Announcements / Glest 3.1.2 Released
« on: 5 March 2008, 20:03:56 »
Hello,

We've just released Glest 3.1.2, this version contains a few critical fixes, that should improve the game experience.

Features

The main fix if the one for slow building placement in post 7.9 Catalyst drivers, also in this version the game won't let you start a multiplayer game with different binaries (you can disable this in glest.ini, with NetworkConsistencyChecks=0, but do it at your own risk).

The full list:

- Fixed slow building placement in ATI cards with catalyst 7.10 or newer
- Fixed fog of war smoothing
- Improved position picking when giving orders
- Fixed some glitches in shadows
- Added red colored building cursor when trying to build in an invalid location
- Fix for empty chat messages
- Reduced Drake Rider morphing time from 120 to 80 and reduced splash radius attack of a few units
- Improved battlemachine death animation
- The game now checks that all players are using the same binaries

How to get it

Windows: download the installer.
Linux: Download binaries and data. Source code also available (but we recommend the official binaries, thanks to titus for compliling them).

The best way to arrange multiplayer games is the #glest  irc channel at irc.freenode.net. You can also use AF lobby.

Please give us your feedback.

Hello,

Apparently ATI drivers have been completely rewritten recently, and new versions have serious bugs, that cause the following problems in Glest:

- Trying to select units or place buildings makes the game slow down a lot.
- Projected shadows are really slow (shadow maps are okay).

We will try work around these bugs in case ATI don't fix them, but by now there are a couple of possible solutions:

a) Revert your video card drivers to Catalyst 7.9 or earlier. The bug seems to be there from catalyst 7.10 to 8.2 (latest version at the moment I write this post). The last working Linux version seems to be 8.40.4. The Linux open source diver seems to work too.

b) If you don't want to do that, and you are under Windows, you just copy the atioglxx.dll file from the 7.9 Catalyst into the Glest folder. A step by step install description is stated here.

c) As stated before, under Linux you can use the open source drivers, that seem to work fine.

The problem is caused by OpenGL selection mode being implemented in software. Additionally the problem seems to be better in 8.2 compared to 7.12, so it seems to indicate that ATI knows that this is a serious issue and they are trying to fix it (it doesn't affect Glest only but also Maya and other CAD software apparently).

Everything works fine on NVidia cards which have better drivers. Anyway, we already have a partial fix for it in the svn, and we will work around it eventually if we see ATI doesn't do anything about it.

This is a small update, a couple of features:

- Improved shadows: They are more detailed, darker, and they use the alpha in the trees.
- Command line interface: You can launch Glest from the command line  as a server or client.

How to play:

Windows: Download the installerand follow the instructions.

Linux: Download data and binaries.

The source code is also available but as usual everybody in an online game has to be running the same binaries.

Please remember to visit our IRC channel (irc.freenode.net #glest) to find people to play online.

General discussion / New shadows, please give feedback
« on: 24 February 2008, 00:25:45 »
Hello,

I've checked in some improvements to the shadows in the svn code:

- Tree shadows now use the alpha for the trees, meaning that the shape of the shadow is more accurate, it looks more like a tree instead of being a polygonal shape.

- Increased default shadow resolution from 256 to 512 (you need the new glest.ini for this)

- Increased shadow opacity

The code is in the svn for for people to try, I'm really interested in feedback about framerate (enable debug menu to see), and what people's opinion is in general.

Announcements / Glest 3.1.0 Beta
« on: 9 February 2008, 22:47:15 »
Hello,

Following the release of 3.0.0, we are working on a few things that will improve the multiplayer experience:

- In game chat.
- Easier way of connecting to hosts.
- New maps suitable for multiplayer.

All this stuff is added to the new 3.1.0-beta.

For windows: Download the patch at www.glest.org/files
For linux: Dowload the windows patch and use the data on it, as for the exe the code is in the svn.

Feedback would be welcome.

You can visit the irc channel at irc://irc.freenode.net/glest to arrange multiplayer matches.

Mods / Mods and online play
« on: 4 February 2008, 22:37:25 »
Mods are 100% compatible with online play, however:

- All players must be using exactly the same tech tree, if not the game will give a checksum error.

- This means, that if you install a new faction in the Magitech TechTree (like the indians), you will not be able to play online unless all players have the indians installed.

- The best way of solving the problem is to make a copy of the magitech tech tree (just copy and paste in the same folder), and install you mods in there.

- All mods can avoid this problem by making their own tech trees instead of just patching the magitech one.

Getting and using Glest translations.

There is a repository of Glest translations here.

Just download the file you need and unzip it in the core/lang folder of your game, after that the language will become available in the options folder. The default game includes English, Spanish and Galician.

You can use older translations for new versions of the game, however some of the strings will be untranslated.

Making a new translation.

If you make a new translation of the game please send it to us, or post it in this board, and we will upload it.

Please use the following file naming convention: language_version.zip.

Maps, tilesets and scenarios / Maps overview
« on: 2 February 2008, 19:00:14 »

All maps documentation has been ported to the wiki:

Editing maps.

You can edit maps using the Glest Map Editor.

For Windows, it is included in the tools package at sourceforge.

For Linux, you need to get the source code from the SVN and compile it. It now works with unicode versions of wxWidgets too.

Getting and playing user maps.

There is a directory of user made maps
Code: [Select]
[url=http://www.glest.org/files/contrib/maps/]here[/url], to play them just unzip them in the maps folder of the game and them select them from the New Game menu. Also check the Glest Wikia's map database.

If you made any maps and want them uploaded just send them to us, or post a link at this board. Please put them in a zip file with the same name as the map, and also if possible include a readme file crediting yourself.

Hints for map making.

- Maps need to have dimensions that are a power of 2, like 32, 64 or 128
- If you want to use your map for multiplayer games, make sure that every faction has about 5 gold spots near the base, and 5 more in a close expansion.
- Don't create complicated mazes, pathfinding will be bad in those cases.
