Evening the odds the easy way...
« on: 2 November 2006, 20:12:29 »
When I first started playing this game I found it almost impossible to beat. So, here is an explanation on how to even the odds a bit by editing the xml files.
First, right click your start button on windows xp and goto "explore". Now navigate to c:/program files/Glest_2.0.0/techs/magitech/.
Now you will see two folders, magic and tech.
For the sake of this howto we will enter the folder 'magic'.
Once under the magic folder you will see three more folders and an xml file.
Enter the folder named 'units'.
Now you will see a series of folders named after characters and buildings.
For the sake of this howto we will enter 'initiate'.
BTW 'initates' are the builders, or 'mages'
Now in this folder you will see 3 more folders and 2 xml files.
Open the one called 'initiate.xml' by double clicking it. Note it should open in internet explorer by default.
Once in internet explorer you should recieve a security warning (ignore it).
Now right click anywhere on the screen and goto "view source".
This will open in notepad.
Now in this code you will see "resource name="gold" amount="75"/" commented out.
Now you can change the number "75" to anything.
Example: "resource name="gold" amount="10"/"
Now simply close notepad and click "yes" when it asks you to save.
Lastly start your game. Your workers should now cost 10 gold or whatever number you chose.
One final note is that your version "glest_2.0.0" may be different than mine like "glest_1.1.1". Have fun and dont cheat too much.

Well, you could use the XML files for cheating... but really the point is so you could mod the game and make up your own game in a sense. A few mods "almosted" got completed which made huge changes to the game units and succh, but I don't think there are really any completed total mods avaliable for download, even though there are many little add-ons you can download which gives a few new units and such. I have a mod that I was working on which is about 90% done, which changes many aspects of the game, but I just got lazy and didn't finish it :P Its still rustying away on my computer, probably could set it for release in a day, but I don't really have a day free heh.

I've made an super-faction, wich have all units, low building prices and an excellent AI. I always win if i play with this faction, but always lose if it is my enemy... :D

Lol... This was more intended for noobs than anything. Not for developers obviously. Most newcomers to this game wont have the foggiest idea how to reverse engineer it to figure out where variables that effect things like speed, armor, and cost are stored. I figured this might help to prevent posts titled "this game sucks" or "the other team cheats" or things to this affect. I hope it eventually helps someone so im not just putting it out into the ether. Just trying to help the 'non programers' that make up about 99% of the gaming community.

Well, I guess it could be fun to destroy entire armies with two or three boosted initiates, but that's it. :O
