i downloaded debian packages. I have the same problem :(
glest version: 1.0.10
ati radeon 8500le with at propriety drivers 8.23.7

will try to compile the sources

compiling sources 2.0.0 didn't help me... i cannot see characters
i tried to boot into windows and windows glest and it works.
imho problem is in ati proriety driver :/

Same problem here.  A few more details in case it's relevant to anyone:

ATI Radeon 9200 PRO
proprietary ATI drivers 8.23.7
linux 2.6.12
gentoo

With my Ati Radeon 7000 (Freedesktop-DRI-Drivers) I just saw a grey area ingame, until I deactivated shadows and 3D-textures in the options.
Then it works fine.

i upgraded to xorg 7.0.0, new ati propriety drivers and old libGl.so.1.2 (because newer ati driver has bug with r200 cards). now it works good. i played for one hour without any problems
