What the game should have in the next version
« on: 12 June 2004, 23:35:51 »
I love the game. That's why I'm taking the time to give you feedback. Here's what I personally think should be in the next version:

  • A real GUI Background, or at least a black quad behind the info of the seletion on the right side of the screen so that you can see the text at high gamma in the tileset "snowy_forest" easily.
  • Arrow keys that scroll, not just the cursor in proximity to the screen edges.
  • Tooltips for units and upgrades. I know most of the stuff is self explainatory, but tooltips would be nice nontheless.
  • A gamma correction meter in the game configuration
  • And or course, multiplayer internet play. Perhaps not in the next version, though.

Oh and one question - how do I build buildings such as the "library" or "Archmage Tower?" I can't make them with my workers, it seems.

Thanx for your suggestions, we will add some of them in the next version, others such as multiplayer will have to wait more. Just tell you that you can change the display color by pressing 'c', to see it better in snowy tilesets.

Library and Archmage Tower can be built with Initiates, the basic unit from the mage tower. However tech tree will totally change in next version, we are  working on two different factions.

Oh ya one more thing I'd love glest to have: Hotkeys

If it already does, they should be noticable within the command used for them.

If that is already the case, then I'm a bit unobservant.

*****
Attack-Move addicts, like me, can get majorly annoyed by this game's control.

Here:
A + Click: Attack move to click location
S: Order selected units to stop

That's really all I'd like in the way of hotkeys really.
I just hate it when I order a group of units to move, and then a group of enemies pop out of nowhere, and so I quickly press 'S', so that they'll stop, realize that doesn't work, and then find the "stop" button after 14 of my units have been killed.

***********************

EDIT: The game should also have shared vision with your allies.

I also like attack-move commands, but I use to issue them with the menu, that's the reason I didn't implement hotkeys, but of course I know they are very useful, and I should implement them soon. The problem here is that many keys are already used for other purposes: 'asdw' rotates the camera 'p' pauses the game, etc ... , I will have to think on something to solve this problem...

By the way I have already implemented scroll with arrow keys, next version will have it enabled.

Cool, I can't tell you how many times I've tried using the arrow keys to move, and getting mildly annoyed when they don't work.

Perhaps, for some of the hotkeys, you could fo "Ctrl + (Key)?" I admit to not having any knowledge about Ctrl+(Key) registring in OpenGL but considering the fact that your team is undoubtly way better at OpenGL that me, and the only OpenGL game that I've finished is a 3D Asteroids game of merely 700 lines of C++, and your team has done... GLEST, I have no doubt that your team exceeds my GL skills and you know how to do a simple Ctrl+(Key) registration.

Oh - and one other thing - If you want me to make a UI background for glest, I can do that. Just tell me the file type and I'll get right on it.

Just a comment... martin-o does all the coding, so in that aspect the "team" is a "team of one"...  ;)

3dsmax is not in the pack. nope. no way. ;)

- More factions: v1.0 will feature two, and they will be different, not only aesthetically but also in the way you play them.

- Objects: we have planned to add some, like monoliths and other stuff.

- Creeps and Critters: if we have time enough we´d like to add some "independent" animals, maybe bears or wolves, but this is uncertain.

- Mini map: it will stay like that, I believe.

- Expand? they build their empire and attack you, if that´s what you mean.

- Better interface: we are already working on new, cute icons.

- A Help: There´s a file called "readme.txt" in the game folder...

- Unit hints: That´s a good idea, but we have to balance factions first.

- Heavy attack Vehicles:  we are working on the robot and the catapult.

- Air Units: the dragon so far.

- Walls: probably never.

Code: [Select]
they built a new castle but: (right near to the old one)

That´s true. they make new buildings in the surroundings of their starting point. They should settle where the gold is... another one to the "to do" list :P

And the walls... we talked many times about that. They are very difficult to implement well, and other things have priority. And martin-o always says that warcraft 3 doesn´t use them and it´s not a worse game for that. But we keep on insisting (tucho, zanni and I).

Hello

I must say: I LOVE this game too!

It is great!

But i think this things must have the next version:

- something that show me with which things i can interakt (i mean a pointer e.g. for the worker when i go with the mouse over a tree -> so it show me that i can take wood from there (like AOE)

- a better German translation
- a german comunity (e.g. a german borde and a german hompage (i understand english but i know people i show this game and they don't understand it (and the page) cause ot there "English known")

When you want and when you send me the e-mail adress of the maker from the german translation we can do this!

And:
Can you send me or tell me the name of the program with which you create the maps?  ;)

Hi, thanks for the comments,

something that show me with which things i can interakt

There´s this arrow when you send a unit to do something... if it is green then it means "moving", if it´s red "attacking" and yellow implies any other action, like cutting wood, repairing... it is quite straightforward, I believe.

There´s an english "international" page and a spanish "local" one, we can´t have more because these are the languages we know. Someone could translate the whole page to german, (someone actually did), but then everytime we changed something we´d have to ask for the new translation... keeping three different pages is not practical and we need to focus on the game itself. Plus, the forum would stay in english or spanish because we don´t know german enough (only martin-o knows some) as to reply to the people. And with german comes italian, or french... so I believe that the best option is what I said, to keep with a "local language" page and an "international language" one. I hope you´ll understand it.

We make them with the editor pack, which you can download from the... well, from the "downloads" page :P
