I have been very interested in Glest for a long time. And finally, I have enough time to look at the the code! I was thinking of getting a small network prototype up so that multiplayer games can be made possible. This is a very easy way of getting many many more interested developers to contribute to Glest... especially open source developers!

Is anyone else willing to attempt to put this together by the end of summer? I imagine a simple dedicated server and a very simple packet parser is all that we really need. However, I worry that synchronization of multiplayer gameplay might be an issue... not to mention map-hacking and cheating.

Although I have some experience with network programming (don't we all!) I am very very new to game networking so anyone else willing to backbone this endeavor?

Sweet... as long as there is support from home camp!

Anyway, I'm getting in touch with this one programmer who is very experienced in game multiplayer networking. There is this really neat lecture on conceptual game networking (from my own university!) if anyone is interested in reading:
