Warning this method for fixing megaglest is very crude and a patch is being worked on to make this process easier. Check whether this patch is available before following these steps.

I have compiled a binary using a patch made by filux that fixes the bug, which can be downloaded here.
Remove the original megaglest binary in ~/megaglest (or where ever you installed megaglest), then extract this one into the same folder. That should fix the problem. Also run ~/megaglest/start_megaglest from the terminal to see if any other errors pop up.

**quick update** I noticed after installing ubuntu MATE on my netbook that there were some dependencies missing. If you are failing to run megaglest (using the start_megaglest script) check that these dependencies are installed by running this command:
sudo apt-get install libopenal1 libftgl libircclient libvlc5

you might have other dependencies that you need to install you'll just have to work through installing them one by one/ post another bug report.

Use the method posted by filux below below to fix the problem.

If you hold down the return key in the megaglest-chat, the "press return to chat" text disappears eventually and the game has to be restarted to re-enable the chat function in the megaglest-lobby.

libgcrypt.so.11 is present in ~/megaglest/lib; it is a working link to libgcrypt.so.20, but it looks like that GCRYPT_1.2 is not present in this library.
It looks like it's the same issue as shown here https://forum.megaglest.org/index.php?topic=9571.0, but I don't think this is the fix since libgcrypt is already installed on ubuntu.

There is currently a bug in the megaglest-chat where you can repeat what you've typed multiple times. You can reproduce this bug by:

1. type a message in the megaglest irc chat, but DON'T press return
2. press alt+return, and your message will have been posted, everyone else will see the message, but you won't see it in your own chat. You need another irc-chat open in #megaglest-lobby to see the message
3. you can repeatedly press the key combination alt+return to send the message multiple times

I originally posted this bug here: https://forum.megaglest.org/index.php?topic=9147.0. This is especially a problem in linux since the key-combination alt+return is very important when trying to escape from the game without closing it.

MegaGlest / Re: play.mg - New look proposal

I concur with Alket, it's not easy to find something matching online. I searched for
Code: [Select]
html5 OR css cloud OR smoke OR nebula backgroundand
Code: [Select]
html5 OR css cloud effectand the only half-way matching results I could find are:

https://codepen.io/montanaflynn/pen/orxwK

http://www.clicktorelease.com/blog/how-to-make-clouds-with-css-3d
(as discussed at http://www.paulrohde.com/css-3d-clouds-retake/ )

And those were pretty CPU intensive for me. On the other hand, the download is pretty small.

I really like the look of those CSS's, but I'm not sure how much of a problem the large cpu usage will be. It requires 20-30% of my i5 3210m, and is very choppy on my phone (naturally).

The page only uses a high amount of cpu if it's being shown on the display.

Could you specify whether this is happening only during online game-play or offline as well?

This sort of bug sounds like it's due to a bad internet connection. If this is the case, then I'm afraid there's unlikely to be a fix (the only fixes would be to not be downloading/ uploading stuff if you are while playing eg. steam, or switching to an ISP who supplies a faster broadband connection) .

if it occurs offline as well, then it's probably something to do with your gfx. In this case there are fixes.

Hey vibe ,
Since you upgraded , maybe its this problem https://forum.megaglest.org/index.php?topic=9492.0

If not , try running game from terminal with ./start_megagelst , and after it crashes , post the results , maybe someone will understand and help.

Vibe has the game working (just not well), so I don't think this is the bug.

Recently in the Towerdefense mod me and FreshDumbledore are making, I added an "emergency repair" particle system to all towers (using the same xml definition as the airship in tech uses for a custom damage particle system), but every time I morph a tower into a portal with this this xml definition I get a segmentation fault with the following output:

Segmentation fault (core dumped)

This happens if the object is damaged or not, and therefore also if the particle is being used or not

FreshDumbledore made a suggestion as to why this fault exists, he suggested that the particle is linked to the original object, when the morph occurs the particle wants to be cancelled but the original object which the particle belongs to is gone so the game gets confused (or something like that, maybe he'll explain a little better).

There is also a workaround this bug (using an attackboost as seen here), but this is tacky.

hi Keith.

I just wanted to note that I used to have out-of-memory problems with the nvidia-331.XX drivers in particular in megaglest. I would suggest possibly doing any of the following:

  • downgrading to nvidia-304 (not risky, but this driver doesn't provide good performance afaik)
  • upgrade to the latest nvidia drivers found in the xorg-edgers repo (considered risky, but this is what I did and I'm having no problems whatsoever with the latest nvidia-343 beta driver)
  • try the nouveau drivers (This is very risky, I've had all sort of bugs with these drivers spanning from memory leaks to overheating)

Hope this helps! (although it looks like you fixed the problem anyway)

MegaGlest / Re: CE-GUI branch: feature/ce-gui
« on: 27 August 2014, 23:46:36 »
Actually, I was wondering with this new feature would it be possible to store new themes in the mod centre? It would be quite nice if the MG-user had an easy-to-add selection of themes to choose from that are created by the community :o )

I like the idea, but worried there wouldn't be much custom GUI development.

I know little about CEGUI, but my understanding so far is that anything GUI logic related is 'baked into' the builds you produce, and the set of looks to select from is limited by the amount of themes which come with your build. It may not be necessary to rebuild to allow for team switching, actually Softcoder had added an INI option (for testing purposes) to allow for theme selection, so at least by restarting the game theme switching may be possible.

However, for now, we really need to focus on getting any one of the CEGUI looks (and Softcoder actually came up with a really good one IMO) working throughout the game. Since this involves programmatic changes it rules out many of us - but by no means all of us - who contributed to MG so far.

Quote
Also will combo boxes be implemented for map, faction, tileset and techtree selections?

Everyone else can learn to use CEED, the CEGUI presentation editor (read: easy enough to use, kind of like a WYSIWYG editor) and improve the menus and screens which have already been converted to CEGUI. I assume this will also allow for replacing existing UI elements by alternatives which use different input styles. As long as there are no logical changes and CEGUI supports it out of the box, it should be straight-forward.

The CEGUI branch of the megaglest-source repository provides a 'newly' added script which will build the CEGUI framework and the CEED editor on Linux (only, I don't know how to do it on Windows).
Code: [Select]
cd source/external-deps/cegui-source
./build-ce-gui-for-mg.sh
After building it, you also need to build MG itself, which will reuse parts of this earlier build.

The current code produces drop-down boxes on the custom game menu. Trying to change them to combo boxes seems like a good first objective in getting to know CEED. Give it a try!

Well, it's nice to know that there may be possible way of adding custom themes, but yes I totally agree that there should be a focus on making one particular theme a replacement for the current setup.

Even if there wouldn't be much custom gui development around, I still think it'd be nice having the option available. But I must also admit, I only briefly looked at this topic and thought oh-pretty-graphical-program-for-easily-making-new-GUI's, I've never actually looked/ read/ thought deeply into how these kind of guis are developed  :P

I agree with Ishmaru that the column is just lacking.

I couldn't help noticing that the temple in the MG engine and the snapshot of of the temple look different. The temple in the MG engine has 1 texture which looks boring (a bit like the roman temple xD).

The temple and well could be used with a little bit of work. The other textures on the temple need re-applying and I would shrink the temple, and add something interesting in the centre of the temple.

I'm not sure how I'd edit the well, but I'd try to make it look vaguely like some sort of creepy portal well :D

I love the units you chose! They look fun :-)

Hope to see this mod out soon!

Closed feature requests / Re: health bars (old topic relaunch!)
« on: 18 July 2014, 17:47:41 »
Currently in MG you can tell (but only when the unit is selected) what the health of a unit is by the colour of its ring (this can be helpful if you've multi-selected). If you were to add a health bar, I'd also ask for this ring-colour feature to be removed; It's hard to tell if you've selected the unit when the unit's health is low because the ring becomes very dark.

I've successfully managed to run MG on a laptop with worse specs than this netbook. Yours has a 64-bit cpu so that's better for a start than the laptop I was using. That is, nevertheless a weak netbook though so only expect to play non-multiplayer games on small maps with very little resources so that less units are produced.

As filux said, your netbook has more RAM than your cpu can address, so firstly I would look at reducing that to =<4GB RAM (Click here for further details about your cpu). This could also fix various other bugs you may have encountered while you've used your netbook.

Next, I'd recommend install a system such as ubuntu 14.04, as that will come with decent drivers pre-installed + configured (the laptop I was using was running fedora 18 at the time, which worked). Windows intel/nvidia/amd driver-stuff is full of non-fixable bugs. If you don't want to install a linux distro onto your machine I would still recommend trying MG on windows with =< 4GB RAM

When you load up Megaglest set everything to the lowest setting in video settings (even the resolution if you find this is required to make the game playable!). Try to start the tutorial again.

I have known the odd few games where people have connected after their game has taken approximately 170 seconds to initialise. But, usually if they required more than 90 secs to connect, they usually can't stay connected for a whole game.

Feature requests / change how observer mode works
« on: 29 March 2014, 12:24:56 »
Currently, observer mode requires a player to take a player slot, and then select "observer" as their faction. This means that, on a 1 v 1 map you can't have any observers, so no one can watch the 1 v 1 game.

So my suggestion is to allow observers to connect to a full game. Also,  the current limit to the number of players that can join a server is 8. But, there could be an option to allow a total of say, 12 clients to join where a maximum of 8 of those clients can be players.

I like it!  Most of the models looks very detailed. The structures especially look very impressive.

Personally, I think the tank, buggies and jeep all look as detailed as each other, and they all look good to me. If I were to criticise any of the models it would both the flying unit models. The helicopter looks too obese, and since I presume it's meant to look wide I think that could look a little better by adding extra items (e.g. air ducts, more guns etc.).
I my opinion, the hover thing looks too much like a dodgy R/C toy. I think that may be improved by adding extra stuff also.

The headquarters looks fantastic. I look forward to seeing this all collect to become a faction.

You'll need a deadline for enrolling :-)

MegaGlest / Re: New team play features coming soon
« on: 9 March 2014, 00:52:46 »
If you modify lastCustomGameSettings.mgg, you can set FactionControlForIndex#=7.  Then you can reload the last settings, and that faction will be under "Human" control--the AI will be disabled.  If you have multiple factions set to human control, then only the last faction is actually under your control ...  but if team unit sharing is on, you can control all factions on the same team.

Thanks for the hint ctz, works well. You can also do this though by creating scenarios where the human controls 2 players (that method doesn't actually require the shared resources and units option). Both of these options though are fairly inconvenient (yours less so).

Closed bug reports / Re: MG-3.9.1 ubuntux64: Freeze, then crash
« on: 25 February 2014, 00:28:00 »
The same error has occurred another 2 times today (while my server was open, and in the middle of a cpu game). Both occurred after ubuntu randomly froze, so I'm now pretty certain that this error is not a megaglest-related problem.

Here are some ideas I have to improve the current in-game debug:
  • When you look at the different active players in the debug, you can see players such as "cpu mega", but it'd also be nice to see what multiplier they have.
  • Add an option to Save the current debug to a text file and/ or an option to create a log
  • Add a translucent black background to make it easier to read, similar to what has been done to certain menu-stuff and when you look at past conversations
  • Add an "ok" button at the bottom of the debug so that newbies can easily escape if they accidentally enter it
