Seems like what you want is to change the texture on a few pre-built meshes. I think this might already be possible. (change the images in the tech directory)

I'm not sure how the animation would look with a different texture though.

Don't know what do you mean with animator? Do you ant to do new animations? That's nothing for Glest direktly. there blender is the most common way.

You only talk about different colours and such, so for those stuff Gimp is really the best. And for names look at the xml-files. It is more than easy. You will find 1001 of such"mods" here(desperatly no real mod :().

That would take a long time to actually make and it can be hard to create as well.
