Feature requests / Re: save game setups
« on: 18 January 2016, 15:50:06 »
How about we save last played settings on a per map basis, and load those settings automatically when map is selected?
This way we don't need to add more buttons to the menu. Also this will help so much with all the maps both varying team set ups (2v2, 3v3, 5v3, 2v2v2, etc)

Have you check out www.opengameart.org?  I remember seeing all sorts of trees and foliage packs that were CC0.

53
Legal or not, from my experience with Annex I highly recommend NOT using assets of varying licenses. It can quickly become a headache when it comes to promoting, distributing, and porting your mod. Several times I had to re-licence/replace assets to distribute Annex for different platforms.

54
Sounds advanced but makes sense. Will test as soon as I have free time.

Off topic / Annex side game, Annex: Shadow OPS
« on: 4 September 2015, 19:08:12 »
I recently came across RTS Creator, an engine designed for those who are not coders, and found it to be pretty interesting. Its still very early in development so some features are not yet implemented, but its pretty easy to work with. To practice with it I'm working on an Annex directive game, ANNEX: Shadow OPS.

The game is a alternative reality to Annex: Conquer the World, and currently has two factions: the ALLIANCE MILITIA and the SHADOW LEGION. Many classic units from Annex CTW make return appearances, but have updated appearances, and some have been altered entirely, with some unique units to Shadow OPS.

I originally created this stage for the main menu, and endless battle between units. Its a blast to watch!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=voDIxUsJSKM

Units in video:

Alliance Militia
*Grenadier - Alliance Basic Infantry unit. Good HP for an infantry. Armed with a grenade launcher for light damage but a large blast radius.
*Ranger - Cheap scouting vehicle, armed with gattling gun for ground and anti air capabilities.
*Spartan - Assault vehicle. Moderate HP, armed with light cannon and long range rockets.
*Panther MBT - Heavily armored assault vehicle.
*Apollo Gunship - Armored Flying Fortress. Armed with 4 Gatling gun turrets, a severe threat to any opposing army.
*EML Sniper - Infantry armed with a long range energy weapon. Long recharge time. Low unit HP.
*EML Walker - Mech unit armed with a larger version of same energy weapon as Sniper. Fires a burst of three before recharging.
*Grizzly IFV. Moderate armor recon vehicle, armed with grenade launcher.
*Harrier - Jet fighter, attacks both ground units and air units with powerful missiles. High speed but low armor makes these perfect for hit and run attacks.

Shadow Legion
*Recruit - Basic infantry armed with assault rifle. Rifle shoots in bursts.
*Raider - Light ambush unit. Fires two moderately powerful rockets. However low HP means they cannot stay in a fight for long.
*Swatter - Moderately armored Anti-Air unit. Armed with twin Gatling guns for maximum penetration.
*Scorpion Tank - Long ranged tank, armed with a very powerful gun. Scorpions have a large blast radius so keep you forces back to avoid friendly fire.
*Hornet Gunship - Basic Air unit, armed with a Gatling gun, and air to ground rockets. While powerful and versatile, they are still vulnerable to anti-aircraft fire.
*Rocket Trooper - Infantry with missile launcher. Moderate HP, can attack both ground and air units.
*Cobra MRLS - Tank armed with 12 missile tubes. Powerful attack can pummel even the heaviest armor to dust.
*Python Tank - Fast economical armor solution. Works well in numbers.
*Jackal Bomb - Suicide unit, detonates its explosive payload by crashing into enemy units or structures.

How many barracks would you need? I wouldn't imagine you need more than 2, 3 at the most.

Currently working on creating a Playable Devourer faction! Check it out early footage:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vxHkXW-x_LM

So technically there are two factions, one optimized for AI use and one designed for a Player.

As explained Devourers are Parasitic organisms that spread from world to world eating everything in sight. In order to make them playable, I really wanted this to be shown in its gameplay.

As you see, Food is the only resource. However this faction has no farms or cows to produce. In order to obtain food you will have to actively hunt for food. You can hunt native creatures or Valkyries themselves. Only Valkyrie infantry count. Vehicles, Drones, and Structures explode on death.

The concept of giving devourers resources when they eat your units is actually not new. This was already in place in the AI version, however it was not food just a standard resource. So yes when you are playing as the Valkyries, the more units you loose the more resources the Devourers get.

You can Harvest Trees with worker type devourers. This gives you the resource "Organic" Using Lua, Organic resource is automatically converted into Food at the rate of 10 Organic -> 1 Food. Trees are a weak source of food. Since organic is not used for unit production, MG does not display it :)

Thinking of adding the ability to cannibalize your own Devourers for an emergency food source.

Also another new tweak for player version is that Devourers build structures from Morphing, not building. And yes they too require food.

A unit hierarchy is still needed. Currently all devourer types are available from beginning.

Turrets are intended to be strong, There are anti turret devourers coming soon!

While long ranged tanks aren't meant for scouting, which is why their attack range is greater than their vision.

Ok, don't worry I build the Linux versions on an Ubuntu VM, so there shouldn't be an issue with line endings.

Linux package made some trouble, because  the start script start_megaglest tried to start megaglest, but the binary was renamed to terra_centauri so it did not find it.
To fix it rename the file terra_centauri to megaglest. Then start the game with ./start_megaglest.

Any way to modify script so i can change the binary name?

Ok i played a game now... was easy for an experienced mg player  :P (played islands)

Just one more question: Of course i "hacked" that i could play devourers once :D and i saw that you can't build the cannon. Is it intended that you use the xml file without be_built skill so cpus does not built them? because there is a "correct" one in the folder :)

Its been a  while since i made that unit. I think it was to planned to have it be a morph unit not built but for whatever reason i just had it as a spawn in object.

Playing as the devourers is my #1 request, I decided to develop them as a playable faction, however the playable version they will be built as a separate faction from the ai version (due to the fact that AI wont have any idea how to play). I wont talk details yet but it will have unique mechanics involved ;)

62
Sorry for late response.

Fire particles are not directly editable in GAE. The size and height are directly related to the units size and heights specified in unit xml.

If you interested molding in Megaglest you can specify your own fire particles and can fully customise everything from size to color speed direction and image etc

List of Announced Units 5/18/15:

Environmental

Aside from the main factions, there are other lifeforms, and intractable objects scattered across the world of Terra. Some of these are very valuable for the player. As a general rule these are randomly scattered throughout the stage on each play through (there are some exceptions) so the levels is never the same twice. So go explore!

Primal

Usually lives in mountainous or desert regions. Primals have a primitive society that relies on stone tools. They are quite strong and very territorial. They will attack any Devourer and Valkyre that they spot. They have been known to occasionally capture lone Valkyries and imprison them back at their camps for food.

Alpha Primal

Older, wiser, stronger and leader of the primal tribes.

Captured Valkyries

Valkyre workers captured by Primals. Attack these to break them out of their prisons. (get a free worker unit) Subject to being a free meal for the Devourers.  Expect there to be some Primals guarding them, but you may be lucky and arrive while they are out to hunt.

Chests

You will find these scattered across all maps. Attack them to break them open. Chests may contain crystals or ore, or free experience points to the attacking unit.

Jelly

Lives in or near large bodies of water. can be found as an individual or in large schools. Harmless to Valkyries, will attempt to flee if anything comes close.

Phansis

Harmless grass feeder. Usually found in small heards in grasslands or forest biomes. Will attempt to flee if anything comes close.

Life Stone

You will find these scattered across all maps. Emits an energy that greatly restores HP of any unit that is close. Its a good idea to take note of their locations as they are vital points to stage an attack from or retreat to. Can also be destroyed for extra crystal resources.

Energy Vortex

You will find these scattered across all maps. Emits crystal energy that greatly restores EP and greatly increases unit production (for production facilities). Can also be destroyed for extra crystal resources.

Cannon

On certain stages Cannon Devourers may be randomly placed on loading.
"Turret" devourer. Launches "Bomber" devourers at long distance. Bombers explode on impact causing massive damage, especially to vehicles. Can attack air units.

DROP POD

Break open (by attacking) to get free unit upgrades, or a special Valkyre Structure.

Thank you!
Yes currently only the Valkyries are playable, but there are plenty of units to play with.
The current devourer models are more like place holders, rather than final versions. I want to update them once the game play is pretty solid.

List of Announced Units 4/13/15:

Devourers

Devourers are the main antagonists of Terra. They are parasitic organisms spreading throught the universe. They usually spread from world to world my Meteors. Once they infect a plannet they consume all organic matter and mineral matter till the world disintergrates and rides the debris to the next world. It is unknown where the devourers originated from.

Home

Primary Devourer. Stationary, and spawns worker Devourers. "Homes" originally arrived on Terra from the great Meteor fall. Stores a good amount of food, "Organic" resource.

Nest

Spawns most devourer types, Increases population cap, and stores a small amount of food.

Cannon

"Turret" devourer. Launches "Bomber" devourers at long distance. Bombers explode on impact causing massive damage, especially to vehicles. Can attack air units.

Devourer

"Worker" devourer, can spawn Homes and Nests. These are Omnivorous meaning they consume both all living things including plants. "Organic" matter is the primary resource of the Devourer. Each Devourer can store a limited supply of food in its gut.

Hunter

Basic offensive devourer. Attacks by eating its prey. Any eaten creature gives food (organic) resource to devourers. High HP and HP regeneration. Can mutate into a larger "Alpha" variety.

Spitter

Small offensive devourer. Spits acid at long range to dissolve its target. Weak defensive rating is compensated with its ability to attack Air Units, and its numbers. Can mutate into a larger "Alpha" variety.

Flyer

Arial devourer. Attacks by eating its prey. Any eaten creature gives food (organic) resource to devourers. Can only attack aerial units.

Digger

Special devourer. Travels underground to evade damage. Must surface to consume prey. Any eaten creature gives food (organic) resource to devourers. Vulnerable to attack when surfacing.

Bomber

Suicide devourer. Self destructs, igniting area around itself on fire. Fire damages any unit in effected area over time.

Splinter

Long range attacker. Bombards target with a barrage of acidic spines. Can attack air units. Can mutate into a larger "Alpha" variety.

Shocker

Special devourer. Emits a powerful EMP blast. Aside from damaging nearby targets, it also drains their EP. Possibly paralyzing Valkyries, if their EP drops zero. Can mutate into a larger "Alpha" variety.

Armor

Armored devourer. Attacks by tackling target. While relatively low attack, they are highly resistant to light and melee attacks. Can mutate into a larger "Alpha" variety.

Titan

Massive devourer. Heavily armored with a powerful jaw that can crush even the heaviest armor. Any eaten creature gives food (organic) resource to devourers. High HP and HP regeneration.

Mother

Special devourer that carries a nest of smaller "Pest" devourers. When in range releases dozens of Pests to attack target.

Pest
Weak devourers. works in groups to assault target. Only effective against infantry. Fast speed easily evades heavy weapons.

Thanks Carl, Really good idea. Especially for units that can upgrade weapons.

Added an early version (conversion from tech) in first post.

Gave it a test play today. You have some interesting unit ideas, and some good particles.

-I think your airship design is weak compared to the other units.  The balloon is to small to support its weight, and I think cannons would look better housed inside the hull or a turret rather than a free standing gun. Also overall there should be more details, windows, randomly placed armor plates, propellers, flags, rope etc.

-Tanks look good by themselves, but are far to tiny compared to infantry, dino's, or even the bike unit. I know its hard to scale units properly and have them function in the game but the design is very sleek, perhaps bulking tank up more may look better. Also other units have some nice decals maybe the tank could have painted decorations as well.

-PS Tank cannot shoot air units, but really appears to me that it should, having a minigun.

-Structures are your weakest designs. Very low poly and all share similar textures. Being so large on screen generally means you want to show more decals, to nost waste space. Add some gears, pipes, mechanical devices, and other appendages to really make the building look fantastic.

Still a nice start, Wish you the best of luck!

Mods / Terra Centauri: Infantry + Vehicle Units
« on: 30 March 2015, 14:18:33 »

List of announced units 3/30/15:

INFANTRY

WORKER

Builds Structures, Harvest Resources, Repairs Vehicles/Structures, Heals Infantry. Light attack capability.

LANCER

Basic Maylee unit. Short range, average armor but fast attack rate. Good in numbers.

RIFLE

Basic Ranged unit. Slower attack speed than Lancers, but longer ranged and can attack Air units. Can also deploy mines.

GUARD

Armored Maylee unit. Weaker attack than a lancer but can deploy an energy shield to protect itself and near by units. Shield activates automatically when engaging enemies. While weaker shield effect than the Shield Generator, no no EP is consumed. Shield effect stacks when Guards are placed next to each other.

JETPACK

Light Air Scout. Attacks both ground and air foes with a light minigun.

BEAM

Heavy sniper unit. Attacks from far distance with a concentrated beam projectile. While powerful, the weapon requires energy to fire, and has a slow fire rate. Vulerable to close range attack.

ROCKET

Heavy Siege Unit. Fires a barrage of close range incenerary rockets, causing massive dammage, with a large splash raidus. Requires a large amount energy to fire. Warning while powerful, they can easily kill their own allies if used carelessly.

VEHICLES/DRONES

EXO MECH

Armored, and armed with twin miniguns. Can dish out lots of dammage very quickly. Not effective VS armored foes. Its slow walking speed can be offset with they ability to be airlifted to any part of the map.

Tank

Heavily armored, altillery unit. High damage output, long range, and large blast radius, but with a very low rate of fire. Requires a lot of Energy.Warning while powerful, they can easily kill their own allies if used carelessly.

Glider

Armored Flight Unit. fast speed, and high attack vs air and ground units. Requires a lot of energy. Great for hit and run attacks.

Stun Drone

Recon unit. Emits an energy pulse which stuns devourers temporarily.

Recharge Drone

Self destructs on command releasing a regenerative beam that heals HP and restores EP to nearby units.

Still more coming in the next few days!
