glest on Ubuntu Edgy : grey screen
« on: 23 March 2007, 14:27:55 »
hello. I'm french so excuse me for my bad english.

I tryed Glest on Windows 2000 and I like the game. So I would like to play it on Ubuntu Edgy, my OS now.

I install it by the .deb packages and by the .run file. I have the same result : the game starts and I can configure language and graphics options but when I want to play, I have a grey screen with all functionnality good but no graphics. See this capture :

I have ATI Radeon 9800 Pro with 128 Mo of video RAM and an Intel P4 2,8 Go with 1 Go of RAM. The 3D acceleration is good (Beryl works fine).

Does any one have a solution to make this good game works on my machine ?

Theres seems to be a few people that have been having this problem, including my brother. I suspect that it could be linked to ATI cards. The solutions I have seen are to turn off shadows and 3D textures.

What about trying different versions of drivers?

Hello,

have you try out playing Glest without Compiz or Beryl?
Perhpaps Xgl, Compiz or Beryl and 3D Games
doesn't like play well together.

I play Glest with FreeBSD, but without Xgl, Compiz or Beryl.
But i have OpenSUSE installed to,
(but don't use it really)
with Beryl, 3D Games have Blank Screens
or only some Game Parts viewable, with Beryl active.

Perhaps you can switch of Beryl,
i see the Beryl Manager on your Screenshot.  ;)

Greeting, Fusselbär

When I try to play, I switch off Beryl. But I didn't try to change drivers. I will today. More news in few hours.

try switching to fglrx

Hello,

I use Ubuntu Edgy and ATI Radeon 9800Pro too. I also had the gray screen problem when I was using the "ati" driver (open source driver, provided by the xorg-driver-ati package, I think), but it was fixed when I switched to fglrx, the proprietary driver from ATI. There is a guide for installing it on http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu ... tion_Guide

I think this is possibly the same issue as: http://www.glest.org/glest_board/viewtopic.php?t=1809 (3d textures and open source r300 driver not playing nicely)
