Glad to see you popped in Andy. I rarely visit mod database. Possibly the first time in five or six years. I even stopped checking some of the old open source game websites. So much of the new stuff is for mobiles, something I'm just not interested in.

Thanks Tom. I'll go ahead and get the MG map editor via the link you provided.

As far as the copyright infringement? The whole thing is kinda funny and silly. I think it possible that the film production company uploads dailies to a server host like mediafire - and - a snooping algorithym identified one of my file numbers as being similar to one of their 'dailies' file number uploads. Just a guess. Considering that my file predates their film production by eight years or more.

Mediafire have been hosting my map files for ten years at no cost to me, so I've not a lot to complain about.

Hi. I'm looking for a download link for latest version megaglest map editor? Not the one inside the Megaglest client download. I just want  the map editor. Is there a link for that somewhere here on the site and I'm simply not seeing it? I understand the editor is in the client file.

Is the online editor okay to use in its present state? Are people still downloading and playing vanilla Glest?

I'm wondering which map file types to host. I can duplicate maps and file types for both Glest and MG. That's easy. I just need to reformat all my mediafire maps because some are in a .rar form. Fom the days when, you know, people complained about the cost of downloading 5k files. I may as well do all of this at once. That's why I'm asking.

PS: I've received an invite from Andy to join a modder group. Hello Andy. That's nice. I mashed a few tilesets together, but that was just copying XML stuff and cutting textures. I can't actually code or write XML/LUA stuff or mod. Hah. But I still joined the team!

Off topic / Public Domain Sharing
« on: 16 February 2018, 02:12:11 »
So. Glest and MegaGlest. Both open souce versions have been available   for quite a long time now. Which means there's been a good deal of original artwork, modeling and coding work done here by volunteers. I'm curious to know how people directly involved with MG content creation and modification feel about open source sharing on the MG platform. This is a question specific to Glest and MG only - not a broad question about global intellectual property copyrights etc. etc..

I've a series of questions to ask, but now realize that I need be careful of my phasing. I'll post this as is, but will return tomorrow to post the questions

6
Hi, it's been a while since I last commented here at MegaGlest - long enough to be forced to create a new password! The Mega team has done a great job keeping the game fresh. Volunteer work usually goes unheralded, so congratulations on keeping at it for so long :)

Downloads of my old Glest maps still happen with some regularity, which is kinda neat. A few of the older maps I made are close to 1k downloads. I still make maps, but those maps are of trails through a forest not far from my house, and as such, not  very good for gaming.

Cheers!

forest divide: is VERY good . I am very sure we should use it!

I made forest_divide, it is a derivative of this map by felipeludo2011.

All of my work for Glest is CC0 public domain.

MegaGlest / Re: About Large Maps, 256x256,512x512...
« on: 28 April 2012, 19:45:43 »
People are confusing different topics and then drawing conclusions based on those flawed perceptions. Properly designed 512x512 maps work fine, in fact a quality 512x512 map will easily outperform smaller, poorly designed 256x256 maps. Simply stated, cpu performance in this case is tied directly to poor AI pathfinder algorithms and poor map design, not map size.

If even one unit gets stuck at a specific location on a map - including 128x or 64x maps - then its only a matter of time before 10 more units get stuck at that same spot - and then 20 and then 40. Full stop. The AI pathfinder is now calling in loops, infinite looping is a bad thing for a computer CPU. For all intents and purposes, the game (cpu handling) just became a smoking pile of shrapnel.

I've played games on large maps - versus 3 AI opponents - where each faction had produced in excess of 520+ units and the CPU was fine - the amount of RAM on my computer WAS a problem but thats my problem and not related to this topic.

OP - go ahead and make the map, I'd be more than happy to beta test it previous to the public release.

Still a copy of the Glest Wiki. I don't mean to be blunt, but I'm not sure why you made another wiki when one already exists...

The current glest wiki page is an outdated copy of my work from this thread. Whats your point? That I'm stealing my own work or that I need your approval before working on a Glest fan site?

Glestmaps ranks #2 #1 on North America non-region google proxy search pages which translates to increased map and tileset downloads during the same period - woohoo! Tracking shows hits from all over the globe but huge net increases from Eastern Europe, Russia and Southeast Asia.

This is the only way the job can be finished properly. Looking forward to a unified Glest game client and community.

When the AI finds your base it will rush units to that location - one way to delay this is by posting low cost guard units at a fair distance from your home base. Also, some maps are harder to win on than others.

MG shouldn't have its own site. GAE tried that once... It was never that popular, and eventually went down because the costs weren't payed.

I think titi wll be using a free open source web host.

Quote
I think that the main page should indeed have at least a link on the download page to MG and GAE, and the Glest Team should definitely be contacted about that.

Agreed.

Quote
MG should *NOT* have its own wiki... That's not the point, especially when you think of how similar it is to Glest

Why not port over Glest Guide, or at least remove the copyright? What's good for the goose is not good for the gander?

Quote
and having multiple wiki's complicates the issue, just like that Glest Maps wiki (which I probably should try and port over to the main wiki in the future)

You know what would be nice? A little appreciation for my hard work. Oh sure, the intellectual content is worth porting but apparently thanking me is a step too far. This sort of thing pisses me off to no end. I will redouble efforts to increase page rank and drive traffic to glestmaps.

Quote
(By the way, wikia itself does a lot of the hard work for getting it's sites ranked well on google, since it depends on the sites being popular to pay off the costs of hosting said sites (not logged in users see ads on wikia sites)).

Google search ratios favor wikia a by a large margin, claiming otherwise is just plain incorrect ( I did pull the 10-1 figure from thin air though - heh).

All this discussion matters not, MG will have its own front page. I just hope it gets the traffic it deserves.

I tried to contact marthino but I got no reply /SNIP/ if you look at sourceforge glest gets about 1000 downloads a day.

The old real-estate cliche "location location location" also applies to the web, top of the page search engine links are the equivalent of prime real estate locations within London, Berlin, Moscow and New York. There are thousands of Glest links pointing to Sourceforge/CNET and other high profile download aggregators - many of those same links point to the Glest.org front page. Creating a MG front page won't solve the linkage problems.

What group of people own prime glest real estate locations? Martino/Tucho and Jose. The key to the future rests at the feet of the Glest Team. Better to hang together than hang separately.

--------------

NOTE: google weighs wiki links at a disproportionate rate to all non-wiki web traffics - something like 10-1 on the weighting scale. its crazy but this is how google operates. The best way to route new MG traffic is by creating a MegaGlest gaming wiki. Want proof that this works? First, don't use direct google searches unless you know how to bypass the regional filters.

I'm 100% in favor of the freedom and flexibility of FOSS gaming. Do as you see fit - but - gaming the search engines will produce better results. In less than a year I drove Glestmaps.wiki to first page #7 on english text non-regional goggle search profile. Not bad for a newbie.
