If its as simple as using radio selection buttons and some testing - then I'll be using this tool for designing story driven multi-map mini campaigns.

Redistributed and reduced the overall quantity of start location resource nodes
1) resource nodes are placed closer to the storage buildings thus reducing the overall worker harvesting cycle times -  allowing players to quickly ramp up technology and defend against early AI rushes.

2) reduce overall resource node allotments in the start locations thus forcing the AI to expand earlier, this prevents the AI from forming early game super-cities and armies.

Tools / Re: [Tilesets] [Gimp-Plugin] Low Frequency
« on: 8 September 2010, 17:00:19 »
mictes, are you making a new tileset? The Imladris tileset needs some surfaces texture work (tile randomizing/smoothing) and the tree models are too tall and need to be reduced in height and overall size by 20 percent. I can modify the surfaces textures but need someone to work on the model sizing.

Imladris has the most unique models and style of any tileset - tis a worthy cause!

Anyone with modeling experience game to help?

General discussion / Re: Glest Advanced Tactics Guide
« on: 21 August 2010, 11:25:11 »
Hi Orion, will you be using the Glest wikia for this guide? Omega just added infobox templates and they may be quite helpful when organizing the faction statistics.

108
Zoythrus , I think you can do this yourself and here's how.

Use a couple different jungle trees from the jungle tileset, add one tree from Swamp and a couple palm tree from Mediterranean. the golden colored papyrus from desert tileset makes for a nice bush and good dead trees can be found by mixing one each from evergreen, volcanic and Mediterranean. Scrub land tileset has good dried mud polygons and burnt ground textures and meadow tileset has a nice brown grass texture.

Use the small stone and large mossy rock from Mediterranean and change the color values on both of them until they are dark black, volcanic also has interesting rock models and those may work as well. One idea would be to replace the textures with a red chirt stone look. http://www.backroombeads.com/stone.html

Post the modified rock and stone textures on the forum and maybe someone can help clean them up. Obsidian will be kinda of tricky as its a shiny rock with glass-like surfaces - so you may be a bit disappointed with the end result.

MegaGlest / Re: performance test
« on: 19 August 2010, 04:13:53 »
My computer ran the scenario with no problems

titi, modify the scenario, allow the first set of triggers to complete THEN add a gridlock script where  5-10 additional units become stuck while attempting to complete an scenario objective THEN run the original scenario script again while the gridlocked units continue to fail at pathing to the scenario objective.

This is whats been happening in some AI/multiplayer games - AI units get stuck and no one notices it until there are so many units on the map that it causes the weakest computer to grind to a halt and drop out of the game?

The wikia change from monobook to monoco has caused a lot of problems - good to see you've passed a few hurdles. The main page code kludge was my attempt at wikia coding - fail!

Looking good Omega!

Spring, Mediterranean and volcanic/lava land are the new screenshot format. Do they look okay? Is the image too small even when viewing it at the photobucket page? Color values okay?

I have a cheap widescreen monitor and it's not built for quality graphic work so i'm curious to know if the images are acceptable to people with nice monitors.

Keep hammering away at it! Wikia, at first glance, seems to be easy to configure and customize but upon closer inspection - it really isn't very nooby friendly.

Information window category templates would be nice for factions, tilesets and maps. Widescreen support for the main portal page should be the primary default setting.

I don't think Omega set out to pit one branch against the other - merging defined here means unity at the cost of flexibility and would be the ultimate goal but its not the only path. Two distinctly different branches can work - we see this all the time in many different professions.

Would a glest mod manager be possible? Is it an achievable goal? Stupid idea?

As far as telling coders what they should be doing? I'd never do anything of the sort.

I will reiterate one major point though. Windoz end users such as myself prefer tidy installs and simple modder file packages. KISS.

General discussion / Re: Future Prospects: One Glest.
« on: 4 July 2010, 03:36:54 »
No one is asking for perfection here, stable is as stable does! Glest 3.2.2 is stable but has some annoying.. lets call them "unintended features".  We will never reach consensus because we apply different standards and definitions to words with broad meanings. Stable open source freeware should not be compared to commercially available software etc.

Has anyone here played STALKER: Shadows of Chernobyl? SoC literally has hundreds of mods, some of those mods are tiny 5 line bug fixes while others pretty much alter the game engine. The mod community had reached a point where many mods would not function with each other - sometimes WinMerge would get two incompatible mods working and sometimes it would break everything. One team of modders branched out and built a mod tool for installing/uninstalling/merging mods.

http://www.smart-mod-manager.org/details.html

Code: [Select]
For users

Smart Mod Manager manages your collection of mods, allows you to quickly switch between them, add and remove mods in any order. It is also capable of merging mods together.

SMM works with nearly all existing mods. The exception is mods that come with their own installers. If you want to install such a mod, it is best to ask its author to provide a "plain" version.

SMM can merge mods together. If two mods conflict with each other, SMM will ask you to choose the more important one. However, it is not always possible to merge mods correctly. Mods that are similar to each other are difficult to merge.

SMM makes mods simple, but does not hide anything from you. The Diagram View shows exactly what is going on behind the scenes. Higher priority mods are displayed above lower priority mods. Links are drawn between conflicting mods. You can click on a link to see what is wrong.
There can be description files for multiple languages. Add a two-letter language suffix to each translated file, for example: description-de.txt  to German and description-ru.txt to Russian.

We need a Glest Mod Manager for Glest/GAE/MegaGlest. Branch managers will provide a "Stable" cross platform installer/build for their prospective branch and the mod tool then works from each "stable" build to install or remove various modded game elements. The tool will add flexibility for modders but will simplify the process of patching and modding files for end users.

We cannot grow the community if the mods and patches and binaries and branches and tilesets and map .mgm and .gbm ...... OMG! I just went blind....

Keywords: Glest Open Source Stable = pretty darn good beta build.

Maps, tilesets and scenarios / Re: New map: Spiral Battle!
« on: 1 July 2010, 21:09:33 »
The only reason I've added licensing information to all of my original work is simple - titi has, on more than one occasion, felt the need to request permission to use my maps in his pack and each time I have to tell him he has permissions. I've never intended my maps to be anything more than public domain and bristle at the notion that anyone spend precious time begging permissions when they could be doing something more productive.

Its a free game and no one will be "stealing" a Glest texture or model and then use those works to make millions of dollars. Hollywood actors make less than 100th of a percentage per $US dollar on DVD sales and they belong to unions, have agents and sign contracts.
