usually, you need to overwrite the files. check the mod, and copy everything to the same place as in the Glest directory

In the tech directory there are the factions which go on to buildings, units etc. Make a copy of the directory first. If you make a copy of anything in the tech folder move it to a different location so it won't be loaded. Then copy and paste the new files in.
