Of course if you dont have other language installed on your pc megaglest chat should not show these things :) I hope i explained the thing in an understandable way. Greetings.

With this post i dont want to tease the work of guys that work on mg for free (i appreciate your work really!), i just want to criticize how actually the mod system works. I dont know if you guys play mg with mods or not, personally i do because i think mods add fun to the game. I noticed that not many people have installed mods (my opinion), so every time we play online we always end playing mg factions without any new mod. I think it's because the way to install and use mods it's confusing. I usually play the mods with the mg factions as most of people i  think (i dont think play 4 vs 4 all the same mod it's not so much fun).

this is how things should go:

a: hey let's play mod XX
b: i dont have it!
a: just download it!
b: okay
*b installes the XX mod*
b: i have it now!
a: okay let's play me vs you, i will use XX you can play the romans

this is how things go:


a: hey let's play XX mod!
b: i dont have it!
a: download it!
b: okay!
*b installs xx mod*
a:did you install it?
b:yes but wait i can't play it vs mg
a:yes you have to move the mod in the mg folder
b:where is?
a: in ....
b: oh.. let me try
*minutes later*
b: i did it
a:now you have to restart!
b:now?
*another player enters in game*
a: oh -.- let's play mg factions!

This is how things go, if you think it's not true, try to play a mod with other people! So what's the problem? The problem is that if someone install a mod probably he wants to play it with mg and not alone, so i propose to put in download centre just the mods that are mg compatible!  If someone wants to make a mod with another techtree he should also put one compatible with mg! And again please to those who make the mods: separate your mod, 1 faction 1 download, so people can chose what to download! Im sure the download mod centre can be improved and feedbacks are good for this right? I hope you will get my criticism as good and wont answer like "if you dont like the thing do it yourself" or "if you dont like it change game". Thanks for the time you spent reading my post :)

Hi guys, today i want to suggest you something i think it would be nice. The ability to turn off the sound in megaglest during a game. I know now pressing "k" you can turn on the music but you still get the birds or the sounds of the attacks etc. , while it would be nice to turn off the sound. Why? Well would be nice if you would want listen music while playing or doing something different while your units are building etc. I think we could still us the "k" button in this order: turn off the music -> turn on the music-> turn off the sound -> turn on the sound. Of course there should be a message saying you are turning off the sound.
A problem of this would be that you would not hear the sound in case of your attacks at you..but i dont think it's a big problem since however you are following the game so you know what happens :)

ps: i know you can turn off the sound in options but i think a nice "on the fly" thing would be nicer without thinking that during a match you can't go out turn off the sound etc.

Tools / How much is difficult to make a mod from 0?

Hi guys, after playing megaglest for a while i'd like to make my mod. My problem is that i dont know how to modelling! After few days of trying with blender 2.5 i think i understood how does it works well maybe not all the basics but something. I searched guides for making models on glest and now i have some questions, i hope someone expert will answer.

1) How much would take (in weeks or months) to make a mod? (i could spend maybe 1 or 2 hours per day) Think that i start from zero.
2) I found a good guide on glestguide.co.cc is it still good?
3) If in a model i use a public domain texture but with some others thing created by me, how does it work? Is all the texture in public domain even if it has my things?
4) Does the exporter for blender 2.4 work on 2.5? I searched on the forum but seems that the one for 2.5 is not ready yet right?
5) I can't find the folder where to put the exporter in windows xp (and what about ubuntu?)
6) Is it required to code to make a mod?

Sorry for the long list but im a newbie :)

ps: i put my questions here and not in "mods" because i thought it was more about the tools, if i was wrong please move where you think it's better and sorry.
