The Gods
« on: 20 July 2007, 17:07:12 »
This post  is meant to flesh out the cosmology of the Glest setting.
In doing this, I start with the question of what exactly the Will is:

The answer is that is a process of creation that anyone can use if they know how. The knowledge on how to use it, however, has been purposfully hidden by the Gods, who were the first to use it, though they didn't know it at the time.
The Will can manifest itself in many forms:
Sorcery - The magic faction
Science/Tech
Nature- The druid faction
I could go on and on.
In essence, it gave birth to the first beings, who had to learn from trial and error to use it. As they grew in power, they became corrupted by it.
It took the efforts of one rogue god- Sort of a Prometheus figure - to seal it off to all but mortals, lest the corrupt gods  become invincible.  What do you think?

Deep rests Science in the Mind
as Magic deep in the Heart;
Those on which the Will is strong,
Those will reign on Their behalf.

In my opinion, part of the "charm" of Glest is that it has a solid foundation in terms of aesthetics and background, yet it is still open for everyone to imagine the details (as silent did to an incredible extent in his/her version).

Once upon a time (hehe) I asked Tucho to make a map of "The world of Glest", since it´s not stated anywhere that Glest takes place in Europe. Unfortunately he was really busy making models, textures and animations, so the map was never done. Sometimes I still wonder how that map would look like...

Anyways, talking on the Will, I´d say it´s not something like the Force, but more the courage to persist against adversity. -Yikes, I have just cut a thousand possible stories... :(

Ok, let´s say that what I wrote above is not "canon". However, there will never be midichlorians in Glest, period. XD

the World of Glest would be interesting, because the largest possible map is the 1024x1024...

will, its hard to say, i can define it hungarian (Will=Akaraterő)...

it means, that you feel like you have to do something, and you know, you must not do that. if you have strong will, you wont do it, but if it is weak, the desire will (<-represents for future) overtake you.

Haha... when  I talked of "a map" I meant a picture, a drawing, not a game map.

Yours is a nice description of what the will could be :)

and as i know, someone said, (i think it was you) that Glest is not the world, but the game's name.

EDIT: the will usually represents the magic in several games. you mentioned the Force, so lets see:

as you know, the Jedi masters always teach, that use the Force without emotions.

Imagine, that you have to kill somebody (you are a Jedi). you feel, that you must not do that, because he is also a living creature. if your will is not strong, you wont use the Force successfully, because you cant handle the Force with your Will.

Well, I say "the world of Glest", so yes, Glest is just the game´s name (I wonder if anyone remembers what Glest means) :P - @kukac@]

well, its not a good synonym...

motivation makes the man to do something. will is opposite of it.

and these are not will. the will is to overtake your feelings, your requirements...

its easier to understand if you ever tried a roleplaying game.

(sorry kukac, I think I changed my answer before I saw your reply)

I think we need an english Philologyst here XD

Anyways I think that motivation could be part of the meaning. You know that thing inside you that makes you work to reach a goal when nobody else believes it´s possible? I call that the Will, the inner motivation to get something done against everything.

Anyways a poem is a poem, so there´s nothing wrong if the meaning is never completely clear.

By the way, the spanish version of the poem says

La Ciencia en la Mente del Hombre
como la Magia es al Corazón;
quien halle en la Voluntad Razón,
sólo aquél reinará en su nombre.

So the word is Voluntad, which I translate as "The Will" :)

well, i think i will tell you as a roleplaying game (and not wow  >:( )

imagine, that a mage casts you a mental magic (mental, is your intellect/intelligence) and trying to force you to kill someone. if you have strong will, you can resist to it. if not, you will kill her/him. i dont know how it works, if they cast an astral magic on you (astral, your feelings, like anger, hate). im still thinking on it, if they cast a spell that makes you to hate for example, the british queen, your will, i think, cant do so much against it....

Well, that´s a whole new question on free will! XD If your will can be controlled, then it is not strong enough, and the poem there says that you won´t reign, sorry! XDD
