glest? glevolution? and other questions...
« on: 12 July 2007, 18:02:21 »
Hi there,

somewhere on a wiki i read about glevolution as a "communtiy version of glest" - so it sound like glest is not communtiy driven? But at their page (http://glest.eurion.net/) it looks more like a place for collecting mods.

So, what license is glest under? gpl? The artwork too?

who is developing glest right now?

Is there some "roadmap" where the projects aims to?

thank you in advance,

Florian Ludwig

This one brings more questions to my mind... perhaps out of the scope here, but:
http://www.sharecg.com/ lots of nice models but nothing about licensing them. Since they are downloadable to every one are the public domain - and so the glest models are public domain too?

Quote
Details on the development on a graphical application to install easyExtension packages.
So glevolution is not a fork of glest - its realy just about making mods? (and a mod-manager)

hm, the multiplayer thread i'll read later in detail :)

thank you! Hope my still open questions will get answered soon.

[edit]
The source code is as written in the soruce files itself under gpl 2+

The development of the official Glest is pretty inactive, as stated by the authors (only small fixes they said, iirc).

Glest: Evolution is in fact a project (mainly a website) for Glest modding. Glevolution (that could be called a sub-project of it, although they are not really tied), is a fork that aims at continue working on Glest, letting the community get more involved in it. It's current objective is mainly to implement multiplayer gaming, but it also got many *small* fixes and improvements.

Glevolution is supposed to be a diffrent "Distribution" of Glest, including more stuff, like translations + mods, which one basically could just download and use with the "Normal" Glest, but whatever ... And both are licensed under GPL, at least the source codes

Concerning the Artwork it seems to be up to the individual contributor, some don't have any license on them, others have a reference to GPL, but do not contain the license itself ( ARGH!!!! ) ...

this license thing could be a real problem :D

>and use with the "Normal" Glest<
as of my understanding this is wrong since they have forked the complete source tree. SO if you want their improvements and fixes you will have to use their releases. I wouldn't call it a distribition, more a project based on glest. Both are cooexisting but nearly the same. Maybe some of the enhancments in glevolution will be merged back to glest, but i cant tell about this 0:-) I'm just new as you are.

True (altough it says distribution somewhere it's a fork, will review the site later and correct it).

Glevolution and Glest: Evolution aren't the same. The first one is, as said, the fork, and Glest: Evolution is the website where minor mods are hosted and the mods packaging project (easyExtension) takes places.

Being available for download is not at all public domain. On the contrary, anything which does not have a license specified is, by default, copyrighted and you (a third party) have no rights over it, not even to download it.

This is the law in most part of the world. Sorry to bring you the bad news, but this is too dangerous to play with.

eddyp, yes you're right with this. Normally i wouldn't even allowed to download them,.. but since they offer a download that expliced...

btw imo in some countries if you don't write "copyrighted by and year" its publiuc domain, dont ask me which ones :D Couldn't find any notice about usage terms...

it will be good that glest team cooperates with everyone who wants to help in developing. then we will have normal Glest inc. © ® TM, and extension pack with all available downloads. maybe someone don't want to have other downloads, just Glest inc. © ® TM.

I agree.

But therefor we need to convince the devs to do so. But even before this we need to find a way to contact them. Maybe soemday some one of them will look here in the forums (since they pay them i guess they will...)

But I tried to contact them, but...
http://www.glest.org/glest_board/viewtopic.php?t=2560

nothing so far.

I think waiting for the original Devs will only slow down development. Everything is already setup so that we can continue as far as I can tell. That's what the purpose of Glevolution was.
