Glest sunk
« on: 28 May 2006, 23:36:21 »
I think glest sunk. I mean they never add anything anymore and there is almost no one posting in forums. And remember ka? His 2 great games stopped production and hasnt used his website in like years. same with glest. I gave up on glest a year ago. I think its sunk. Does anyone every see the admin post anymore? Just wondering. Id like to see them start this game up again and make it popular like it used to be.

Hey, man, I look at the forums every day and me and tucho post quite regularly. You can not expect updates every day, we just do this for fun.

The problem is maybe, that Glest as game itself is a more or less closed enviroment. They don't want to have some open source "hacks". So Patches and stuff like that went external folder... And some stuff(like the savegamefeature) disapears. Maybe we need an extra project focussed on the open source aspect besides the Glest game. It is for the free patches mods etc. then. There they go in the trunk (also like other translations which never get part of the offical release). Then there is the more or less closed original offical Glest as it still is and another open source glest (also with own releases). Hopefully they help each other. But what we need is a mantainer you is willing to manage this project a little bit(updating the trunk etc.). I unhappily have a lack of knowledge of this, but i would help as good as i can.
Hope you understand what I mean.

That aren't not critics on the glest-team. You do a excelent work. But for open source this doesn't seem perfect. So this is an additional idea.

well, i am looking on this forum very rare (and it will be the same at whole summer, i cant get in close of a computer) but as i see, there are not many posters here. i dont mind the save game feature, because i dont play so long on GLEST to i have to use the save game. that would be nice, if there would be something like campagin, but for now...

This project was halted because today the Glest team members are separated in different countrys and citys, and Duelfield was a too much ambitious project for made from a distance. For this reason we decided continue with Glest, adding small fatures and units.

You can see what we made for Duelfield in this  topic

Here's the way I see it:

martinho & Co. have fun making Glest 2.0
martinho & Co. push themselves to release Glest 2.0
martinho & Co. release Glest 2.0
martinho & Co. feel good about releasing Glest 2.0
martinho & Co. don't work on Glest 3.0 right away, they are already burned up from the 2.0 release
martinho & Co. take Glest 3.0 calmly for some time(which could be weeks, months, years, decades, centuries, milleniums)
martinho & Co. tell themselves, "you know, it's been some time since I did some work on Glest for fun".
martinho tragically dies... wait... no this isn't what is supposed to happen XD, instead
martinho & Co. work on Glest 3.0

Too much of something wears people out. It's not like the Glest team should work on Glest out of pressure, but because they want to.

when we began to work on Glest and Duelfield, we were living in the same city, But today Martinho is in UK, enveloop is in Santiago (Spain) and I am in Mallorca (Spain), there are more than 1000 km between each of us; for this reason we decided make less ambitious projets, like continue with Glest adding it some small features or units

Things like the shared vision of allies or improvements in the IA what Martin-o implemented in the latest versions, as far as I am concerned things like the Glest modder survival kit

Made games need a very fluent comunication between the developers, especially between programming and graphics, and from a distance this comunication is very hard, besides today we haven't so many time than we began with Glest

Tucho is right in what he says. It´s not only that we are living in different cities but also that martin-o and him got jobs that take most of their time. What we are doing now is being realistic, adding those things that our current situation allow us to, and above all, keeping the spirits high :)
