Announcements / Glest 2.0-rc1 released
« on: 10 November 2005, 00:24:24 »
At last, Glest 2.0-rc1 has been released. The version is not the complete 2.0 though, some icons are missing and some animations will be improved. But it includes most of the features that will be present in the final version.

- New Magic units:

   - Tower of Souls: Air defense building, attacks air only
   - Golem: Defensive unit, needs EP to walk, can't attack air
   - Daemon giant: Heavy melee unit
   - Drake rider: Light ranged unit

- New Tech units:

   - Aerodrome: Building for producing air units
   - Air ballista: Air defense building, attacks air only
   - Horseman: Fast medium unit
   - Ornithopter: Light air unit
   - Airship: Heavy air unit, can't attack air

- New Magic upgrades
- New Tech upgrades
- New animations for existing units
- Loads of balance changes

New units really change the way factions are played. Magic faction has now a defensive unit, the golem, that makes them stronger at the early stages of the game. Tech faction has air units now, but they should be less powerfull because both factions now have anti air defenses, that make towns very difficult to attack with air units only.

To play this version download the dataand win32 binary packages from sourceforge. Linux users you can still use 1.2.1 source code with 2.0-rc1 data.

Linux and other ports / Glest 1.2.1 code released
« on: 23 October 2005, 11:44:47 »
This is basically the same stuff as in the CVS in a zip file. In this version we tried to fix the problems that some people has with the ARB OpenGL shader extensions, the shader files are not needed anymore to compile Glest (and they have been removed from the release).

Any feedback is welcome.

General discussion / outro bug
« on: 22 October 2005, 18:59:42 »
I found a bug in Glest.
I was gonna start a new game, I se myself as the third player on a 4 player map, I switched map and there was only two players, CPU and CPU. I wasn't paying a lot of attention, and I just clicked to start the game. It started loading as usual, and crashed.
I just thought you should know. ;)

Announcements / Glest 1.2-rc1 released
« on: 24 August 2005, 23:49:01 »
Glest 1.2-rc1 has been released, the new features in this version are:

- New tileset objects
- AI now expands its base
- 2 new maps: "in the forest" and "island siege"
- Improved existing maps
- Pathfinding optimizations
- Fixed issues in windowed mode

As usual with release candidates you will need to download the data and win32 packages from the sourceforge Glest website. The latest code is also in the CVS, but we didn't test it under linux yet.

Any feedback would be apreciated. Do you like the new maps? do you think that that AI is better? I'm having a weird issue as well, sometimes the game doesn't restore the correct video mode after exiting, does that happened to anyone?

General discussion / Translation submission guidelines.
« on: 19 July 2005, 19:17:04 »
We are receiving a lot of translations for Glest, in order to keep things unified and easy, please follow the following instructions when submitting them.

- Send us a plain lng file, not a zipped one, is not nice to force us to open a zip file from an unknown sender.

- Credit yourself in the top line of the translation file. You can put comments anywhere just by placing a semi-colon at the beggining of the line.

- Name your file Language_Version.lng, like "French_1.1.0.lng".

Mods / G3Dv4 format spec
« on: 9 June 2005, 19:21:23 »
================================
0. INTRO
================================

G3D is a binary format used for Glest for 3D models and animations. Currently a plugin for 3dsmax exists. Glest is using version 4 of this format.

Many people asked us to make a plugin for Blender but we don't have the time for doing it, however this is the spec for G3Dv4 in the case anyone wants to take a look at it.

Glest uses a rather simple 3D format, in many ways similar to MD2 (the Quake 2 format).

The Glest code for loading 3D models is in model_header.h and model.h/cpp files in the "Glest Shared Library" graphics module.

EDIT: This spec refers to the latest version of the format, since it has changed in Glest 1.1.0 release candidates.

================================
1. DATA TYPES
================================

G3D files use the following data types:

uint8: 8 bit unsigned integer
EDIT: uint16: 16 bit unsigned integer
uint32: 32 bit unsigned integer
float32: 32 bit floating point

================================
2. OVERALL STRUCTURE
================================

- File header
- Model header
- Mesh header
- Texture names
- Mesh data

================================
2. FILE HEADER
================================

EDIT: All structures are assumed to be packed.

Code: [Select]
struct FileHeader{
uint8 id[3];
uint8 version;
};

This header is shared among all the versions of G3D, it identifies this file as a G3D model and provides information of the version.

id: must be "G3D"
version: must be 4, in binary (not '4')

================================
3. MODEL HEADER
================================

Code: [Select]
struct ModelHeader{
uint16 meshCount;
uint8 type;
};

meshCount: number of meshes in this model
type: must be 0

================================
4. MESH HEADER
================================

There is a mesh header for each mesh, there must be "meshCount" headers in a file but they are not consecutive, texture names and mesh data are stored in between.

Code: [Select]
struct MeshHeader{
uint8 name[64];
uint32 frameCount;
uint32 vertexCount;
uint32 indexCount;
float32 diffuseColor[3];
float32 specularColor[3];
float32 specularPower;
float32 opacity;
uint32 properties;
uint32 textures;
};

name: name of the mesh
frameCount: number of keyframes in this mesh
vertexCount: number of vertices in each frame
indexCount: number of indices in this mesh (the number of triangles is indexCount/3)
diffuseColor: RGB diffuse color
specularColor: RGB specular color (currently unused)
specularPower: specular power (currently unused)
properties: property flags

Code: [Select]
enum MeshPropertyFlag{
mpfCustomColor= 1,
mpfTwoSided= 2
};

mpfTwoSided: meshes in this mesh are rendered by both sides, if this flag is not present only "counter clockwise" faces are rendered
mpfCustomColor: alpha in this model is replaced by a custom color, usually the player color

textures: texture flags, only 0x1 is currently used, indicating that there is a diffuse texture in this mesh.

================================
4. TEXTURE NAMES
================================

A list of uint8[64] texture name values. One for each texture in the mesh. If there are no textures in the mesh no texture names are present. In practice since Glest only uses 1 texture for each mesh the number of texture names should be 0 or 1.

================================
5. MESH DATA
================================

After each mesh header and texture names the mesh data is placed.

vertices: frameCount * vertexCount * 3, float32 values representing the x, y, z vertex coords for all frames
normals: frameCount * vertexCount * 3, float32 values representing the x, y, z normal coords for all frames
texture coords: vertexCount * 2, float32 values representing the s, t tex coords for all frames (only present if the mesh has 1 texture at least)
indices: indexCount, uint32 values representing the indices

================================
6. G3D EXPORTER
================================
Working G3D exporter for Blender 2.6x as a python script: Download
Documentation: G3D support

Edit by Omega: Fixed error as noted by Yggdrasil here

Latest stable version: Latest Glest stable version can be downloaded from downloads section in Glest website.

Latest version: Latest Glest version can be downloaded from Glest sourceforge website (http://sourceforge.net/projects/glest). "glest data" and "glest win32 binaries" packages need to be downloaded and uncompressed in in the same folder, in this order.

Bug report / Ati card crash
« on: 26 May 2005, 19:24:50 »
Glest crashes on ATI cards when more than one light is used. This seems to be a bug in ATI drivers related with attenuated point lights.

From 1.1.0-rc1 you can change the number of lights in the the in-game config menu. Glest should detect this issue and set the number of lights to 1 on ATI cards though.

Linux and other ports / About Glest Linux port
« on: 26 May 2005, 19:15:47 »
Glest has been ported to Linux by Matze Braun, not by the Glest Team (thanks Matze!) (http://http://www.stud.uni-karlsruhe.de/~uxsm/glest/).

The Linux port is now integrated in the main project, to play Glest on Linux, download the latest data and source packages from our sourceforge website (http://http://sourceforge.net/projects/glest) and compile the source code. You can also use some of the packages made by other people, there are links to them in this board.

The latest source is always available at the CVS (this is usually more up to date than the latest code package).

Glest is also included in SUSE Linux 10.0.

Any questions/sugestions/problems please post in this forum.
