free compiler able to compile glest source?

does anyone know about a free compiler that i can use on windows ME to compile the glest source? i would appreciate some feedback because i'd enjoy changing a few objects in the source code

i think mingw may work, but i don't know how to setup a build system for this :) maybe jam works... dont know. Its a port of gcc to windows.

IIRC there is a free version of visual c++ ....
